It depends on how you look at it. There are thousands of fediverse servers, and there are at least a million active users in total.

Based on the context of this discussion thread/branch, those Lemmy servers mentioned would not even fall near the “dominating the network”, they are very far from dominating the fediverse network.

But, if you are referring to “Reddit-like / Stackexchange-like / Quora-lack”, then sure, those servers mentioned are “dominating” the “answers UI/UX” space. However, the fediverse doesn't work like that, and you probably won't even notice it while using any fediverse software.

In the fediverse, and servers acts like a group. If you have used and groups (chirp.social and a.gup.pe respectively), then Lemmy and Kbin servers works similarly.

If I post to a Lemmy “community” or to a Kbin “magazine”, that post will be re-shared/boosted/re-posted to everyone who subscribed/followed that community/magazine. Anyone who replies to that post, it will be re-shared/boosted/re-posted also.

In other fediverse software, it will just appear as a regular status update thread. In Lemmy and Kbin, it will appear as a comment to a certain post.

It's the same for, say, . The flagship BookWyrm server is “dominating” the “bookshelf UI/UX” space, however, outside of that, it's just another software. The only difference is that with BookWyrm, you get a shelf, track your book reading, leave reviews to a specific book, and so on.

However, everything else are the same… if you leave a comment or posts an update about the book you are reading, it is no different from using , , , , , , , to post a new update that “I am not at page 879 of the book ‘Shaka. When the Walls Fell’.”

And as far as the fediverse is concerned, BookWyrm is far from “dominating” the network.

All these talk about and complaints about this, that, this, and that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from .

()? Check out and (the latter is in the ). / ? There is , , Hubzilla, Streams, to mention a few. Oh! Many Mastodon forks have it as well. You want a -like UI/UX? Use Akkoma or . What else?

The problem stems from the fediverse ending up unofficially represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.

What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.

No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.

Also, no one is saying shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.

Here's a : Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.

Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!

In , the phrase “observable universe” came into use to describe what we can see/observe from our vantage point.

The fediverse has grown so big since its humble beginnings in 2008. My guess is, we are only seeing 0.5% of what it is today. That is your “observable fediverse”, relative from your account.

  1. The instances your instance are aware of.
  2. The remote users your local instance natives are replying/boosting.
  3. The remote users you, yourself is following.
  4. And the remote users being boosted/replied to by the remote users you are following.

Those are the only ones in your . My observable fediverse is different from your observable fediverse. I am seeing content you are not seeing, and vice versa.

Just like how improving our technologies help us expand our . We need to grow our network to expand our relative observable fediverse.

The only difference between observable universe and observable fediverse is that, we still haven't found life on other planets; but in the fediverse, we already did (see: https://c.im/@youronlyone/110159720528061374).

If I will a software that needs support (developer and financial(?)), it is .

Plume is “a federated blogging application”. Basically, it is a blogging software that was made for the fediverse network.

Features I like:

  1. It has comments. The comments also pulls from the fediverse.
  2. Collaborative writing.
  3. License chooser

The project is currently on hiatus, as per the status update on the official website: https://joinplu.me

> Currently, Plume developers have less time and Plume is not actively maintained. New features may take time to be implemented. Could you consider similar purpose software: WriteFreely.

It would be great to see Plume back in action.

If you want to see a sample post, search this URL in your instance: https://fediverse.blog/~/WhenSnowFalls/The%20Open-Source%20Portal:%20Adventures%20Across%20the%20Multiverse

Leave a comment, and load the same URL in your browser directly.

And… this is a , or .

I think, one of the reason used against this feature from way back in 2016 (when Mastodon first came out), was that it disconnects the conversation. Once it's disconnected, you do not know what's happening (borders on moderation already).

I remember saying then and now that it doesn't have to be. A QuotePost/QuoteReply can still be shown within the same thread.

Since it was all about choice and permissions, I suggested the following:
Original Poster

  • toggle: disallow quoteposts/quotereplies (default is false)
  • if above is false, then, toggle: allow quoteposts attached to your thread (default is true)

QuotePost/QuoteReply

  • if “disallow quoteposts” == false && “allow quoteposts attached” == true, then offer
  • toggle: disconnect from the original thread (default is false)

I would like to think that most would keep it ‘false’. And if “toggle disallow quotepost” is true, then the only way is to manually copy the link into a new post (not using the quotepost feature itself).

It satisfies the OP's desire to make a decision about quoteposts/quotereplies; while at the same time, it also satisfies the freedom of the other users.

It isn't perfect, and it's probably not a good idea to implement this level of control/permissions. But, I think it addresses the concerns of both parties in the debate.

I, for one, would prefer quoteposts/quotereplies to be attached to the original thread. But, at the same time, I want to give the users an option to ‘disconnect’ from the original thread.

Anyway…

When you are quoteposting/quotereplying to a thread in , the quotepost/quotereply still shows in the original thread, like this one, when viewed from Calckey. It doesn't when viewed from other / software.

A new version of software was released today: v2023.04.

Announcement

We are very happy to announce the availability of the new stable release of Friendica “Giant Rhubarb" 2023.04. The highlights of this release are

  • The Mastodon compatible API of Friendica was improved,
  • Drag and Drop functionality was added to the Frio theme for image attachments, and
  • Christian Pöschl from usd AG reported a XSS fulnurability in a javascript dependency in the gallery of the Frio theme that was fixed.

What is Friendica?

Friendica is a decentralized communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumblr.

A to those trying other software: Treat your new account as you would signing-up in a new .

A more detailed :
1. Let each of your account grow separately.

It is fine to follow certain groups and users. These are your ‘core’ interaction. But for the rest, keep them separate and let it grow organically.

2. Define a certain theme or topic or purpose for your new account.

Since we are in an interconnected network, you will end up having a major overlap between your first account and your succeeding accounts. Which might confuse you later (as well as your followers).

For example, I still post my new articles through my @youronlyone account, for two major reasons: Follower Badge, and support via .

3. Use this opportunity to learn how discovery, growth, and reach, works in the (or )

By letting your new account grow organically, and keeping the overlap with your first account at a minimum, you will be able to observe how discovery, growth, and reach, works in the network.

I have an account for at @youronlyone

I also have an account for at @youronlyone

The Misskey and Calckey accounts are organically growing. I also discover new people, new content, that I haven't seen in my account (@youronlyone). And I asked myself, why? As I find answers to that question, I slowly adjust my interactions, and this in turn helped me discover more and reach wider.

The Mycelial Network (as I now prefer to call the Fediverse), is huge. When it started in 2008, it was small, and we all know each other. Today, I've probably only discovered and reached 0.5% of the network. It grew that fast.
