In my column this week I talk about one of my favorite tax frauds (to write about, that is) -- biofuel "rounding."
Basically, one tanker of #biofuel is circled between the refinery and some distribution point to generate multiple tax credits on the same x gallons of fuel.
Simple billion-dollar fraud made possible by loopholes you can drive a tanker truck through.
I'm sceptical of that "90% lower" claim. How could burning "poop" AKA a #biofuel, emit less CO2 than standard jet fuel? Also, if scaled up, that poop would most probably be sourced from farm animals that emit methane
Another #greenwashing idea from the aviation industry. Essentially, that's all they can do because the aviation industry can't be sustainable (not that physics will stop them lying about it. And of course the Jet setting consumers are primed to accep any "less CO2" claim)

What would it take to make aviation green in the EU?
Most Europeans have heard of "flight shaming," and now the EU hopes green jet fuel will be the answer to aviation emissions. The bloc has set ambitious production targets, but not everyone is sold.
This morning in London I saw this warning sign on a tanker that looked (from the text on the outside) as though it was carrying Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil - HVO, a biofuel made from vegetable oil, I think.
Given the apparently unhappy status of the fish and the tree, it’s not really selling itself as the way to a safer and more biologically sensitive future. But, you know, better to be honest about it. #climate#energy#biofuel
