Fedora CoreOS is great for the server use case, but it might be tricky for someone new to it. How does it use rpm-ostree? What is Butane? What are Ignition files? But once you get going, it might be your new favorite way to manage a homelab (and more)!

The Fedora Project is taking rpm-ostree and atomic systems to the next level with our bootc community initiative!

The goal is to evolve Fedora Atomic Desktops, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora IoT to incorporate bootable containers. You will get the benefit of an atomic OS on your computer while unlocking a world of customization through the cloud native development model.

"Due to a bug in rpm-ostree, the '/etc/[g]shadow[-]' files in Fedora CoreOS, Fedora IoT and Fedora Atomic Desktops have the world-readable bit set.

To fix impacted systems immediately, run the following command as root:
$ chmod --verbose 0000 /etc/shadow /etc/gshadow /etc/shadow- /etc/gshadow-

Right, I’m back to focussing on Domain* now that another round of dev is complete on Kitten** and, two years after I originally asked the question: does anyone know of a comparable service to Hetzner Cloud (API, affordable, very quick server setup, VPS) that supports CoreOS?

I still can’t find any. And my attempts to get Hetzner to support it have failed (mostly due to lack of interest on Fedora’s side) 🤷‍♂️

(A few notes:

  • Setting up a server and then installing CoreOS is out of the question. Small Web sites have to be set up in under a minute.

  • Must be affordable. We need to be sustainable while not charging more than €10/mo.)

  • EU-based.

Right now, it seems I’ll have to go with Ubuntu although I really don’t want to as I want the rpm-ostree auto-updates in CoreOS to make the sites zero admin as possible.)

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

Looks like Vultr has it but it’s too expensive. We’d have to charge at least €25/mo instead of ~€10/mo for a Small Web site with Hetzner to make the same ~€5/mo to try and make Small Technology Foundation sustainable.

And I really want Small Web sites to be affordable so folks can experiment and play with them.

Looks like Hetzner Cloud support was added to coreos/ignition at the end of last year.

Really wondering what needs doing to get CoreOS support into Hetzner at this point and who to talk to to hopefully get this done.

Starting tomorrow we have a series of Test Days coming for different projects. Maybe contribute with testing for the ones that pique your interest?

  • Mar 20-26: @Podman_io Desktop (for Windows and macOS as well)
  • Mar 21-26: Podman 5
  • Mar 25 - Apr 1: Fedora CoreOS
  • Mar 27: (Toolbx) @containertoolbx

Playing with on physical nodes, it enables using OCI container images as base of physical nodes OS and rebasing physical nodes between different OCI images, complete with blue/green style rollback. Playing now

My yearly call out into the ether to see if @fedora and @Hetzner_Online can make CoreOS a first-class citizen on Hetzner.

https://github.com/coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker/issues/1324

As the comes closer to being a thing with the launch of Domain this year, I’d really love for it to run on maintenance-free auto-updating instances instead of Ubuntu. But it looks like I’m forced to go with it as I can’t otherwise find affordable VPS hosting that can create an instance as quickly as Hetzner can.

Oh great, I managed to install in a VPS that doesn't allow custom OS images, starting form a CentOS installation, tweaking with grub, ipxe and ignition

We have a server-focused custom image called uCore!

It's @fedora CoreOS + extra things like Cockpit and Distrobox. Also comes with versions that have Nvidia drivers and ZFS.

Check it out! https://github.com/ublue-os/ucore/

Finally got around setting up my #selfhosted RSS using #miniflux and #Unread on #macOS and #iOS using the #Fever API integration of miniflux, and #NewsFlash on #GNOME :)

After sitting down to do it, it was quite a breeze and I even got to try #Quadlet for #Podman and #Systemd on my #CoreOS servers.

Sometimes technology can indeed actually be amazing :D

Over the next two days all @fedora nodes out there that have automatic updates enabled should be updated to Fedora 39 (or at least have the update staged)!

It's kind of crazy that up until June of this year, RHEL (not clone) adoption was up at work, we were in negotiations for buying Openshift, and I hadn't used any form of SUSE since 2006. Now, all previous RHEL instances are running some form of SUSE, Rancher adoption to production happened at an absolutely unreal pace. SUSE took over a little AlmaLinux ground, but not as much as AlmaLinux gained.

@vwbusguy I like CoreOS a lot. You might not know, but there is very good story with it for device edge. I have this small rig at work which runs some smaller edge boxes with Red Hat Device Edge (coreos). There is plenty to do with rh coreos, we should make it more visible. Check out image builder, you can build own variants with it. It's super! And if you look at fedora ostree variants, the usage is not shrinking.

How I learned to stop worrying and love the CoreOS

Here’s a blog post to answer the question: Why do you write so much about CoreOS? 📦

@major@social.lol avatar

docker-compose is great, but I love using @fedora CoreOS lately and I want to use the built-in tools it provides. I also want automatic updates without a privileged watchtower container running.

That's when I learned to love the quadlets. ❤️

Quadlets might make me finally stop using docker-compose:

Hello everyone, so at my new job I'll get a MacBook snd until #AsahiLinux supports the security processor I will be a good girl and use #macOS. For someone coming from a setup mixing #ArchLinux, #Fedora #Silverblue / #CoreOS, even some #NixOS and does weird stuff with #podman sometimes: Are there some general recommendations from other #Linux exiles (I use vanilla #GNOME nowadays mostly, so maybe not too much lol?)

I currently plan to use the mac as mostly a shiny looking physical terminal + some vscode/vi, that should be mostly trivial. As such I'm mostly worried about things like a proper keyboard layout (I use us altgr-intl, caps mapped to ctrl, tab to esc).

Otherwise I'm thinking of grabbing #Firefox and activating Lockdown Mode. I've seen nix-home and will try setting that up for day-to-day tasks/tools.

Coming from Evolution, is Apple Mail decent? Any other "classic" GNOME tool I'd miss? Currently looking for trustworthy replacements for Nick's YT downloader, Warp (Wormhole GUI), Frog (OCR tool), Obfuscate (picture obfuscator/censoring tool), Characters (searching through Unicode symbols/emoji). Anything else I may take for granted but is different? ¹

¹ I already know the cli differences w.r.t. bsd based tools, but my personal scripts are mostly posix/ksh8x compliant anyway :D

Wow I was not expecting the drive I plugged in to be a @Solus :solus: 1.2.1 install from October 2016!

Doing some prep work to have go on my home server, so was plugging in drives to check their contents, wipe if needed, etc. before getting to work on Ignite config via Butane. Had an old 500GB I was expecting to be maybe some Nextcloud files or similar.

Nope, content (and drive) clearly much older and uhhh...certainly will stay as a museum piece instead of getting wiped.

turns 32 today! 🎂 How long have you used Linux? And how/why did you first start to use it?

woodrat,

@rm4 about 20 years ...it became a in when i was bored with my homework and became limited in scope, for me ... a car wreck that broke my skull sophomore year really helped give me free time to learn ...it became my and i'm obsessed with it to this day
