Right, I’m back to focussing on Domain* now that another round of dev is complete on Kitten** and, two years after I originally asked the question: does anyone know of a comparable service to Hetzner Cloud (API, affordable, very quick server setup, VPS) that supports CoreOS?
I still can’t find any. And my attempts to get Hetzner to support it have failed (mostly due to lack of interest on Fedora’s side) 🤷♂️
Looks like Vultr has it but it’s too expensive. We’d have to charge at least €25/mo instead of ~€10/mo for a Small Web site with Hetzner to make the same ~€5/mo to try and make Small Technology Foundation sustainable.
And I really want Small Web sites to be affordable so folks can experiment and play with them.
At least Vultr admits that this content ownership thing was a mistake and they took it out. I’m surprised they kept such a boilerplate text before it got caught.
That is probably why it’s good idea to read the ToS and even EULAs. You don’t know what clauses that is lurking there. At least their response is reasonable, unlike Hetzner with how they handled the SFW yuri image debacle.
They are in damage control mode, everything they say is PR, don't trust anything they say.
Even if they revert the TOS change immediately, it was in effect for years apparently, so they could easily have already harvested data and continue selling it. The grant the TOS claims is "perpetual".
VCs travel in packs and every other hosting company will now consider this maneuver fair game unless Vultr loses more money than it makes off of this.
Apparently it’s not a new thing, which makes me believe that people do not read the ToS before signing up to a new service, just like EULAs. Maybe because it’s too long to read, thus users just accept and click next.
The VPS #Vultr is pulling a #Roku by forcing people into agreeing to their new TOS that will give them full perpetual commercial rights over all your hosted content.
There is no way to decline and you can't access your control panel unless you click agree.
I suspect they're planning to sell your data to AI model creators.
This is the second phase of the enshitification process. I recommend jumping ship now.
Again about #Vultr, does anyone know how to disable the #reCAPTCHA on logging in with email? I know everyone loves it, but I always find it on the very border of what I can actually use due to impaired hearing. The lack of context in the words is sometimes seriously annoying.
I think this is probably known to everyone interested but, just in case... For #blind users of #Vultr, I strongly suspect that the Windows standard 2022 image comes with audio enabled. I logged in with remote desktop and had audio, and could then get my portable #NVDA running nicely and remotely. This is new to me, I used to have to enable audio manually if I wanted it and didn't want to upload an image.
Our team is trying to transfer the object store for Newsie and it turns out they are 100% 502 if I try to access the NJ Object Storage platform from inside a Vultr instance.
So our team thought something funny was happening, and checked the IP for vultrobjects.com and it's a different IPv6 from inside their network.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Well we can at least access the object storage from outside... just slower.
@jibsaramnim
Many Fediverse servers in South Korea have been using #Vultr. In recent weeks, there have been frequent failures and database losses. Many servers have undergone emergency maintenance and one server has been shut down.
The invoice from #Vultr just came in for May. $15 compared to $75 from #AWS. 🤣 I think I'll be sticking with Vultr…Especially since I'm on a really tight budget now.
