DeSantis’ New Insurance Law Could Make It Harder to Rebuild After Hurricane Idalia

The legislation makes it difficult to sue insurance companies for short-changing policyholders.

The sweeping revisions make it more difficult for homeowners to sue their property insurance companies for acting in “bad faith” and remove the right of homeowners to recover attorney’s fees, even in lawsuits they ultimately win.

Good! Maybe Floridians will start to understand that DeSantis and his mob are not what they need. If not, they get what they get.

C0ppert0p,

@GW was this a deal he made to entice insurance companies back into the state.?The man is such a scumbag, even if it’s not true

They Were Promised Help With Payments. Then They Got a Notice.

enrolled in Nevada’s mortgage assistance program have received foreclosure notices when the money fails to make its way from the federal government to the loan providers on time.

Sandywb,
deltacharlie,

@ProPublica This is akin to asking the local mafia if there is any crime in the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the government was also the cause of foreclosures by allowing lenders to provided mortgages above and beyond what people can afford.

Most Americans cannot even explain what a mortgage is, or where those dollars come from or how it works. Such irresponsible behavior should be prevented, not rewarded. But that is human nature.

Homeowners Trying to Get Out of “We Buy Ugly Houses” Deals Find Little Relief in State, Federal Laws

ProPublica found few jurisdictions have laws or regulations to protect from aggressive tactics short of fraud or elder abuse.

humansriseup,

@ProPublica Rigging the housing market and thieving at the same time. Since 2007 it’s been a 💩 show. DOJ missing out on many federal indictments. On purpose. This may get traction for reporting it. Look at all ex Trump appointees. Wasting 3 Trillion in 4 years. And all the damage done from EPA & OSHA’s years of data, destroyed. Paid for by taxpayers. Only evil would do that. 2 billion reasons to investigate Jared. So many criminals! Serious criminals.

Oh no, those poor boomers!

SJ0,

That just sounds like the natural course of insurance companies fleecing their customers.

Payouts were way down during the pandemic, yet everyone’s rates went way up. Now they’re saying claims might go up, and rates will go way up.

Crazy how no matter what happens they need to raise premiums a whole lot!

The Ugly Truth Behind “We Buy Ugly Houses”

A ProPublica investigation — based on court documents, #property records, company training materials and interviews with 48 former franchise owners and dozens of #homeowners — found HomeVestors franchisees that used #deception and targeted the #elderly, infirm and those so close to #poverty that they feared homelessness would be a consequence of selling.

BUT WAIT -- THERE'S MORE!

After we contacted for this story, the company's CEO instructed franchisees not to click on ProPublica’s story link; doing so, he warned, might improve its internet search ranking.

“Our goal is to bury it,” he said.

Does anyone have any experience with hybrid electric heat pump water heaters in colder climates (I’m in Northeast Ohio)?

derek,

@bastianallgeier @Luke Ooo, tell me more about your decentralized community heating!

I think it should be able to handle colder incoming water just fine, but it may just take longer to get to the set temp and/or we may have to use the electric heating element instead of just the HP (but I hope to not have to do that).

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@derek @Luke it sounds cooler than it is. Our area has its own little wood pellet plant with gas as fallback. We have to use it which would be absolutely fine, but it’s super expensive because they calculated it with inefficient houses from 2 decades ago.
