When you've got your period and so sick that you can't cook a proper lunch, but you also need something a bit fancy to feel good about 🍀 Incidentally, I heard recently that eating khichuri on Tuesdays and Saturdays helps in remediating the malefics. This is technically a khichuri; not a traditionally spiced and wok-stirred one, but simpler.

Indians are highly satisfied with their democracy, and at the same time show great support for rule by an autocratic 'strong leader'. On one hand they show high approval for a direct democracy, on the other they support rule by technocrats. Here's a look at India's political complexity using 3 scatter plot charts based on Pew's latest survey.

The recent SC judgement on electoral bonds has revived the debate on political funding in India. Although the judgement has received praise, the issue with political funding in the country goes beyond just electoral bonds. HT's two-part data journalism series will try to explain these issues in detail.

Dear Bengalureans,

Ever since FOSS.IN, Bengaluru has always been a home of Free and open-source software developers, evangelists and enthusiasts. I believe that is just a matter of time before Fediverse is lovingly embraced by Bengalureans.

ActivityPub (a W3C standard) based Fediverse provides several benefits compared to traditional centralized social networking platforms such as decentralization, user choice, reduced risk of data breaches and misuse of personal information, enhanced user control, increased resiliency, greater leeway for content creation, alternate monetization models, self hosting etc. Nearly all Fediverse platforms are free and open-source software.

I look forward to you, Bengalureans, joining The Fediverse and actively participating with vibrant posts using the hashtag . However, in reality, many of us are not using hashtags. So I created a new Fediverse Group.

If anyone mentions the address !@nammabengaluru in a post, it will be boosted to everyone who follows the Group. (Note: adding ! at the start of the address will not boost the post). For now, I have chosen to add a restriction of approving new followers. Only public posts and replies are boosted. Private messages to the group are rejected.

Let's hope both the hashtag and the Fediverse Group !@nammabengaluru will be popular.

This is an interesting observation. Let us appreciate the fact that, to the best of my knowledge, Linux Bangalore and later FOSS.IN were pioneers in creating awareness of Free and open-source software in Bengaluru and, to some extent, rest of India. Also Atul Chitnis is no longer with us, since last eleven years, to pariticpate in such discussions. That chapter is closed and we have moved on.

On paper, the BJP now has a coalition with the two largest regional parties in Maharashtra—Shiv Sena and NCP. But politics in the state is far from settled and the churn continues. What is the reason for this uncertainty? Today's tries to answer this question. Read online (HT app exclusive): https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/number-theory-the-political-black-box-that-is-maharashtra-101708314294632.html @mastodonindians

BJP has tried but it cannot win the state alone The biggest proof of this came in the 2014 assembly elections which were held months after the Lok Sabha polls. Both the NCP and the Shiv Sena contested on their own in these elections rather than allying with their traditional alliance partners, the Congress and the BJP. While the BJP did finish as the single largest party with 122 MLAs, it fell short of the half-way mark of 145 in the assembly and had to get into a post-poll alliance with the Shiv Sena to form a government. For the Congress, the situation was even more difficult as it was reduced to just 42 MLAs in the assembly, just one ahead of the NCP. 2014 was the not the first election in Maharashtra which destroyed any one party’s ambition to rule the state. No single party has managed to win a majority of its own in the state since 1990. This is what makes the support of either NCP or Shiv Sena crucial in Maharashtra’s politics. (Chart: Seat share of Shiv Sena & NCP in the Maharashtra assembly polls)
This is what made the MVA a big worry for the BJP The 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election was primarily fought between the alliance of BJP-Shiv Sena and Congress-NCP. However, after the declaration of results, the alliance between Uddhav Thackeray-led-Shiv Sena and the BJP broke down, with the Sena demanding its own chief minister rather than the BJP which was the senior partner in the alliance. What followed was a grand coalition of Congress-NCP-Shiv Sena, called Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) which formed the government with Thackeray as the Chief Minister. Data from 2014 assembly elections shows that Congress together with undivided Shiv Sena and NCP would have electorally been a formidable force. If the votes received by the three parties in 2014 were added up in each constituency, the Congress-NCP-Shiv Sena alliance would have won a total of 218 seats, way past the majority mark. Meanwhile, the BJP would have lost 60 seats it won originally from its tally. (Chart showing the 2014 assembly election results with and without adding votes garnered by INC-NCP-SHS together)
But the MVA was anything but a natural alliance To be sure, the Congress and NCP are not natural alliance partners of Shiv Sena, considering the latter’s stark difference in ideology. In fact, Shiv Sena have historically been anti-Congress until it broke its alliance with the BJP and formed the MVA. These ideological splits can also be seen in their performance in 2014 assembly election, when all the four parties contested elections on their own. The largest number of wins for each of them came against their ideological rivals, i.e. both Shiv Sena and BJP individually won most number of seats against Congress and NCP and vice versa. For example, out of the 41 seats that NCP won in 2014, 29 came against Shiv Sena (19) and the BJP (10). In the case of Shiv Sena, out of the 63 seats it won, as many as 34 came against its ideological rivals Congress (16) and NCP (18). The same trend could be seen for both Congress and the BJP as well. (Chart: Seats independently won against each party in the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections) What next? Having dislodged the MVA from power with majority (and now officially recognized) factions of the NCP and the Shiv Sena behind it, the BJP would be hoping to enjoy a formidable alliance for its 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly battle. What remains to be seen is whether the official groups will enjoy the popularity they had or will it still rest with the founders of these two parties, namely the Thackerays and Sharad Pawar.

Thus, in the coming 2024 elections, while it is unlikely that Muslims will vote entirely on their caste or any other sub-identity, it is clear that sub-identities will shape both campaigning and voting to some degree."

Generations of indie dogs have experienced hunger (sometimes starvation), injuries that go untreated, risk of road accidents, abuse from unfriendly humans, etc. over the years, which has left them scared and untrusting, with a strong will to fight for survival.

This also means they are stronger, tougher and more resilient—a combination that makes them ideal, if not perfect companions!

The Global Liveability Index 2023, from Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU), is available now. It ranks the cities that have the best and worst living conditions and quality of life around the world. EIU’s liveability index quantifies the challenges presented to an individual’s lifestyle and standard of living in 173 cities worldwide. The index measures cities on five broad indicators — stability, culture and environment, healthcare, education and infrastructure. The highest score a city can get is 100.

Bengaluru (Bangalore) secured 148th spot with a score of 58.7. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmadabad have slightly better scores.

I believe Bengaluru (Bangalore) has the competence and the bandwidth to rank much better. All that is required in political will. If somebody has lived in Bengaluru even for few weeks, the first obvious expectation for improvement will be better traffic management, roads, public transport and cleaner city with less pollution. Bengaluru has the highest traffic density of any major Indian city, with close to 12.5 million vehicles for a population of 11 million. This clearly shows that there is lot of scope to improve the efficiency of public transport system which will deter people from using personal vehicles.
