We had the entire patio to ourselves ๐Ÿ™‚
At Brown's Social in downtown with my friend, Natalie. She's a horticulturalist, living in Deep Cove. We had some eats & drinks before going across street for PechaKucha Night VOL. 20.

They played tunes, the whole time we were there. We lucked out on getting street parking, one block away. Then lucked out on empty patio, on arrival. We had our own fire table ๐Ÿฅฐ

1/6 โ€œAnimacy is an overdetermined word, but so is the idea of the Divine Feminine. The reason I have begun to shy away from the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Masculine is their unfortunate identification with gender and, more importantly, their overidentification with humans and their myopic classifications generally. Animacy is plushier. Springier. More mosslike. It seems a soft spot to rest on while I try to understand and explain how very sentient the world is to me these days.

In case anyone's interested, there's an article about MDZS in Strange Horizons:

http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/feminising-culture-in-the-grandmaster-of-demonic-cultivation/

(No, I haven't read it yet. I was looking for something else and found this, but given the popularity of MDZS, maybe other ppl will be interested, also this serves as a bookmark for myself)

I havenโ€™t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants Iโ€™ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)

(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply arenโ€™t vegetable-centered)

(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

I will be starting to create home #exercise vids for fellow #PhysicallyDisabledFolks, starting this month. Exercises will be as #inclusive & #accessible as possible.

Several of them will be done in a chair. Some standing & others are laying down. I don't see many exercise vids made by & for #disabled folks available online. I got frustrated, trying to find exercise vids, made by fellow disabled folks.

So, I'm going to stop complaining about lack of them. I'll start to create them, myself.

Does anyone use handmade personalised calendars? I don't know if that's a thing, but I'm throwing this out hoping that it'll find someone who knows this stuff. I'm not talking about a bullet journal, just a calendar, but a layered one, with all sorts of stuff that one might find useful and interesting on a daily basis, stuff varying from person to person, and handmade (that can be hand sorted and illustrated or designed and printed).

If you've ever wondered how a plantation looks like. The tree with the smallest girth will fetch roughly โ‚น10k or $120.

People are constantly advised not to plant them but who can control human greed, it always takes over. Nothing but the teak grows in these plantations - no birds nor rats, insects, or snakes. Depressing to be honest.

toridas_,
@toridas_@wandering.shop avatar

@Deus but don't the teak trees themselves attract any wildlife? Not contradicting, just asking.

Mango season is coming. Here's my short S Asian mango primer, and some ideas on where to buy them (I'm only focused on the ones you can buy outside S Asia, so if you're like 'the type that drops in my grandma's garden in the Konkan coast is the best', great, keep some for me)

toridas_,
@toridas_@wandering.shop avatar

@skinnylatte a lot of Bengalis (myself included) will drop everything for a succulent Himsagar mango. But people are saying the harvest will be small this year because mangoes fruit best in alternate years, and last year had been a good mango year ๐Ÿ˜ž The only mango that comes anywhere close to Himsagar is the Dussehri.

Today for I:

๐Ÿ€ made เฆฒเง‡เฆฌเงเฆฐ เฆถเฆฐเฆฌเฆค for myself and BFFs (they've never had it with tulsi before)
๐Ÿฆ‹ helped a black and white butterfly trapped in my home escape into the garden on the back of my black umbrella patterned with pink roses and green leaves
๐ŸŒฟ a bundle of fresh jute leaves BFF#2 bought me that I can make a soup of, with one perfect yellow flower
๐Ÿชฎ got a pair of wood combs that I'd bought myself for Pรดyla Boishakh (great scalpfeel)

Closeup of very soft and green jute leaves, one leaf among them with noticeable tears in it, with one dainty little yellow flower blooming on the green stalk.
Against a background of yellow walls, black granite counter and shelves, a bit of window and bicycle, a brown hand (mine) with short squarely rounded nails holding a pair of wood combs. They're shortish but hefty. One is a wide-toothed "post-shampoo detangler" and the other is a fine-toothed "styling comb". The combs have got a company brand carved on them.

Tidbit: The ferns we get in these parts are not carcinogenic as opposed to the ones consumed/found in Korea, Japan, and other other countries (e.g. Bracken fern and Fiddlehead fern). There are about 10500 species of ferns. Found it interesting when I first heard about it so felt like sharing.

there's a restaurant in my neighborhood that blasts obnoxious anti-homeless sounds. the goal i think is to repel homeless people from loitering, but i think they've ended up repelling any guests (it's so loud you can't stop hearing it from the seated parts of the restaurant)

looking forward to hearing them whine about how it's the bike lanes or the anti-car measures that have led to their demise, soon

As someone whose home food is mostly coastal southern Chinese food, steaming is one of the cooking techniques Iโ€™m most familiar with. I feel I can steam anything (fish, meat, vegetables, tofu, eggs, even breads and dessert) and I donโ€™t think of that food as โ€˜plainโ€™.

Thinking Iโ€™d like to write about this. What would you like to learn about steaming food?

toridas_,
@toridas_@wandering.shop avatar

@skinnylatte I'd like to read more about steaming fish! Over here the simplest version of a chicken curry that can be eaten in summer is chicken marinaded in ginger, onion, garlic, oil, salt, turmeric, and lime/yoghurt, and steamed with plenty of water in a pressure cooker. But I don't hear much about steamed fish that's as simple. Usually steamed fish recipes have a lot of mustard and poppy seed paste going in as well, and eating that much mustard in the summer is, um, not great for everyone.
