I'm hoping to have the code review for my Fediverse Embeds WordPress plugin wrapped up over the next week or two.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped me test it!

There's a few minor issues I'm currently looking into, and I'd still appreciate folks giving it a try before the full release.

One specific question I have for folks, I am using the 👑 emoji as an optional (can be disabled in plugin settings) label for server admins.

Are there better options?

There's currently an incident involving some kind of Japanese skids who call themselves the "Kuroneko" organization.

They seem to be attempting to commit DDoS attacks on Misskey servers, constantly creating new accounts on compromised instances and spamming advertisements for their hacking services.

Admins who are federating with these compromised servers, while they might not get compromised themselves, may be affected by the sheer amount of traffic volume from their spam.

Admins are advised to #fediblock or temporarily stop sending requests to affected servers for now, if they don't want to get secondhand DoS'd

IMO I never expected them to be Japanese out of all things, kinda funny. They also host VOICEROID and VOICEVOX TTS bots on their Discord apparently. Kinda a weird flex I guess.

But yeah, probably just a bunch of skids.

Good News ! 📣

Here is an automation script for 🐘 to simplify and facilitate the installation, configuration, & hardening of Mastodon on a new server.

Dive into the script at https://github.com/Honeytree-Technologies/Mastodon-Auto-Installer.

Tailor it to your needs. If you appreciate the effort, give it a star and spread the word!

Feedback and ideas are always welcome, so please reach out.

Wishing you smooth deployments! 🛠️

Just a heads up that there will be update is coming to the Mastodon Auto-installer script in just a few days.

It'll be fully interactive, meaning no more code modifications in the script! 🎉 Simply respond to the server prompts during script execution.

And guess what's next? We're considering a GUI installation wizard! 🔮

Check it out here:

ATTENTION ALL ADMINS!

With regards to the latest wave of spam, the below URL provides some really good information that is worth checking into for your specific instance.

I too had this user account that was created January 20th, and suspended February 7th. Last active: TODAY!

I have force reset the password for this account. Hopefully this precents it from being used from our instance to send spam.

Yesterday, there was news that the kid that was responsible for this huge wave of spam had been arrested and that the spam should stop because of that.

Not sure if that's the case or not, or if this is some other wave of spam that's happening. I've already reported and/or blocked 100+ accounts as of a few minutes ago and I've only been awake since 5am EST.

Sad that people on Mastodon, such as @SirCandinavian go around telling people to "KILL THEMSELVES".

I really hope others can and will report this user for their comments.

I hope this isn't the type of users that @adam allows on their instance.

If I upload a large image or video to my instance, am I wasting only the space and bandwidth of my own instance, or others' too?

A really great addition to the search functionality, particularly on small/one-person instances, would be an option to specify which instances will be included.

Does this sound feasible?

Hello @askfedi_de - Liebe , gibt es einen Weg einen kleinen neuen Server schnell zu föderieren, damit wir hier auch an allen Hashtags und Beiträgen teilhaben können und Leute direkt ohne Umwege wiederfinden können?

So I was going to make a small update to my tool for analyzing fediverse export files to celebrate having made my 5,000th post last night, and also to better understand how I got to that number, and I am having trouble understanding how Mastodon counts your posts.

If I count private mentions, my total is higher, but if I exclude them, I get a number below 5,000.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Frage an die Mastodon-Admins: funktionieren bei Euch aktuell tootctl media remove und ähnliches seit dem Wechsel auf 4.2.5?

chris, to random
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

My understanding of the current issues is that it is people taking advantage of open registration instances. Essentially hijacking.. which is causing small-instance admins like me to domain-block those instances for sanity.

Question: Assuming the spammers will eventually be removed from the victim instances, is there a 'whitelist’ somewhere that community could consult so we can unblock domains that should no longer be a problem?

Thanks!
