Hey , I need your assistance. I almost have my instance set up. However, when I do any authentication related, such as logging in or resetting my password, I get a 'Security verification failed' error.

So a massive Mastodon update is out?

I think this chicken admin is going to wait for any teething problems to surface before following through.... 😉

So, my post from my personal instance shows up on mastodon.social when I browse one of the hashtags I used.

But it doesn't come up when I search for one of the non-hashtagged words.

I do see posts from other instances, though. Can't really wrap my head around how this works.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

For anyone following along, the post now does show up in search.

So there is indeed a delay between when a server knows about a post (via a hashtag, for example), and when it shows up in search.

Interesting.

It's great to see the progress Mastodon has made over the past few months, and the 4.2.0 release has a lot of interesting updates.

But I sure hope that upgrading gets easier in the future. Having to run all these commands manually makes me really appreciate how, for example, WordPress does it.

For the that have deployed the 4.2.0 rc releases.

What impact have you seen on server loading with the new codebase?

We've been testing in our sandbox but don't have a large enough user load to get any sort of handle on this.

Thx in advance.

Mastodon RC1 is giving me problems... (see screenshot):

Could not find puma-6.3.1, ...
...
... faraday-retry-1.0.3, multipart-post-2.3.0 in cached gems or installed locally

I have no idea what to do about this. Everything I found on the internet like removing vendor dir didn't help...

Switching from Apache to Varnish has definitely made a big difference in performance for my Serendipitous server. Mastodon is pretty noisy and a simple thing like changing my profile summary (which generates 700+ external connections pretty much instantly) was enough to overwhelm the Apache reverse proxy server. Varnish (using Hitch for TLS) handles it with aplomb.

Something I don't understand is how one of the biggest fund raising out there is straight running out of cash.

Maybe dude needs to learn to optimize hardware usage better, or something, but 2300/month is ridiculously expensive unless you're driving some SERIOUS traffic.

  • TheAdmin,

    @sfunk1x

    is a big problem for and the way that it's currently (not) handled in the fediverse is why our insurance rates are so high.

    For Newsie and a couple of test instances we write a module that scans the timelines for csam and handles appropriately.

    See: https://newsie.social/@jeff@honeytree.social/110819974743547206

    The module is very resource intensive and needs to run on a sizable vps or it bogs down. The cost would be too large for most small instance admins.

    A couple of questions for the Mastodon admins out there:

    • what techniques do you use to load-test an instance?

    • when you’ve made major changes to an instance (e.g. move to a new server) what sort of tests do you do before re-opening to the world?

    Salut @dt 👋

    et mentions à tous les et ⚠️ poke @tiesselune, @tournesol, @coco et vos potes !

    Je découvre à l'instant l'outil https://mnemo.social/ que tu as créé @dt disponible à tous, sur lequel je retrouve mon compte personnel 😬

    Or, il ne me semble pas avoir donné un accord explicite pour pouvoir être listé sur ton service et je doute fortement que l'ensemble des personnes de mon instance aient elles aussi explicitement donné un tel accord 🤔

    De plus, ta page est assez obscure car elle ne donne aucun lien pour comprendre comment fonctionne l'outil, comment faire pour s'extraire de ton listing, l'usage que tu comptes en faire etc... ⚠️

    La bonne pratique il me semble en terme de gestion des données de chacun et à minima de recueillir l'accord des personnes ! Or, ce n'est pas parce que nous publions des informations publiquement sur notre serveur qu'on donne le droit à n'importe qui d'en faire n'importe quel usage, de surcroît d'en faire un listing de personnes !!! 😅

    Sur notre propre serveur les personnes peuvent choisir d'apparaître ou non dans l'annuaire, d'être trouvable ou non, alors ce n'est pas pour se retrouver sur un autre annuaire public sur lequel nous n'avons pas la main 👎

    Alors :

    1️⃣ dans un premier temps je te demanderais de bien vouloir exclure le domaine g33ks.coffee de ton outil s'il te plaît
    2️⃣ et dans un second temps je te suggère de changer la façon de récolter tes données et d'offrir la possibilité aux gens de s'inscrire, et non l'inverse

    Il ne fait aucun doute que les administrateurs des autres instances vont rapidement se tourner vers toi pour faire des demandes similaires, ainsi, si tu n'es pas en capacité de réaliser rapidement le premier 1️⃣ point, et ce de façon rapide & systématique, face à la pluie de demandes qui pourrait arriver, je te suggère de couper ton service dès maintenant ❗

    " is a free, open community" says most as they sit on their 100+ blocklist 🙄

    I understand that people have the right to curate what they want to see, but in my opinion, that's why individual users can ban users and even whole instances as they wish.

    🤷🏻‍♂️doesn't seem very "open" to me, if YOU choose who other users can interact with. That's just , except Dan, the weird guy down the street, owns the site and not a billionaire.

    Sure, don't let all the rich fucks tell you what you can and can't say. Don't let them tell you who you can and cannot interact with. But don't let Dan do it either. It makes no sense.

    @BeAware any kind of social media suffers of 3 basic forms or rubbish hitting our timeline: (1) the abuse of the unsolicited direct message, (2) the abuse of the # hashtags, and (3) unsolicited adds (which in a way is platform centrally controlled version of the first form).

    Hate and harassment come also in one of the same forms described above.

    Without any moderation, your timeline could be polluted to the point of rendering it unusable and unbearable.

    (regardless of the mechanism) is a way of 'suppressing' some content, which immediately triggers different views about what should be moderated and what not.

    There are very different approaches to moderation in the , from none or very little to very extreme and preemptive.

    The fact that the apps are and run by individuals gives these individuals the power to define those policies, I don't think we can do much about that, and I don't think is wrong either as it creates some space for flexibility and diversity.

    Of all the and moderators, the most important to us are the ones on the instance in which we 'live', because those are the ones who filter what we can see and the ones that would try to 'moderate us' and eventually suspend our account... all the others, are lesser relevant as if they don't want to read us, it is their loss... up to them.

    There are a lot of sensible out there, so there is a bit of searching and asking around... or even better, go with someone who is an actual offline friend of us... that will improve a lot our experience.

    I know both of us have taken the most extreme position, which is to run our own instances so we don't need to deal with this matter, but that may not be for everyone, so that is why I made the long-winded recommendation.

    @AnneMacro @bearcam Hmm, "Require follow requests" is unchecked, and I've had a few accounts follow the bot without me having to approve them.

    But I've seen this happen with some of my bots, where folks were able to follow them, but occasionally I get one or two requests.

    Is this maybe an instance-level setting?

    isn't planning to open up federation for anytime soon, IMHO. It was just a marketing bluff to get that sweet ad money from advertisers who need a new place to spend their money now that goes down the drain. That's why they created shadow accounts for Instagram users, so they can claim 100M users in just a few days. And you can only delete your threads account by deleting your complete Insta profile. Weirdest opt-out ever :)

    kikobar, (edited )
    @kikobar@acc4e.com avatar

    @jwildeboer Precisely.

    So far we have no evidence of Meta doing or even planning to ever implement , it is all hear say even when it comes from their own mouths, as no clear business case for it exists.

    Even if they did it, they will be an instance with 1.5 ~ 2 billion users... how long would you guess it would take for some extremists from to start annoying the folks in the and these in turn filing complains with their ?... there will be thousands of complains within minutes... so the admins would feel compelled to defederate Meta...

    And that will be the end of the drama.

    The only people who will remain federated with Meta will be people like you and I, who run their own instances and may not have a problem with dealing with some potential anti-social folks annoying us... an occasional add or a few crypto bros... but even us will defederate from Meta if our timelines become unbearable.

    Done!
    Was delayed by 20min by an unexpected guest bringing gifts! It took me a few minutes to find the recommended settings that needed to be added to nginx to harden the proxy service there. Otherwise, was easy as always. Updated apt packages at the same time. My PG database backup is now 330MB as opposed to 100MB when I started back in March. Increasing by about 2MB per day. The REDIS backup is only 16MB.
    My upgrade procedure is in the attached image.
