With Junethack 2024 (hopefully) right around the corner, it's a good time to watch this little dive into NetHack source code and discover the techniques, the humour, the philosophy of this great game:
Found some retro way to display #NetHack
One interesting thing — the BDF font editor is written in #TclTk and relase from 2003 runs perfectly on a modern system.
Now I think that to display 80 columns of symbols with 16x16 font you need at least 1280 pixels wide display…
Ahhh, re-wiring the finger macros and enjoying using a VT220 the way it was meant to be used. Running #nethack . (This one is running via the console serial port on a Pi zero. )
I'm joining the @nethackathon again this Saturday, at 08:00 UTC (10:00 CEST)! 26 Twitch streamers will be taking turns on the retro #roguelike#NetHack with shared characters. It will be a blast!
PSA: If you enjoy old school #roguelike games in the vein of #Nethack, and you've been wanting a mobile option, try Pathos, a.k.a. #PathosNethackCodex. It's free and ad free, developed by a single programmer (Callan Hodgskin), and features a few different 'codices' (gameplay modes), though I find the classic Nethack version to be the most enjoyable. Excellent touch controls, simplified gameplay that retains plenty of challenge, and 4 tilesets. Android, iOS, Linux & more!
#roguelike I always sleep listening to podcasts or YT videos. Last night (in my sleep), I enjoyed a 4 hour livestream of #nethack from Larry Fluckiger and woke up when he made it to the bottom level. Somehow deeply relaxing and exciting all at once. #sleepstudy https://youtu.be/be3z-TL9gD0?si=EEn8WvhSeX4fM2lU
@paxed Hey, do you know anyone experienced with the #NetHack codebase who might be interested in a paid commission for developing a fork? I'd do it myself, but I expect to need assistance while I learn the codebase. Would love to chat with someone about my idea in order to gauge the overall scope of the project.
I wonder what the oldest #videogame is that still has some kind of #online community. I was watching a #youtube video about people playing dead #ps2 games and it made me curious. Initially I thought maybe #doom but I know there's some #football game on the #amiga that's still a thing but I can't remember it. Also maybe #nethack (not technically multiplayer) or #hunt (maybe doesn't have much of a community?). #gaming
Twitch surprisingly runs really well in-browser on my S23. Nice that I can watch someone play #Nethack in real-time without even using an app. And watching in-browser (Firefox), there are no ads.
You know what would make #CavesOfQud really really awesome? Community bones files. Like #Nethack. Imagine finding the bones parasang of some other player... And wither surviving or running away from the thing that killed him.
Ma che divertente, quando inizi una partita a #nethack e dietro alla prima porta che apri c'è un mostricciattolo che ti spara addosso la rarissima bacchetta magica della morte 🤬
