I've seen discussion around several in-person only events lately, where the organisers justify it by saying they can't get the best quality of conversation online.
Well, you can't get any of my conversation at an event I can't get to.
An in-person event that you have to travel to excludes people with caring responsibilities, disabilities, and limited funds.
@christianp There is also the issue of the carbon footprint of in-person meetings.
I don't know much about other disciplines, but from my own experience it seems obvious that the carbon footprint of Internet travel (#ietf, #nanog, #ripe, #xnog, #icann, ...) is immense.
I must say I'm hugely impressed with the diversity on offer @ripencc this year!
The lineup is perfectly balanced: 3 men with beards and 3 without. Finally we can start to address the beard imbalance of the present board which (not including one woman) is tipped 5 to 1 in favour of men with beards against one clean-shaven.
The very first #RIPEMeeting took place on 22 May 1989 in Amsterdam, attended by 14 people. Thank you to everyone in the #RIPE community for coming together for the past 35 years to keep this weird and wonderful thing that is the Internet running! #35YearsOfRIPE
Sharing a train trip from Amsterdam to RIPE88?? Hear me out: weekend trip to Berlin in April, return, for 6 people, by Night train: 360€ = 60 per person!!! 17.4. - 22.4. I would go only one way, then continue to Krakow. Who's in?? https://www.europeansleeper.eu/discountreturnticket and then we still have to book a return trip... and we can "sell" the Berlin/A'dam ticket to someone else... maybe?? Brainstorm?? @shane_kerr@mir@vaurora#RIPE
I need a good new podcast. Preferably one that is web related, but really pretty open. I had a nice, maybe overly full one developing during football season, but now I am feeling the emptiness... Suggestions?
I had positive experiences with Local Hubs in "Computing within Limits", hackathons, Wikimedia, #CCC Congress everywhere... now looking forward to testing this out with #RIPE!
The #RIPE NCC 2023 member survey has been published
#Democracy is a funny thing. Living in France, and disenfranchised by #Brexit, I may not get to vote to keep Le Pen out, or even vote for the local council, but as a member of RIPE and Nominet, I do get to vote for who runs the Internet, and participate in policy-informing surveys like this one.
"A perceived rise in goverment influence, both democratic and authoritarian, and geopolitical tensions that threaten Internet neutrality are also seen as a challenge to Internet stability … comments indicated that threats from governments (very much including the EU) to control the Internet" will lead to "fragmentation due to differing regulations, censorship, and geopolitical tensions".
