Bike Shedding and Yak Shaving: The dynamic duo that might just trip you up on your filmmaking journey. In this post, we talk about what they are, and how indie filmmakers can steer clear of distractions to stay focused on their cinematic dreams.
#Haaretz reports, “Israel has responded to its “clear loss” to #Hamas on the digital battlefield by making its first-ever purchase of a technological system capable of conducting mass online influence campaigns, according to numerous sources with knowledge of the matter.
The system can, among other things, automatically create content tailored to specific audiences. The technology was purchased as part of a wider attempt by Israeli bodies, both civilian and military, to address what sources termed “Israel's public diplomacy failure” following the Hamas massacre on October 7 and subsequent war.
“A few weeks into the war, Israel set up a "hasbara forum" comprising government agencies, offices and ministries, as well as military, defense and intelligence bodies – including the #IDF, the #ShinBet security service and the National Security Council – alongside tech firms, civilians volunteer initiatives and even Jewish organizations, that meets weekly.
Officials from different bodies, including the Public Diplomacy Directorate and Diaspora Affairs Ministry, charged with countering antisemitism against world Jewry, held talks with different firms and tech providers active in various mass online campaigns. Assets are one thing, an intelligence source explains, but you also want a system for managing them.
“Mass influence systems can often get their operators in trouble, and their public exposure can severely damage their clients' credibility.”
“As a result, Israel decided to purchase an existing technology instead of risk developing one independently. A number of civilian tools and programs developed for business and political campaigns were procured: a system for mapping online audiences; a system capable of automatically creating websites, among other things, as well as content tailored to specific audiences; a system for monitoring social media and messaging platforms, and others. Thus, Israel hoped to launch campaigns that would advance Israel's core message and improve global perception.”
A route connecting #KualaLumpur and Bangkok will make it possible to link it to other regional #HSR lines to form larger networks that will reach Laos and China.
#Change doesn’t happen top-down, it happens person-to-person, through networks of trust, ”easily influenced people influencing other easily influenced people”
Intelligence agencies like the KGB have always known this. But previously only huge state actors were able to conduct #influence#operations on scale.
With #generative#ai, the cost of weaponised fake friendships if rapidly approaching zero. And #2024#election season, we should see the first instances of that.
This is a genuine request for input from the community.
A member of upper-middle management for a midsized internet technology company recently explicitly stated that they didn't want to install the company's management agent on their device. "I think for leadership, that sort of thing should be optional" was the quote.
This person is intelligent and capable, and is otherwise someone I would respect as a fellow member of the same circles and business.
This is so against axioms that I hold almost self-evident, that I realized I don't even have good arguments. I can endlessly find corners of the internet where this would be akin to "Pi is exactly 3!" at a Mathematics convention, but is there ever generally a time or company's infrastructure configuration where simply ignoring or allowing to be optional endpoint security wouldn't just be blatantly stupid?
Besides being aghast and expressing sharp chastisement, how does someone go about even beginning to describe why this cavalier attitude is so abhorrent?
Is there some situation where it's actually a kosher methodology or mindset?
I think I might just be so thrown off guard by the concept that I just can't think of even an obvious answer to start with here.
After over a decade of independent, getting-shit-done #operations work, I'm /finally/ in a place where I'm comfortable with what I enjoy; why I'm doing this; and with saying no to the "wrong" kind of gigs.
I'm not actively looking for client work right now, but if you want to Make Opsy Things Better for folks, give me a kick 😀
Good Monday morning, Fediverse! I'm looking for my next role, hoping to get #FediHired.
Right now I'm a principal engineer and team lead for certificate infrastructure at a major US company. My day-to-day work focuses on PKI infrastructure/operations, Windows, and Active Directory. I get to help developers understand both the Why and How of the best practices for using certificates, along with keeping the certificate infrastructure humming along.
Working with Information Security, we've implemented company-wide multi-factor authentication for ~30,000 people. I've designed and executed migrating from on-prem PKI (Microsoft ADCS) to Certificates-As-A-Service, which reduced our total operating costs by about half. The includes dropping our datacenter footprint from multiple physical devices down to a couple of VMs.
Outside of the technical responsibilities, I'm mentoring and training junior/new teammates to build their skills and their confidence. Feedback from the management of our development and applications teams is that I've reinvigorated relationships and made certificate discussions something folks look forward to. And while nobody enjoys an outage, both managers and fellow individual contributors have told me that my calm, confident, and methodical presence is critical to both morale and quick resolution.
My current position doesn't offer much in the way of Azure exposure, but in my previous role I built out a Windows Virtual Desktop (now Azure Virtual Desktop, AVD) ecosystem from scratch when the pandemic first began and we had to send everyone to work from home on super-short notice. Nobody missed a day of work for lack of technical resources.
What I want from my next role is either a similar technical lead/principal level infrastructure/operations IC position or moving into management of a similar team.
If you're looking for a technical leader (with or without management responsibilities) to help shape and maintain your Windows/Active Directory environment, someone who can build relationships across a large organization, let's chat. DM me for email or Signal.
Current residence is in Syracuse, NY, but I'm open to relocation.
"One bill — already approved by the [California State] Senate — would force about 5,300 #US corporations earning more than $1 billion and doing business in #California to annually report their global [greenhouse gas] #emissions that contribute to #ClimateChange.
Another bill that won Senate approval would require more than 10,000 companies with revenues exceeding $500 million to detail how climate change poses #FinancialRisks to their [worldwide] #operations."
📌 Industrial robots today are programmed to perform specific and repetitive tasks, which limits their versatility; to make them perform different actions, they need to be reprogrammed by a person.
📌 Incorporating #AI into industrial #robots could enable them to learn autonomously from their own actions and the environment; they would thus learn to perform diversified tasks and decide in real-time which task to carry out.
📌 Developing #AI-integrated #robots capable of adapting and learning is no small challenge, especially for complex and dynamic work environments; one of the critical aspects is that robots can cause significant damage, including harm to people, if not properly controlled.
For those in research or innovation spaces, (including open source),
What is your method for assigning tasks, of different priority and involvement levels.
How do you differentiate between presenting volunteer/open that have one set of quality standards, vs other quality standards for different tasks-roles-responsibilities?
The Rail Enforcement Division from Land Public Transport Agency (#APAD) carried out an #inspection of the LRT Kelana Jaya Line #track and corridor on 4 August 2023. The inspection, also joined by people from #RapidRail, inspected the track so that it is #safe for #train#operations.
This inspection series is to review the inspections that was carried out in July 2023, to ensure that the warnings issued had been rectified, so that the train can operate properly under the set safety standards.
If there was a tool to keep track of your sites, regardless of where they were hosted, telling you their status, perhaps a one-click-login feature, would you use it?

We were so grateful to take part in this year's Maintainer Month! It is thanks to wonderful people like @duane, Jessica Tegner, @filippo, and @aclairefication that made it possible. Additional thanks go to our sponsors who help us capture these unique perspectives on open source maintainership.
Setting up new structures is not enough. The structures set up also need to be audited regularly in order to maintain them and ensure they are running efficiently.
Sadly, many people forget. They fire a fire-and-forget missile that ends up hitting them in the neck.
