My grandmother passed right before my ML talk at #FOSDEM. I had amazing support from my team to go home and back out of my talks at #SOOCon24 if I wanted to. But, I know what my grandmother would have said— the show must go on.
Passion, better career advancement, sense of achievement and belonging, reduce reliance on monopolistic SW companies, open innovation in public sectors and universities
It was refreshing to talk about controversial topics in civil manner at #SOOCon24
Well, I'm home after a great couple of days at #StateOfOpenCon#SOOCon24, which has given me lots to think about. There were some great talks, some really interesting hallway track conversations, and nice to meet friends old and new.
First of all a huge thank you to the organisers - there were so many of you behind the scenes doing such great work to make the event a massive success. I've seen the effort that it can take to do a single track conference let alone 8 tracks(!!!) so it's a huge result, and I hope y'all are gonna have some well deserved rest!
I'd like to say in particular a bit thank you for the work that @andypiper has been doing in the lead up to the conference to support the speakers, being warm, super helpful and supportive, as well as seeing them busy over the conference helping ensure everything was going well
And a big thanks to @AmandaBrock for all her excellent work with OpenUK and State of Open Con 🙌
I'll definitely be making my way back next year 👀 And I'll be (re)watching talks as they pop up!
Massive thanks to our cohort of friendly, helpful and collaborative volunteers who made #SOOCon24 possible. Thanks for giving up your time to support the event 👏🏻
I’ve been thinking all day about the talk this morning at #soocon24 from Baroness Stowell, who’s chair of the Lords digital select committee. A little bit of it seemed rather party line, but the latter half was really quite inspiring in places. She talked about fairness as a central point of what should be government AI policy; whether that’s fairness to those who’ve had their copyrights violated by inhaling data for LLMs or to smaller players squeezed out by big tech. Reassuring to hear.
Good morning #SOOCon24! @ainali and I are ready to discuss all things public sector open source - come tell us about your project, or pick up a Standard for Public Code or Governance Game. See you soon! #StateOfOpenCon#PublicCode
Back in London for day two of State of Open Con 2024. Yesterday, I was volunteering on the event crew all morning, so didn’t attend any talks, but spent a while as a “welcome bot” on the door, and room usher. That meant I had plenty of opportunities for quick chats with friends and familiar faces. In the afternoon I attended a few interesting talks, which I will probably talk about on an upcoming @linuxmatters soon.
Today, talks the morning then I am volunteering in the afternoon 🥰 #soocon24
Sending a heartfelt thank you to our media sponsor @fosslife! 🎉 Your involvement in our event brings a whole new level of excitement and anticipation! Let's make it unforgettable together! #Stateofopencon24#SOOCon24
@watty62@openuk represents open technologies - software, hardware, data, AI. #OpenData is absolutely a part of the mission and the track at #SOOCon24 had some phenomenal content. It's also in the manifesto.
