bit of a rough night over here, Coraline had four small seizures in the night. She has had these before, but typically as isolated incidents when she was super riled up about another dog or something, not just while sleeping and never more than one. She already has a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow, since she had one of these seizures a few nights ago. think good thoughts please!

I just had a splendid idea, if I do say so myself.

How about if I take little mini breaks around the country over the coming year and visit various locations associated with famous books and authors.

I mean like I've just picked up wuthering heights so perhaps a trip to Yorkshire is in order. I'm sure the Brontë sisters home is still up there.

@CindySue @bookstodon stuff from the new shelf at my local public library:
currently reading The New Couple in 5B
(so far so good, I can see what's coming but in a fun way)

@CindySue @bookstodon hear hear! and I'm lucky enough to have both my local PL and the one I work in :)

Quite often on the Fediverse – more often on other social networks – I find people talking about how things were so much better years ago.

And I’m telling you this is a trap. Don’t fall for it. Yesteryear is not better than now, it just feels that way because it’s over.

Progress exists. It’s important that we all acknowledge how things are better. More importantly, you are alive – enjoy this moment.

Anneheathen,
@Anneheathen@glammr.us avatar

@atomicpoet this is so true. as John Hodgman says (paraphrase), nostalgia is a toxic impulse, the idea that we can return to the good old days that never existed

my master plan of using pruned branches from the fruit trees to create woven borders around the tree bases to protect from being near the lawnmower is working even better than I anticipated! I have been plotting this project for ages and am so thrilled

A woven short fence about 8 inches tall surrounds the base of a plum tree with lots of buds, a brick house and fence can be seen on the background

I just watched a short video of an American electrician talking about which part of an outlet is which via which part will shock you if you stick a screwdriver in it.

Firstly wtf

Secondly, you guys just have outlets that kids can electrocute themselves with by default?

@NickGates @minnfinn @Bridgemakes so true. another horror story from my childhood that somehow turned out fine: younger brother of a girl in my class tried to unplug a cable from the wall with his teeth and got shocked. he turned out okay tho!

Great job, people advertising an accessibility conference that will attract 200+ people and is in person only with no masks or other mitigations. Way to show us what your understanding of accessibility is up front, I guess

I can't decide if the first guy to tame a wolf was a badass or a psychopath.

I mean on the one hand it would be cool rolling up to the rest of the tribe with this apex predator that you made friends with and called dog.

In the other hand who looked at fucking wild wolf, the sort of thing that would have been eating humans if it got the chance, and said "I will make you a friend."

Anneheathen,
@Anneheathen@glammr.us avatar

@mikey @Bridgemakes all I can say is that our dog thinks the TV is another window. If a dog or horse appears on it, she goes to the window next to the TV to see if they are still walking out there. disappointed every time!

Ok, I’ve got a weird question to . The hardwood floors in our main living area needed to be refinished five years ago and we only moved in two years ago. We know they need to be completely refinished, but that’s not happening this year. What can I use to clean and protect my well-used floor? A few areas that had previous rugs are still slippery with polyurethane, all of the pathways have all the finish completely worn away, and the rest of the floor is in-between but definitely past its prime. It’s nice to walk on, but a dust mop snags often.
I feel like the answer is going to be an old brand of soap or some kind of citrus oil, but internet searches have turned to such shit.

Anneheathen,
@Anneheathen@glammr.us avatar

@mikey @donkeyherder I have used feed-n-wax on our hardwoods, in the spots where they have worn a lot, and there really isn’t much of any protection left on the surface. You definitely have to go back and wipe down any excess afterward, but it really helped the areas that were in the worst shape

@lunalein @bookstodon Finished The Terraformers by @annaleen the other day and I can’t remember the last time I was so sad to leave a world… parts of it are indeed dystopian, but building toward the possibility of something better is very obviously part of its ethos. Highly recommend.
