This Week's Sky at a Glance, August 18-27. Very useful Sky & Telescope observing guide by Alan MacRobert. https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/this-weeks-sky-at-a-glance-august-18-27/

Updated my site (https://tigeroakes.com) to use collections and it's such a significant difference. I was able to delete a ton of hacky code!

And some processed results! Neither have been post-processed after stacking. The first set, which shows an awesome clear sky, was done at my erroneously-low settings, and the second set was when the cloud came in but you can still see the stars are much more bright!

Another image like the previous, except with more sensitive settings. Unfortunately the cloud came in.

wokstation,

Here's a shot from the more sensitive exposure settings, with the levels slightly adjusted to make the fainter stars stand out a little more. Other than that, it's just as the camera captured it.

This was photographed with a picam2 noir, exposure 10sec and ISO 800.

The contrast between a single 'RAW' exposure of the Andromeda Galaxy and a stacked/tweaked pre-cropped result.

Processed version of the Andromeda Galaxy at right of centre. Considerable number of star dots too.

I managed to get a faint shot of the Milky Way last night from Long Island. I’m blown away at how many stars my camera can see that I can’t! I’m only just learning how to edit night sky photos, looking to pick up some tricks to make our galaxy pop! (28mm f1.8 15 sec)

Tomorrow will be the height of Venus retrograde. The Sun and Venus in Leo will conjunct in the same degree, merging their significations with one another. The creative expression of the self will take center stage. When thinking about this conjunction, it will be purely about the self and how we want to express ourselves to the world. What creative endeavors have you picked up (or more specifically, revisited) recently? How do you feel people see you when you express yourself? Is that in line with how you personally see yourself?

Venus is about relationships, and creative expression. Art and beauty come from Venus, whereas the Sun wants to be seen as its own individual self. Those two merging will be an explosion of creative realizations around how you attract people to you. Be unapologetically upfront, and be yourself! That is what this Venus retrograde is teaching us.

Elentári: A z∼3.3 Proto-Supercluster in COSMOS

https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.15113

So named due to the large number of new stars formed in such protoclusters. Varda Elentári is a character imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien, appearing in The Silmarillion.

Currently in the process of migrating a pretty big multi-language site to . So far I've got page generation with localised slugs done and almost ported over the default layout component. 💪

Kind of crazy to go back to code from three, four years ago and reevaluate it. 🤣 At least my past self did an okay job keeping things clean and understandable for my now self. 👌
