Eclipse-Mania has many people wanting to know more about Space. This book could inspire a future James Webb or Edwin Hubble! Turn off glowing screens & marvel at the wonders of the universe... before light pollution and satellite clutter completely spoil the view.
I'm reading The Shadow of Perseus by Claire Heywood (mentioned in our #Andromeda episodes: https://starrytimepodcast.com/episodes) & it made me so mad, I just moved our Perseus episode down on the scheduled list (we were supposed to do it after we finish Orion, but I can't even look at Perseus rn)
In our most recent #podcast episode we talked about Beta Orionis (Rigel), as well as Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse), Gamma Orionis (Bellatrix) and Kappa Orionis (Saiph)... but here is a pic & more info on Delta Orionis (Mintaka)!
Speaking of M13 (which I shoehorned into the Gold Star segment of our #astronomy episode despite it not winning), here is a graphic representation the Arecibo message!
Timelapse of the stars last night while we waited to see if we could see any meteors. The little Wyze camera does pretty good seeing the brighter stars.
I love being able to see Jupiter so clearly in the sky. If you're not sure where it is, look for a big orange-y star in the sky. At night it's in the Eastern sky. By morning it's closer to the horizon and in the Western sky. Also great to see Orion out. #Constellations#Stargazing
Another wand from last night's shift at the woodburner! This one has renditions of the Big and Little Dipper (not bad if I do say so myself). The runes are meant to say "True North," which is what the Dippers can help to find.
Polaris, the current North Star, can be found in the Little Dipper's handle.
Many of the moons of #Jupiter are named after mortal women Jupiter/Zeus "seduced" and his wife, Juno/Hera, somehow killed. Semele (covered in our most recently #podcast episode) is no exception... as of the early 2000s.
Thyone, another name of Semele, is a retrograde irregular moon that was discovered in 2001 (and named in 2003)
Sharing some of my favorite #Hubble images from the #NASA archives to commemorate the space telescope’s 33rd anniversary. We should take a moment to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the universe.
Information about the images + Hubble facts, a thread: 1/x
This is #NGC2525, a captivating galaxy located in the constellation of #Puppis, nearly 70 million light-years from Earth. It is notable for being home to a supermassive black hole. It is being observed by the #HubbleSpaceTelescope to measure the universe's expansion rate.
What is this #podcast about?
All things #constellations! Each month we explore the #astronomy and #myths of one of the #IAU constellations. We talk about cool #space stuff (with a bias toward #BlackHoles & #exoplanets) as well as analyzing & retelling the myths of the night sky (a segment we like to call ret-con…stellations)
