Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is doing a study on the impact from covid on people's health.

They need folk who have had and have NOT had covid for a survey.

"COVID-19 has infected more than 600 million people and has resulted in greater than 6 million deaths globally. Research scientists from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health want to better understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people’s health.

We are interested in hearing from people who have experienced COVID-19 illness and those who have not. Everyone’s experience is important for us to understand."

Managed to get to my spot just as the last of the was fading. Only pic I got that was bright. The red slowly darkened until it was gone.

There was no wind and a lot of bird chatter. Peaceful night to sit out in the desert.

Looking out over the water of South Nutgrass with dark clumps of reeds dotting the lake. A dull purple, red, pink, and green glow fills the lower half of the sky, surrounded by the black star spotted night. The smooth water reflects the faint red glow and the stars.

Stayed out far past my bedtime and got some truly beautiful pictures of a sky I have never seen before.

To my eyes, this was just a streaky blue with the faintest trace of pink. But the streaks were crystal clear!

Seen in Northern Nevada at the N39 latitude.

A pink and pale green sky with vertical streaks of brighter pink and white and reflecting in a rippled lake. Dark clumps of reeds dot the glowing water.

As I was driving around Carson Lake, I spotted a Loggerhead Shrike giving a solo performance. So I stopped for awhile to watch them sing and snapped a few pictures.

The look that I got! "No photography during the concert!"

A small grey and white bird with black wing tips and a long black tail is perched on a bare branch. Its head is turned to look directly into the camera, the black face mask arched lines giving it a fierce look. Small black eyes can be seen amid the black feathers on either side of a closed beak.

A large brown owl perches in a tree, it's brown patterned body perfect for blending in against the bark of a tree (though not so much against the dull blue grey of early twilight). Though the body is facing away from the camera, showing the large wings and full tail, the head is turned completely around and staring into the camera. It's wide yellow eyes set back in the large oval face with the narrow black beak. The twin feathered "horns" are blowing in the breeze, the only part of the owl that is moving.
A Great Blue Heron appears small as it stands on the top crossbar of a corral entry. The bird's long thin legs are spread wide to support the large grey body. Its long neck is curved into an S with the bright yellow bill pointed off to the left.
A small brown and white speckled bird moves through the shallow water of a flooded grass pasture. Yellow legs come down from a white underbelly. Its wings have dark brown patterns while it's light brown head surrounds a gleaming black eye ringed in white. A long narrow beak extends straight out and glisten in the setting sun light.

Dad loaned me his fat tire step through ebike to try puttering around and see if it's something I'd really use vs sit in the garage as a "nice idea but too lazy to use it"

My goal is to have something so I can park somewhere out at Stillwater and then unload whatever that will allow me to get around the refuge quietly without scaring the birds and without having to do the manual labor myself. I kinda like the idea of a sit down scooter, but trying this as it's made for going off road.

First test done tonight, went to go get my mail and some groceries.

@elaterite The mobile bird blind is awesome, but doesn't help much when the noise from the truck sends them flying long before I get within camera range.

You're right, I might be trading one scary thing for another, but curious how close I can get before they recognize me as a human.

Didn't notice any difference in bird song (a couple Bewick's Wrens were holding a concert) but the temp did drop from a calm 73° to a breezy 60°.

This is too pretty to keep in a reply. Was standing by this lovely pink blossom tree that smelled simply divine and caught movement above me. A male house finch was perched near the top singing. Got a little video and a photo before he flew off.

A red headed house finch perches amid the pink blossoms under a clear blue sky and sings a few notes before flying away.

Driving around Carson yesterday and passed by a group of trees. Just happened to look up and spotted some odd "bark", that moved.

Managed to get the reaction when it was startled by some geese flying by and then caught sight of me pointing a camera at it.

The great horned owl has turned slightly to the right, the sideview of its head now visible, the black line along the edge of the white face surrounds a closed eye. The rest of its body is still turned away, the brown and grey feathers blending in nearly perfectly with the rest of the cottonwood tree bark that fills the background.
The great horned owl spotted the human and whipped it's head around fully, looking down at the visitor. One golden eye is clearly visible while the other is hidden partially by the shadow of a nearby branch. It's pale face is outlined with a black stripe, the two feathery "horns" rising up above it's round head, and the grey and brown back blending into the thick cottonwood tree trunk covered in rough bark.

I have used this so far for:

  3. Bacon smoke (on Saturdays, LOL)
  4. General improvement of AQI
  5. Pet related allergies (hay and dander)
  6. Ragweed/pollen heavy days
  7. Dust from Santa Ana winds
  8. Dust from construction/remodeling
  9. Paint fumes (only partially useful, doesn't absorb gases, but helps somewhat) -- plus it sucks all the dust from the air, so it doesn't stick to your paint

(probably other uses, too...)

@ai6yr Still have mine from the annular that I picked up at the Reno planetarium. Before that event, Home Depot had regular looking "sunglasses" that were solar filters and Best Buy had nifty binoculars and telescopes with solar filters included.

Should see if those are back in stock...

It's such a beautiful weekend, popped out once again to Stillwater NWR to see what birds have made it this far on their spring migration.

A large Bald Eagle perches on a thick branch covered in rough bark, gripping tightly with massive yellow talons. The bird's tell-tale black body and white head and tail are easily visible amid the winter bare branches. It's powerful yellow beak is open in a wide yawn.
An absolutely gorgeous non-breeding Ruddy Duck swims across a rippled blue lake, it's brown and tan feathers broken only by the large white patch on its cheek and black cap that blends into the black bill. The tall brown tail is held upward. The duck is glistening due to the water droplets clinging to its feathers.
A Say's Phoebe perches on a bent reed, it's beak full of small twigs and other nesting material. The small bird with a brown back and light yellow chest stands on thin black legs as it's head is tipped slightly to look up at the human that is in the way. One glistening black eye seems to say "Please leave." I did.

While hanging out at my Dad's, spotted this downy woodpecker hanging out at the suet. I love the almost "Excuse me?!" pose the woodpecker held when a house sparrow decided to land there too.
