Engineers at the #SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have completed work on the Legacy Survey of #Space and Time camera. The device is the world's largest digital camera and will be the centerpiece of a 10-year mission to map the night sky from the Vera C. Rubin #Observatory in #Chile.

By measuring microwave polarization, or how these energy waves wiggle in particular directions, the instrument, located in the #Andes mountains of northern #Chile, is probing the history and physics of the universe — from the very first moments to when #galaxies, stars, and planets formed.
Located on the vast plain known as the Pampa Amarilla (yellow prairie) in western Argentina, this hybrid detector employs independent methods to detect and study the highest-energy cosmic rays.
Its 1,660 water surface detector tanks, separated from each of its neighbors by 1.5 kilometers, cover about 3,000 km2 of the Pampa.

Starting in 2025 the #VeraCRubin#observatory will increase the number of known objects circling the sun by roughly tenfold, spotting new #comets, exotic #asteroids from other stars, and perhaps even the elusive #PlanetNine.
