#Earthworms enhance silicate rock weathering, which is a potential CO₂ removal (#CDR) technique. With global worming, this effect could become significant.

Just as I was reading the chapter on earthworms in "Wilding" by Isabella Tree, I stumble upon this:

"Earthworms contribute significantly to global food production", by Fonte et al. 2023 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-41286-7

There's a news piece about it here: https://phys.org/news/2023-09-earthworms-contribute-global-grain-production.html

Anybody who's touched soil with their bare hands could have told you that without earthworms the soil is no good. That the absence of earthworms is a telltale of poisoned or poor soil quality.

But I'm glad the contribution of earthworms to agriculture has been estimated. Imagine inventing a new method to increase crop yield by 6.5% to 10%: you'd be deemed a hero. For earthworms that's just their way of life.

Larger and larger groups of what are essentially encroaching on protected land have invaded the forest and are cutting down trees and pulling up plants at a rapid rate. Whole patches of the tree-dense area are now bare.

The poachers destroy the flora in order to plug electrodes into the ground and shock the soil with electricity that forces the to rise out of the earth for easy capture.

@msquebanh Do you have any pointers on how to find more info about these worms? Invasive amynthas earthworms are wreaking havoc on North American soil and forests and nobody seems to know anything about these worms' native habitat.

Absolute stress in the . That's what you get when you talk to nature!
A delegation of angry delivers a petition. It has to stop that my dog Bilbo breads their buddies in sand, dries them and abuses them as chewing gum. Even if he is one of the podcast stars.
They demand as reparation that I not only interview one creature but invite them to a panel discussion in the next edition! I was actually going to invite shrimp. Gardening animals ...

gif. The culprit doesn't care: my dog Bilbo sits on the couch with his plush duck and licks his lips.
