Open source UX is often criticised. Some of it is justified, but what can we do about it? @scottjenson 's talk at this year's FOSS Backstage explored which repos are doing UX well and what we can learn from them.

just confirms that "permissive" licenses should be understood as "permission to exploit".

A is a red flag (unless perhaps to a NGO/charity).

Look for projects that chose strong Free, Libre, Open Source protections - such as the / / and a Developer-Certificate-of-Origin () rather than setting yourself up.

... do we want to take a bet on how long it takes for to get forked and their business to fold anyway, having caused the damage?

@der_mit_ph AWS or one of the megascalers doing this (or offering a "pay for ops only" business) is an interesting challenge.
Peer Heinlein's "cuckoo" talk from is somewhat applicable here.
But also, if the projects were set up with AGPL (or if we worked towards something even more protective) rather than exploitation enablement licenses such as BSD/MIT/Apache because that's what the single vendor aimed for ...

Do you work in open source? Do you think it has a funding problem? If so, please take my 10 minute survey at https://opensource.study. By participating, you can help provide an understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t in the ecosystem.

This survey is part of a research project at ASU and is completely voluntary. If you have any questions about participation, please reach out to me here.

@ardouglass I'm sure you've seen this but just because it'd be a shame if you hadn't - https://fossfunding.com/ (there was a talk by Shane about this project at recently, which should be online by now as well).

My talk just went live! I was so excited to present in person this year, I had so much more energy in front of a life audience and the questions in the hallway afterward were excellent.

Everything I'm doing with and is meant to be a conversation so if you have any questions, please let me know.

Having just talked about various EU area's use of MS software at in Berlin last week, I'm really curious how big a change this is.

In particular, is this a fundamental GDPR issue, or mostly one in how this specific EU Commission setup their data collection policies?

Leaving Berlin after a very satisfying conference. SO MUCH better to go to a conference in person! I've really missed this. Much of the important and interesting stuff was talking to people outside of talks!

I totally appreciate the value of remote conferences: how they equalize access and massively reduce carbon footprint.

However, they don't accomplish 20% of what happens in person...
