Stupid econ question:

So it looks like a lot of remaining inflation is rent. In that case, wouldn't you want to lower rates to increase home-building and home-ownership in order to reduce rent pricing?

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith the entire neighborhoods being built as rental properties is probably the primary challenge to this.

“Level-Setting Heading Levels”
https://adrianroselli.com/2024/05/level-setting-heading-levels.html

TL;DR: Avoid setting heading levels greater than six (6). This applies whether using aria-level or the proposed headingstart HTML attribute. Use HTML <h#> elements whenever possible.

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian the best advice I ever got from a technical writing teacher was that more than a few heading levels probably warranted splitting something into multiple documents instead.

Six feels arbitrary, but forcing people to rethink their information architecture might be a blessing in disguise.

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian I do really like the idea of not worrying as much about heading levels when pulling in components and content. Maybe it’s an opportunity for some accessibility testing tools to warn about dangerously deep heading levels.

I’ve gotten back into crosswords after a few decades and one change that makes me rather cross (wordplay fully intended) is clues no longer indicate the number of words in the answer, let alone the letter count of the word(s) in the clue.

Maybe you didn’t grow up with crosswords that did that, but I did, and it was better that way. old_man_yells_at_cloud.jpg

@zachleat hey Zach, I'm doing a study on open source funding through Arizona State University's Public Interest Technology program. I was hoping you could take about 10 minutes to fill out our survey. If you do, you can help provide an understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t in the ecosystem.

@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

Do you work in open source? Do you think it has a funding problem? If so, please take my 10 minute survey at https://opensource.study. By participating, you can help provide an understanding of what has worked and what hasn’t in the ecosystem.

This survey is part of a research project at ASU and is completely voluntary. If you have any questions about participation, please reach out to me here.

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb I agree, but sometimes you design an academic survey and then it goes through several months of revisions with input from an ethics board that won’t give final approval until you remove things like a minor punctuation mistake. And then your only option is to release it to the wild and hope for the best.

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb if you have any resources or things you’ve found helpful in the past regarding funding, I’m glad to check them out. I’m taking a mixed methods approach, so the survey is mostly to gather some hard data to compare with qualitative info and see how well that info is reflected in the numbers.

Found a new use for ChatGPT: ancient code spelunking. I was working on the scale for my minute-by-minute rain graph and I remembered that I'd solved this in Check the Weather. Dug around in its ObjC source code and found the section responsible (which git tells me was written in April 2013).

It involved a complicated formula I didn't recognize or understand. So I asked ChatGPT what it meant and it did a surprisingly good job of giving me a starting point to now go and research again.

A response from Chat GPT it summarizes the formula as relating to radar reflectivity and using a logarithmic scale. Full Text: Me: does this formula look familiar "float dbz = 10 * log10(200

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith I’ve already heard “I don’t need to document my code now that we have LLMs” and it’s frustrating. Wouldn’t current you have been happier if past you had simply left a comment saying what the formula was and where you found it or how you came up with it?

Hey bakers, explain.

I'm a reasonably competent baker. I make brioches, babkas, other fancy stuff. I have never once had a recipe that gave a mass measure of flour for which I didn't have to up the flour 10-20% or more (occasionally MUCH more) to get the desired texture. I'm currently fixing a donut recipe that says it wants 600g flour, but comes out as glop without adding ~100-150g more. The writer says the dough should be tacky.

Am I crazy?

ardouglass,
@ardouglass@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith humidity levels in your flour storage maybe? I don’t think that would account for all of it though.
