Kagi just launched their "Search Stats" dashboard. The "Domain insights" is pretty interesting, it shows which domains are most often lowered or raised by users.

fuck it I’m paying for .
I’ll see at the end of the month (or sooner) if I’ll regret that decision…
Paying 5€/month just to search is craaaazy but it’s been a pleasure to use it

[EDIT]
Already pissed off by the price 3h in :meow_ok_fine:

I’ve been playing with Kagi search, which is a paid service. WTF, right. That said, it has some pretty darn nice features. A big one is that you can trivially raise or lower domains in the search results. Don’t want to see Pinterest? Bye, Felicia.

I’m not sure that it’s worth paying for yet, but that’s not nothing. https://kagi.com/stats?stat=leaderboard

@tek Downside to : apparently the devs have a stink of ❄️🍑 about them if you go digging on their support forum 😩

/For now/ I am sighing and filing it under TNSTAECUC, and/or the fact that just about anyone going “I'm gonna make my own search engine!!" is somewhat more likely than average to be a speech maximalist of some kind.

But, FYI.

Friday poll for no good reason: what is your favourite search engine in Vivaldi and why? :vivaldi_red:

I can't seem to stick to just one, so I keep switching using nicknames in the address field. But maybe one of you will convince me! 👀

If you would consider paying for ad and tracking free searches, https://kagi.com is great. I've tried Google, DDG and Neeva - but has the best results as well!

Mac users: what are you all using for ad blocking? Shocking confession: I haven’t really used one since SetApp got rid of AdGuard last year for its supposed Russian connections. As I recall, the software they offered in its place, AdLock, demanded a level of permissions that I wasn’t comfortable with. But man, I’m sick of the ads. I’ve tried subscribing to rules in LittleSnitch, but they end up blocking so many links I keep ending up turning it off and forgetting to turn it on again.

eARCwelder,
@eARCwelder@mastodon.social avatar

@misc I’m in a similar boat. I haven’t used one in a while and just haven’t gotten back to it. Maybe switching to for search inadvertently solved a lot of my ad issues because now I never see any search ads. Most of my time on my Mac is also now within non-Safari apps 🤷 . But if you find one that works out let me know.

Thoughts on Kagi (https://kagi.com) from a perspective? (also just general thoughts)

Currently other than the fact that it can't be a default search engine in iOS without extensions it seems pretty good (especially with personal ranking of websites)

As a fan of Kagi Search, I gave Kagi's Orion Browser a try. It's built on Safari's tech, but the ideology is closer to Firefox. Supporting BOTH Chrome and Firefox extensions is a huge win.

My initial impressions of the "public beta" is that it still has a lot of work. Few extensions fully work, ie 1Password doesn't work at all. DOM performance was dramatically worse than Chrome (82 vs 133 on speeDOMeter). Hopefully it continues to improve, but it has a long path ahead.

addie,

@Amirography thanks for sharing this! I tried and it’s honestly really good. I’m just still a bit questioning if I want to pay for a search engine or not. But I have had a much better and healthier Internet experience since I switched so maybe.

Good article!

Got myself a feedbin subscription and a kagi one. While completely substituting YouTube with newpipe and closed my twitter and reddit account. Give me a better source of cute short animal videos than instagram and I will be free of "shitty web".

For the email, I would suggest you @protonmail (they also have other interesting apps). I started using the mail, then I changed my VPN, later my calendar, and now I'm using their password manager.

> I would like to know your impressions about #Kagi. My concern is the limited number of searches I can do every month. For sure I would surpass it.

I have also deleted my Reddit account. About Twitter, it's just about time, I never use it that frequently, I'm just waiting until they deactivate and delete it for me. I just don't want to sign in there.

Post- update: I have the feeling that the search results at are slowly getting better. What I am missing at the moment? It would be great if you didn't have to choose either Germany OR International for "Region", but could select several individually weighted regions.

Is anyone here using as their daily driver search engine? If so, what do you prefer about it compared to e.g. DuckDuckGo? Are the results genuinely better? If so, how? If not, do you just feel safer paying for a product?

Using or interested in ?
I just discovered you can define any number of custom search queries called "bangs" which will instantly redirect your search to that source.
Now, if I write !i dark matter [enter], I immediately jump to the inspires search :D!

To set them up, go to the search you want to implement search for "test" and copy the URL search result into the custom bang URL, and replace "test" with %s in the URL

I have to say, in my brief period experimenting with / as an alternative to Google, it's held up much better than I'd expected.

In this instance, although NONE of these search engines have actually found what I'm looking for, I muuuch prefer what Kagi returns than what Google or Bing return. I was trying to download the installer image for SCALE but the download via the browser kept failing even in when using a download manager so I figured it was torrent time.

Tried a few searches, "TrueNas Scale Torrent," then "TrueNas Scale ISO Magnet Link" which brought up results from LinuxTracker, but not the current version which I had seen when I was on the download page earlier. Time to be a little more specific:
"TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2.iso magnet"

When you get this specific:

  • Google kinda gives up, the top link might have what you're looking for, but it doesn't give you any page content in the blurb. You'll have to open the link to find out. That's all it gives you.
  • Bing actually does a good job at highlighting the version number located within pages and forums. Dare I say it, better than Google's results here.
  • Kagi gives you a link straight to the download repository with 'Today' clearly marked and although Bing's highlighting of forums posts is useful, Kagi is technically being more relevant to my query by showing LinuxTracker and DistroWatch directly afterward.

You could argue that Google's results make it clear that what you're searching for doesn't exist, but it's also just as easy to assume that Google didn't like my specific wording and that I just need to keep searching. But in the case of Kagi, the results give me a better picture of what's going on.

Since it couldn't find results for the whole query, I get:

  • An immediate understanding that what I'm looking for has just been released.
  • Results for the version/file I'm looking for but in the wrong format.
  • Results that match the general query but for an older version.
  • Again, all dated. It's clear that 'Today' was when the version I was searching for was published, then the torrent links are from April.

tl;dr The layout of Kagi's personally gives me a better gauge of why I'm not finding desired results.

Google search results for "TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2.iso magnet" A generic link to 'Download TrueNAS SCALE' with no indication of when the link was published. Below, a bunch of 'People also ask' dropdown questions about TrueNAS in general. Nothing to do with the query. That's it.
Bing search results for "TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2.iso magnet" Top two results show TrueNAS download links for the current version, not in the right format and it's ambiguous as to when they were published. Then there's some forum posts talking about the release. Again, no date information - but the version number is at least highlighted as something that's mentioned on the pages.

One of the neat things about is that it cordones off forums and listicles as their own categories, greatly improving scannability. Products are also listed based on review scores. It can do all this because it has no ads. Here’s “Mac accessories” in Kagi… 1/

My new strategy to deal with clickbaity / drama YouTube videos is to just drop the link into the Universal summarizer (https://kagi.com/summarizer/index.html) and read the one-paragraph summary.

„15 things you MUST DO with your new XYZ“ - summarize - „yeah, it’s basically just ‚this is how you change your wallpaper‘. Pass.“

„We just got some terrible news about starfield“ - summarize - „there are only four characters you can romance.“

Great way to screen for actually relevant information in between the clickbait, without giving the video advertising money and views. Even made myself an iOS shortcut for the share sheet to get the video summarized directly from the YouTube app (also works for any other URL). https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/99308c37b38749e59590db6a2eeb96fd

This is the kind of that I‘m really getting value from.

Finally ran through all 100 of my free searches at Kagi.com, so now I'm subscribed.

Search without ads or stalking AFAIK, that's worth $5 US/mo, I think.

I'll have to figure out how to make use of this from my phone for the rare times I do web stuff from there.
