I don't think I ever saw those little half-millimeter black-legged nymph #ticks until a year or two ago. I've had two on me already this year. My neighbor had #Lyme last year and I don't like this at all.
Am I just noticing them for the first time? Or is their range newly expanding into #Ohio?

Our most dangerous wildlife is back in numbers: ticks.
Just found one on my leg. Probably picked up on yesterday's walk in the woods. It's a tiny nymph and while I spotted two others these are easy to miss.
The risk is the disease they're carrying. In our region (northern Europe, Denmark) primarily Lyme disease, transferred via the bite.
Anyway. #PSA: check for ticks and take them off properly. And the week after check for the telltale Lyme rash, an expanding red circle ANYWHERE on your body.
And attached a photo (own work, unfortunately) of what a #Lyme / #Borrelia infection looks like. Days to weeks after an infection (#tick bite) this circle can appear anywhere on the body (thus not only where the tickhole was). It will fade out in a day or two but that means the infection is in your body: go to your doctor and get antibiotics!
Someone mentioned #TBE as well. This is now endemic in many european regions. And there's a vaccin! Worth looking into.
(US) Solve ME/CFS Initiative has created an automated tool (meant for folks in the USA) https://p2a.co/tE8DZk8 that will contact your Member of Congress & ask them to support a new "home" for "Infection-Associated Chronic Conditions and Illnesses" (IACCIs).
We have a fully funded (3 year) #PhD position available in #disease ecology at the University of Oslo, Norway. The topic is #Lyme disease with focus on modeling ecological interactions and processes influencing the disease dynamics.
Deadline February 29th (master students can also apply if they complete the degree before June 30).
Quote from an interview with Dr. Asad Khan, talking about Long Covid:
"We worship exercise, and exercise is good for most people, but when you have a post viral illness, it is the worst thing you can do ... and this is not really well known.
So there are other illnesses for example like M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis), Long Covid, and Lyme disease, for example, where if you make people exercise they only get worse."
A new center at the Yale School of Medicine is aiming to address post-acute infection syndromes including Long COVID, chronic fatigue syndrome [ME/CFS] and chronic Lyme disease.
Founded by immunology professor Akiko Iwasaki, the new Center for Infection & Immunity, or CII, was established on Aug. 18.
The Center’s faculty told the News they also hope to cultivate a “patient-partner model” that includes patients’ real-time feedback and symptoms…
And, to end on a high note, I just read that Ren’s fundraiser for his treatment exceeded its goal and, thanks to the success of his music, he was able to close it a few days ago.
Little #PSA for all you #GenX. Getting vaccinated against #shingles is a very good idea. Like many, many things in life, I don't need to find out about shingles the hard way. I especially don't need to experience the potential for nerve damage and phantom pain afterwards. I've had #Lyme, (twice!) that was lesson enough TYVF'nM.
All that said: when you schedule that second shot, you better not have anything important on the calendar...
#Tick bites 3.5 weeks ago, one of which was on for 24 hours. No EM rash, but a persistent small one. Finally went to dr on Saturday to start antibiotics just in case. Overwhelmingly fatigued and a little cloudy-headed the last few days. Confirmation bias, allergies, or #Lyme symptom? Either way, not a fab way to feel, starting the week. #SoTired#fatigue#JustWantToSleep
Open Medicine Foundation has a new registry to help researchers find participants for infection-associated disease research. Goal is 100,000 signups—seeking healthy controls as well as patients!
Super quick and you can indicate what you’re open to (studies from home vs anywhere, etc.)
Recruitment often really delays research—so grateful to everyone willing to help out 💛
