It's only a dumb rumor, but if this goes down we might as well turn off the lights on #gaming as we know it. Especially all the #Linux and #Proton goodness that #Valve has pushed forward.

Rumour claims Microsoft is preparing a $16B offer to acquire Valve | KitGuru

tallawk,
@tallawk@mastodon.world avatar

@WagesOf
Why would they drop one single penny on continuing development of Proton or anything associated with it?
Have you noticed that they're laying off a "few" people employed by their purchased properties lately?
You can install Linux inside Windows because MS will still make money when you deploy servers on their cloud equipment. The Linux / Proton stack that runs the Steam deck, and the rounding-error percentage of desktops running Linux, would get the axe. It's a nuisance to them.

tallawk,
@tallawk@mastodon.world avatar

@crabbypup
Agreed. Without the past decade of Linux and Wine/Proton investment by Valve, Valve would have been at the mercy of Microsoft and would probably already be owned. I know Linux desktop and Deck doesn't add up to much, but the threat posed by a full game-ready software stack has got to keep MS awake at night.
It's worth remembering that the PlayStation is basically a BSD kernel gaming box. Valve can do the same if the winds change.

tallawk,
@tallawk@mastodon.world avatar

@WagesOf
MS can make the windows kernel and custom UI for a handheld any time they want. They don't want to now, because they want to sell the Xbox, with its accompanying DRM and odious licensing.
If they bought Steam, all Linux and Proton investment is cut. Maybe they will come out with a handheld Xbox (with the DRM/licensing joys), maybe not.
Probably they burn the entire thing down and tell us to buy Xbox Handheld or go read books.

I like books.

Speaking of --a cautionary tale:
Wife brings home the Thing. Puts it on the kitchen table.
Later, the Cat gets bored and jumps on the table. Finds the Thing (amongst other things) and does what cats do: knocks the Thing off the table.
The , of course, is waiting. They work together at times like this. She picks up the Thing and retreats to the couch. Gnaws the box open. Gnaws what's inside apart. Spills the stuff inside the Thing all over...

tallawk,
@tallawk@mastodon.world avatar

... And eats two and a half bits.
The Thing?
A fresh bottle of . Naproxen sodium.
. Enough to wreck a 's stomach, kidneys, and nervous system. Just like that.
I find the mess. Know that the day has gone horribly sideways. We count the pills left. Desperately search for the missing two plus. No good.
She's at the vet hospital now, since yesterday. Drugs to protect her stomach. Activated charcoal to soak up as much of the Aleve as possible. She seems okay so far.

@tallawk@mastodon.world avatar

I am hoping we got her in time. I hope she won't suffer any permanent effects.
Watch out for your stuff everyone! Keep your safe!

Crawl are from Sweden and have a new album coming called 'Altar of Disgust'. This is a song from it called "Knives" and it's pretty fantastic. Crunchy and ferocious.

Nice.
My cellphone had trouble rendering the audio. By weird coincidence I had an empty coffee can on my desk. I stuck the phone halfway into the can and it really brought the vocals out. It's an interesting experiment.

I've been a huge Foo Fighters fan since early on (I was a big Nirvana fan in the 90s too). I was psyched to get to see Foo in 1996 (edit: originally said 1995) at UMBC (a college!) right after the first album, and then again a couple years later, when they were at a big arena show.

Yesterday I went through and made a fully chronological playlist of ALL my favorite Foo songs-- 49 of them on this list. Even covers and b-sides in here - might be something you haven't heard yet! Dave is a great songwriter. No ballads or anything too light, ALL (mostly) heavier ones here.

@jake4480 Their whole song collection is amazing. I can't think of a single song that I don't enjoy hearing by them. And I can't even say that about Zeppelin, whom I hold in the highest regard.

I have this recurring fantasy of what would happen if, say, you dropped a modern smartphone (let's include an SD card and a bunch of installed apps that don't need network connectivity) onto a table in a lab at Bell Labs circa say 1940. Be nice and provide a usb wall power plug too so they can keep it going. I wonder how far they'd get and how badly the timeline would be disrupted (or not).
