So I was made aware of a thread on reddit where it’s brought up that folks don’t understand the relationship between openSUSE MicroOS, openSUSE Aeon, and openSUSE Kalpa. This blog post will attempt to clear up some misunderstandings and misconceptions about the relationship between the three “Distributions”.
I still have ArchLinux installed but it's been almost a month since I also started to daily drive OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and… It's really nice? It's a really cool rolling release and I'm definitely enjoying it :blob_cat:
The only thing that saddened me in the first place is the lack of real "AUR" equivalent but since I recently discovered Distrobox it's not a matter anymore I can just install whatever the hell I want from any (supported) distro, so… What's the problem then? (And it's not like Flatpak wasn't a thing either)
@breadly at some point in the future, I really want to use an immutable distro like #VanillaOs or #MicroOs and use distro box to access everything I want or need if it's not a flatpak :3
Did another Mac thing! After a false start last night, #OpenSuse#MicroOS is now up and running. And it's blummin' fast for an old girl.
Best part is, it turns out the fastest processor this Mac can take is like £15-20 on eBay. That plus a bit of extra RAM will make this into a tidy little performer. (Not a Performa, sadly.) (Also not that little.)

So I recently ran across this post and thread by @vwbusguy, and I would like to try to address some of the questions/misconceptions/etc that come up in the thread.
If you have questions, please, ask. What we do with #Kalpa isn't identical to what #Fedora does with their #AtomicDesktops, but many of the concepts for the end user are going to be similar/the same.
This part, I actually didn't know, as I'm a relative latecomer as a developer to this space (After Richard bolted #GNOME on top of #MicroOS), and wasn't particularly involved in the #Fedora world at all, so I haven't the foggiest what the early development of #AtomicDesktop looked like.
In a surprise twist, our #fosdem2024 BoF session "Special Purpose Operating Systems: The Next Step in OS Evolution or One-Trick Ponies?" was greenlit this morning!

Not surprising, MicroOS, did not fair well in openSUSE's user case survey.
So much, so they felt the need to add a spin and clarify regardless, they're going to move forward.
Look... An immutable distro is not a bad thing. I'm using one right for home and work, use. I was one of those people who selected "both" as an option.
But no one wants it forced down their throat and the way openSUSE has been going about it, ignoring their user base, is an issue.
Sadly, openSUSE MicroOS is a "no go" with the Dell Precision T3610 too.
Same issue with Fedora SilverBlue.
The USB boots, I pick between install or boot from disk (I picked install), I watch it start to load up, and then the display cuts out. —I cannot install that which I cannot see.
1️⃣ nmcli connection import type wireguard file 'nombre-del-archivo'
2️⃣ nmcli connection up 'nombre-de-la-conexión'
3️⃣ nmcli (para comprobar si se registró)

@passthejoe yeah, fair. My build machine runs #openSUSE Aeon (née #microOS#desktop) since I sometimes want to use it interactively as a gaming machine, and.. it's been reasonable to update (I don't update it that often).
I have not tried #EndlessOS, but that's precisely an immutable distro based on a stable base - it's more end user oriented, but pretty sure you can install whatever you want on top, especially Distrobox. Worth a spin?
When #openSUSE#MicroOS & #distrobox teamed up, even containers couldn't contain their excitement 🤪. Find out what all the excitement is about at get.opensuse.org
I can't decide between #nixos or #opensuse#microOS for my Intel NUC server. I only host containers running #podman really , like #HomeAssistant and #Nextcloud . I'm still learning about both OS's really and I know both come with a learning curve, one steeper than the other. But I really can't decide.
openSUSE Tumbleweed makes for a good desktop and even one for gaming, but for a workstation or server, you're going to want either SUSE Leap or Enterprise.
Sadly, SUSE is really trying to push their immutable systems with transactional updates. And unfortunately, that will soon include openSUSE Leap.
I will give credit where credit is due. SUSE will allow some binaries to run from /home, but /opt is questionable. The development seems to be on the fence on that.
@Linux_Is_Best Objections your honour! I have been running half a down servers with #opensuse#microos successfully for about two years. Some with #k3s, some with #podman, some with applications directly running on the OS.
Hat jemand von euch schonmal MicroOS oder Silverblue für längere Zeit als Hauptsystem genutzt? Ich würde mich riesig freuen wenn Ihr euch per Mail oder PN meldet. Wir suchen nach Erfahrungen.
