Am not from the US, so I don’t care a bit about Pelosi. Assange itself made it apparent he’s on a russian payroll.
For one, when the Panama Papers came out, Assange was quick to critise it for badmouthing russians. To quote them:
#PanamaPapers Putin attack was produced by OCCRP which targets Russia & former USSR and was funded by USAID and Soros"
Hell, let’s take Assange’s words about why they never poke Russia?
In Russia, there are many vibrant publications, online blogs, and Kremlin critics such as Navalny are part of that spectrum. There are also newspapers like Novaya Gazeta, in which different parts of society in Moscow are permitted to critique each other and it is tolerated, generally, because it isn’t a big TV channel that might have a mass popular effect, its audience is educated people in Moscow. So my interpretation is that in Russia there are competitors to WikiLeaks, and no WikiLeaks staff speak Russian, so for a strong culture which has its own language, you have to be seen as a local player.
Literally nothing happened, no: the only consequence was the car bombing and the murder of the journalist who uncovered the scandal, Daphne Caruana Galizia. #EnjoyCapitalism#EnjoyDemocracy
@Polynomial_C that's simply untrue. Lionel Messi paid a gigantic fine. Icelandic government fell. Mossack Fonseca, the company in the center of this, was dissolved. Laws were changed.
It's far from perfect, but saying that "nothing happened" is not just incorrect, it's ignorant and harmful. Because it implies that nothing can ever change. That's exactly what the powers that are want us to think.
Context: I had worked at #OCCRP, one of the outlets reporting on #PanamaPapers, at the time.
C'est ce que les enquêtes de l'@icij et leurs partenaires ont rapporté au fisc français en 10 ans. Les #PanamaPapers représentent à eux seuls plus de 200 millions.
"Corporate crime" is an oxymoron in America. While it's true that the most consequential and profligate theft in America is #WageTheft, its mechanisms are so obscure and, well, dull that it's easy to sell us on the false impression that the real problem is shoplifting:
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
Like the corporate crimes revealed in the #PanamaPapers and #ParadisePapers, the gambit is complicated, but it's not sophisticated:
i. Make everything as complicated as possible;
ii. Make everything as secret as possible;
iii. Dismiss any accusations by claiming errors in the account of the deliberately complex arrangements, which can't be rectified because the relevant materials are a secret.
It's almost like everyone is distracted by the fact that a journalist was or wasn't actually involved in the Panama Papers was killed and not the ACTUAL issue of the wealthy hiding their money. Funny how the trolls are getting thick on Mastodon now that X is falling apart. #PanamaPapers

Noticing a lot of instance admins lately who are feeling pretty down.
Please remember that the vast majority of admins and moderators in this space do not do this work as a day job, nor as paid work. They have other projects and deadlines and bills and family and actual living plants. Please have the good grace to be patient with them 💜
*By which I mean do not abuse, harass, dox, threaten etc. Jeez.

After years of avoiding extradition, Julian Assange’s appeal is likely his last chance. Here’s how it might unfold (and how we got here) (theconversation.com)
