I have seen the downsides of the Quote Post feature on Threads lately. There it is in even wider, in constant use, because there is no shares shown on your profile.
Quoting a post often puts others in a spotlight and not always in very flattering way. I have made that mistake myself as well. It doesn’t feel good if you criticize someone this way and people start slandering and it’s out of your control. I sometimes feel like a bully using it.
So if/when we ever get a Quote Post functionality here on Mastodon, I hope it will be different. Perhaps in this case the problem is Threads and the algorithm and not the feature itself though.
short version: we have a small set of bugs to fix and chores to do before an App Store release, and quote post UI will come after that, in version 1.8.
@weirdwriter Hey Robert, thanks for writing this article, I had a nice read. :alice_wine:
I'm still somewhat doubtful about doing away with or having less "objective" journalism, to be honest. My older brother used to work with #Reuters so I can get quite defensive when it comes to his field (probably more so than he does, and I'm not even a journalist or studying to be one that is remotely related to it lol :koakuma_giggle:). You can read my #quotepost (which will appear as a RE: at the bottom of this reply in your Mastodon webapp) of your toot to see some more details on why I think so and what could or might be done. Reading more about the field after your article however, I can agree now that it's a pretty sucky job to work on. This might've been one of the factors that led to my brother giving up on his journalist career, despite Reuters pretty much welcoming him with wide arms from the very beginning... :sagume_think:
@rasterweb I think people don’t quite get that in the Mastodon experience, what the “official” app or website does is of little, to no relevance. My #QuotePost experience, both in writing and reading, is identical to the one I used to have on Twitter, because the app I use presents quote posts in that fashion.
Idk how it´s displayed on a Mastodon instance, but to me, it looks like a quote post. Also, there´s "threaded replies" and full-text search and many other goodies. Last but not least, the UI is better, in fact, Calckey is imo way superior compared to Mastodon.
You might take this little post as an #introduction to this gem of software.
Stopped using #Elk instead of the default web version of #Mastodon.
The interface is beautiful, and additional features are great - but on top of it being a bit slow, it's buggy. When pressing the icons it usually detects tap on the wrong element (below or above). It's annoying.
I like to boost the things I disagree with, but I'm kinda afraid some might think I agree with them that way. This is the only context where Quote Posts would be useful feature to have. Right now I leave many things unboosted because I don't want to label myself. #QuotePosts#QuotePost#Mastodon
Mastodon improving the onboarding experience along with some new features like quote posts.
"To make this step easier, we now have a default sign-up option that works with a server we operate. If you wish to leave or join a different server, you can do so at any time."
is there a standard patch for quote posts that works on mainline Mastodon or Glitch? i remember hearing that maybe Hometown or Treehouse had something that interops properly with Misskey quote posts?
The clear message I am getting from Bluesky is that black people felt unsafe on mastodon. Black Twitter was a huge part of what made it special, and it's been notably absent on mastodon. I will be sad if mastodon loses to a less-open alternative because it couldn't figure out how to be welcoming to everyone.
I think, one of the reason used against this feature from way back in 2016 (when Mastodon first came out), was that it disconnects the conversation. Once it's disconnected, you do not know what's happening (borders on moderation already).
I remember saying then and now that it doesn't have to be. A QuotePost/QuoteReply can still be shown within the same thread.
Since it was all about choice and permissions, I suggested the following: Original Poster
toggle: disallow quoteposts/quotereplies (default is false)
if above is false, then, toggle: allow quoteposts attached to your thread (default is true)
QuotePost/QuoteReply
if “disallow quoteposts” == false && “allow quoteposts attached” == true, then offer
toggle: disconnect from the original thread (default is false)
I would like to think that most would keep it ‘false’. And if “toggle disallow quotepost” is true, then the only way is to manually copy the link into a new post (not using the quotepost feature itself).
It satisfies the OP's desire to make a decision about quoteposts/quotereplies; while at the same time, it also satisfies the freedom of the other users.
It isn't perfect, and it's probably not a good idea to implement this level of control/permissions. But, I think it addresses the concerns of both parties in the debate.
I, for one, would prefer quoteposts/quotereplies to be attached to the original thread. But, at the same time, I want to give the users an option to ‘disconnect’ from the original thread.
Anyway…
When you are quoteposting/quotereplying to a thread in #Calckey, the quotepost/quotereply still shows in the original thread, like this one, when viewed from Calckey. It doesn't when viewed from other #fediverse / #MycelialNetwork software.
