Wrote a #Bash script to use WP-CLI to dump the database, then #Rclone to sync the files to Dropbox.
It pings HealthChecks.io to monitor progress & success/fail.
That was finally working well. 👍
Then calling it from a #cronjob revealed the need to use full paths to commands like #PHP & WP-CLI. Took a bit to find (force) the logging of the cron to see what was wrong.
Still unclear why some commands (curl, etc) work fine.
The nice thing, is using the sync mode of #Rclone means the initial upload took ages but successive backups only do the changed files so it's pretty quick.
Also had to debug ways to ease back the rate limiting from #Dropbox, luckily there was some good info about this in the Rclone discussion forums.
It cracks me up that Rclone refuses to sync Thumbs.db files. It spits an error when it encounters them. Even file copy utilities hate these! 🤣 This was an effective way to find and purge these.
#Mega suppoort told me not to use #rclone sync as it's a shoddly put together pile of crap and abuses their API. So now I'm using #MegaCMD which crashes out my Pi3, so I'm upgrading to a Pi5.
Anyone else use #rclone with #mega? Are your #backups working? Seems mine suddenly stopped on ~28th Feb. It is now failing to log in and hanging up my #RaspberryPi.
I've uninstalled Debian's stable version (V1.60.1+dfsg-2+b5) of rclone and installed from git (V1.66.0). Still having the issue. Tried removing all configs, tried with --debug and --verbose flags both show nothing other than trouble logging in.
I don't have 2FA enabled as it's unsupported on rclone.
Tools used are #restic and #rclone. All data is encrypted client side before being shipped to the cloud.
Comparing up-times, speeds (both down and up), and the correctness of the data stored. The last part was done using a VPS, and the data was found to be identical.
On speed (up and down) Jotta wins, Hetzner comes second, Mega fluctuates wildly.
On up-time Jotta and Hetzner tie, Mega went off-line for me at some points (worrysome)
On price Jotta also wins. Mega comes second, Hetzner last.
So I'll stick with Jotta. It's hosted in europe, it's fast, it's priced decently, support reacted fast when I asked some (noob) questions.
"[Restic v0.16.3] fixes a couple of bugs on Windows and in the restore command. It also works around an unlikely yet possible situation with rclone which could potentially result in data loss."
I'm totally in favor with your post, but not everyone is willing to self-host or is capable of doing it. So I recommendation would be and one that I'm currently using, is when uploading a file to these cloud services encrypt your files. I'm using #cryptomator, but I'm sure there are other alternatives, like #rclone. There is also #veracrypt, but to my understanding, is not great for cloud sync.
Cryptomator is open source and free, but only on desktop. To use the mobile version, you will have to pay. Here is a list of alternatives to cryptomator, if you are familiar with one, please share your knowledge.
Really need to automate my offsite backups. Right now I have to manually tar+zstd with a timestamp then upload to AWS Glacier Instant Retrieval (with the cli), or use the aws cli to sync a directory. I really like the low cost of S3 Glacier IR, but maybe I'll transition back to Backblaze for the lower standard tier cost.
@arch I'm using #restic to backup, which then use #rclone to sync to B2. The config is in #Nix albeit very rudimentary.
Since you're active on Nix, I'd like to see if this is of any use to you? [1] I wrote an article on how it was setup, minus Nix [2]. I'd love to get your feedback on it if you see something that could be improved on.
I'd like to have it in a cleaner config like how Borg is done today [3].
I'm copying 10GB to onedrive with #rclone (10,000 files). It's taking hours, so i must be getting throttled/rate limited (my site has 10Gb/s internet). But what's interesting is that my office365 stopped allowing email search at the same time (colleagues unaffected). Q.E.D. Using onedrive DOSes features in O365. Mad
Ok Google, I know you are busy, but can you at least be consistent with the download speeds? Geez. 30GB/s one minute and 5K the next.. #rclone#googledrive#migrate#synology#google
Dropbox is sharing users' files with OpenAI, here's how to opt out (boingboing.net)
