@msquebanh my parents have an amazing Quince tree that produces gigantic fruit. I need to convince my wife.... 😆

@chris You can make so much different foods & alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks with them too. I hope your wife says, Yes - to quince tree.

@msquebanh you must know all the secret places. That bear’s den is close to Butterfield park in Central Saanich.

msquebanh,
@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@tobiaspatton Definitely don't know all of the secret places but enjoy walking/hiking around parks & public wild lands, looking for interesting things. It's one of my fave longtime nature hobbies! I have placed some small treasures in random spots in many parks around here & all over the island, where I've enjoyed nature adventures 😊 I put the random treasures in waterproof, reusable bags/containers. Usually they're nature related gifts but sometimes I put jewelry & money in them too.

In Winter, we just move pots into unheated greenhouse & they keep on providing us food. Same with a few other salad greens.

@kellyromanych They're tasty greens!

Seen/photographed from car window.

foraging around someone's front yard. It strolled back into the forest nearby, shortly after.

@enog @kayakpatrick There was zero people on the boardwalk earlier - just me & Mom. Then, just me on way back because my Mom freaked the heck out over loud noise in forest & ran like hell, back to car 🤣 She thought it was a bear. It was a raccoon.

#CowParsnip is the ONLY #Heracleum species that's native to #NorthAmerica. There's many look-a-likes including the very toxic giant hogweed. I don't recommend trying to #forage & harvest them unless you're very experienced with identifying differences because it's dangerous to do so.

@msquebanh I immediately thought "danger" when I saw the pictures.

There's an invasive type here, the Heracleum mantegazzianum, which does look slightly different from this one.

It's not associated with anything positive. The sap causes swelling and blisters, and may leave scars if enough skin is damaged.

It's a target for eradication, though that's very hard to achieve.

msquebanh,
@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@justafrog All other Heracleums are invasive in North America. Only this one is not & it's a longtime Indigenous food & medicinal plant.

Spent some time hanging out with some blue #damselflies at the lake before coming back home 😊

Damselflies have existed since the Late #Jurassic period & found on every continent except Antarctica. Presence of damselflies & the larger dragonflies, indicates a healthy #ecosystem.

I love dragonflies. This one was on a limb way overhead. I used a 300 mm lens with 1.4x teleconverter to get a picture of it.

@Eka_FOOF_A I love both damselflies & dragonflies. Both quite similar but different insects ❤️

Some used the to make musical instruments, like flutes, clappers & small whistles & smoking implements. The soft wood was used as a spindle twirling stick to make fire by friction.
