The poly tunnel … and so it begins- empty beds and tiny plants will transform over the next couple of months all being well. @gardening

@ScotHomestead @gardening. The garden vegetable starts are looking to get in the garden soil here too. We’ve had a stretch of wet weather and that is great for the planet. It’s been too wet for proper planting. The soil has been a sticky mess when compacted around the starts. , , .

Some of the that I explored around the property yesterday. It smelled so good in the forest. I heard so many different wildlife calls. Forests are my happy places ❤️🌲🌲❤️
Nature is my spiritual temple.

@msquebanh. We have bird houses for tree swallows and purple Martin swallows. We understand insects have a role. We’ve seen scout birds a few times the last few days. However no one has picked a spot yet. #biodiversity.

Today our 20ish-year-old cat passed away and we had to put an end to his suffering.

I would like to express that despite having to witness his suffering for Earth Day I tried to not make this about me as much as I could because, to be honest, The climate crisis is an issue that has severe consequences.

I could not give less of a shit about those who choose inaction and to be careless. I am sorry but if you can't have compassion for this issue there is something wrong with you.

I love the earth deeply and this gives me the courage to care and despite adversity to do what is good.

Needless to say, climate change deniers are going to be uncared for by this community.

Husband: There's a spider on my shirt can you get it?
I catch the tiny grain sized spider
Me: I'm feeding this to the girls!
Husband: Nooooo! That's horrible.
Me: But they love spiders the most...
Husband: You have to give it a chance put it outside.
Me: It's too cold it will die. Let me just feed-
Husband: 🥺
Me: OK fine. I'll put it on the bookshelf.

I leave the spider in an open tiny glass vial on its side on the shelf.

The spider is lazy. When I get home it's built a web in the jar.

@msquebanh. Keep the balance. No covid exposures through the medical appointments. Of course.

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@msquebanh Five plus years without an airborne illness during the covid years is excellent work. The reward for this is to keep doing it.

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@msquebanh Non essential exposure environments covers a lot. It’s good to live in the tall trees and get outside.

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@msquebanh. Eating in a group is exposure without a giant table and a stiff breeze.

The compost pile is not photogenic. The temperature is about 15 Celsius which is about 60 Fahrenheit. This compost is alive in April in southern Minnesota. There is never enough compost, even if your neighbors contribute. Compost is a band aid for the planet. , , .

Okay: here’s the thing. My compost pile has taken some big hits in the last year or two. Nothing bad, mind you- but my use has outpaced my production.
I’ve been thinking about getting an electric shredder- to put the clippings/leaves/whatever through prior, with the hopes that increasing the surface area might help speed things along.
Is this worthwhile? Anyone have a machine recommendation?
(I’m simultaneously working on a better compost setup, worry not)

@compost My super fancy compost bin. Anyone can build one with spare materials or even just have a pile. The bin helps keep out small animals and my dog from the pile for me. Once every years a bear comes along and opens it like a cardboard box so I don't fuss about it being nice. What type of bin if any do other people use?

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@jbussieres @compost. Thank you for sharing your bear aware outdoor compost system. Our outdoor system in southern Minnesota does not have to be bear aware. Our system has metal T posts and sheep wire fencing. It’s usually a two bay system. Our pallets lean on the fence to add shade. Our cover is cardboard weighted down by boards. We rotate the compost with a pitchfork working from the open, north side. , . Composting will save the world.

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@jbussieres @compost. It is important to have easy access for the pitchfork and I. Our compost material volumes work for this system. , .

Gardeners: do you have recommendations for reputable resources/experts on planting seeds directly in the soil? I’m in USDA zone 7B with a last frost of April 15 (probably a little earlier this year) and I don’t have energy to start seeds inside and transplant them. They will go into raised metal beds prepared with quality soil and an in-bed vermicompost system. Thank you. Also open to suggestions for hashtags and groups. #Gardening #GardeningMastodon
#VegetableGardening #Permaculture @gardening

Pollinators,
@Pollinators@epicure.social avatar

@ImmedicableME @gardening. We are in in southern . We usually have frosts in mid May. Your last frost date is a good time to try direct sow seeds. Beans and peas are direct sow seedlings. Swiss chard is another one. These are ok if you have some cool temperatures in April. , . When you follow gardening people on Mastodon you see gardening all over the world. Have fun gardening.
