Anyone know of a good alternative to Kavita for eBooks? I don't care for calibre no matter how powerful it is. That UI is just a complete non-starter.

Tried Komga, but couldn't get it to work.

@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I left FreshRSS for a while to try Miniflux but personally just couldn’t get on board with the UI so I’m back to FreshRSS and have no plans on moving again. The great thing about RSS is that I can simply export my .opml file into whatever feed aggregator I choose.

@AkaSci That's why I was on Twitter as long as I was. Until I realized I was trying to scoop water out of the Titanic with a spork and decided the best thing for my well being was to finally just jump ship.

🤦‍♂️ Mozilla has apparently decided to get into the advertising business.

"We are growing the team to create a digital platform that is consistent with Mozilla’s principles. As an early member of the product team you will help drive our vision to best serve users and advertisers with effective respecting ad products."

@downey I get that ads pay the bills and all, but does anyone really believe a privacy respecting ad product can actually be done?

@drewdevault Right. This is the difference between a (incoherent) libertarian vs a teleological model of freedom.

The VPS is pulling a by forcing people into agreeing to their new TOS that will give them full perpetual commercial rights over all your hosted content.

There is no way to decline and you can't access your control panel unless you click agree.

I suspect they're planning to sell your data to AI model creators.

This is the second phase of the enshitification process. I recommend jumping ship now.

I find this video amazingly helpful. I don't have , but I often have trouble concentrating. If there's anything that can draw my attention away, it does. Even listening to more traditional music can pull me into lyrics instead of what I'm trying to focus on. When I do manage to focus, my attention is like a glass plate. If it gets broken, it REALLY gets broken. It's a battle to get all those pieces back in place.

I've been using GNU screen for over 20 years. It's been my go to for terminal multiplexers. I think I can use the word "literally" when I say every time I bring this up someone suggests I move to tmux because it's better. I don't disagree, but man that command prefix (Ctrl-B) is just hard to get used to. I know I can change it in the config, but I'm trying not to so I'm used to how it's default installed. It just doesn't feel intuitive. It's so much more of a stretch to get to.

jordan_kendrick,
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike I absolutely hate the Prefix and Command keys in tmux. They make about as much sense as an ashtray on a motorcycle.

jordan_kendrick, to meta
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

My personal opinion is that joining the will be a net positive. Primarily due to the mainstream attention the Fediverse will garner.

It's a lot to think about surely, but to my mind, was always meant to facilitate two things: Decentralization and interconnectedness. All while preserving the ultimate freedom which is the freedom to disassociate. It was never meant to prevent Facebook from pursuing their corporate interests. They're going to do that no matter what.

jordan_kendrick,
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

If Meta wants to present ads, they're only going to be able to present ads to the people using their apps and platforms. They can't present ads to me over on Mastodon, yet I get the benefit of following the dozen or so people whose content I'm interested in that chose to live in Facebook land.

I'm curious what other people think.

jordan_kendrick,
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu I don't think they're going to have much success getting Fediverse natives to leave for Facebook land. Rather I see the benefit being in exposing the Facebook natives to the larger world of the Fediverse. I certainly see more people leaving Facebook in favor of smaller instances than I see people leaving the smaller instances to move over to Facebook.

jordan_kendrick,
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu That's an intersting point. I hadn't thought much about all the Twitter migrants. Yet I still tend to think most of the normies are either still on Twitter, or left Twitter for Threads, and the ones that actually left won't make the mistake of going back to any of the big platforms. I think ActivityPub is going to become so mainstream that it would be detrimental to Facebook's best interests to handicap their integration. I really think the Fediverse is going to take over.

jordan_kendrick, to Vivaldi
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

I've seen some privacy folks shilling . Perhaps it needs to be said that any project that has 1 line of proprietary code is by definition unverifiable, and thus unknowable which, to me, makes it ultimately untrustable. You cannot know that Vivaldi is not doing something with your data. Which for something as wide ranging and monolithic as a , to me, is unacceptable. "Just trust me bro" is not an acceptable axiom when it comes to true .

jordan_kendrick,
@jordan_kendrick@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel People (as well as Vivaldi itself) tout it for it’s “privacy features” which is pure privacy theater. It has great features, no doubt! My point is that believing it’s not doing anything weird or shady is fundamentally unverifiable and must forever remain just that, an opinion.
