From the newsletter of Rep. Galvin, an opportunity to testify on a proposed state income tax.

I strongly support an income tax and view our current 44 year tax holiday as a huge mistake which has shifted vast sums of resource wealth to a single generation and set the next generations up for difficult times ahead.

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@patrace So a tax of $4000 if you make $200,000 and $20 if you make $199,999? What could go wrong?

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@patrace I’m 100% for an income tax.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea remains a bit below the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data There's been only limited variation in the position of the ice edge the past four weeks due to the frequently changeable winds. Maximum ice extent is typically reached in March, so there's still time for expansion, though with significant storm likely in the western Bering Sea later this week, bringing south to southeast winds, the clock is ticking.

I often include Uelen when Wales data is missing. Unfortunately nothing else close to Alaska. There are aviation obs but no climate data from Provideniya. Here's what's available.

High temperatures in and around Alaska on Friday. Nothing unusual, just a bit of weekend noodling to try and find the best mix of data for representativeness, variability and legibility.

February average precipitation (melted snow plus rain) 50-year change in and around Alaska. Western Alaska into the central Interior typically sees much more precip nowadays than in Februarys of yesteryear. The slight drying in Southeast Alaska is not (statistically) significant. Nerd alert: FWIW…current US Global Forecast Ensemble System has March definitely coming in like a lion over nearly all of Alaska. This morning's NBM has a March 1 low temp for Fairbanks of -31F /-35.0C.

Of course, what it's worth may be very little, though EPS same ballpark. @Climatologist49

In case you were wondering, why yes, the global average daily temperature is still the highest on record, as it has been almost every day since early July 2023. Graphic courtesy U. Maine's Climate Reanalyzer using ERA5 reanalysis.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea has decreased a bit in the past week due to storminess and southeast winds. Current extent is about 17 percent below the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. There is still plenty of time for ice to expand: the maximum ice extent in the Bering Sea is typically reached between late Feburary and late March.

Alaska’s Cold Snap 2024 is done. In some areas the past two weeks featured the coldest sustained weather in 15 years. At others, a day or two of intense cold was more prominent. While quite cold for the 21st century, this event doesn’t even rate an asterisk compared to 20th century cold snaps. Lowest community temperature was at perennially cold spot of Chicken at -62F (-52.2C).
