I bought a squeegee and tried to clean my windows. They look slightly worse now...

AmpBenzScientist,
@AmpBenzScientist@qoto.org avatar

@thor Try automotive glass cleaner that comes in a spray bottle. It should be mostly isopropyl alcohol. It was my secret as a custodian. In the US, something like regular window cleaner can leave streaks. On a vehicle this could result in an accident and a lawsuit.

Rubbing alcohol works well at 70% or higher. To get rid of the streaks just wipe the squeegee after each pass. The alcohol should leave a surface that reminds one that they forgot the outside.

Electronics from the 90s and 00s don't feel like they've become collector's items yet. But there are signs that Gen Z has the same nostalgia for that era that Gen Y has for the 70s and 80s.

AmpBenzScientist,

@thor There where arcades with really amazing games. House of the Dead, Area 51 and San Francisco Rush were a lot of fun. Playing Tekken while two hormone charged teens were having a good time in a dimly lit arcade. Brightly colored candy that was very expensive and tasted terrible. Apparently the candy was illegal too.

They were truly magical times.

Moisturizer is just a heroin addiction for your skin. Do people even realize that if you use it more than a few times it causes your skin to need it to even function and like cigarettes you need to use it just to get your skin like it used to be.

People who use it for years and then stop will literally have their skin peeling off and cracking.

I would love to undertand better the reason/psychology/development of some homosexual men to speak in that distinctive way of speaking that seems exclusive to gay men. Like it isnt an accent, and doesnt seem to occur naturally since its exclusive to that group. Do gay men make it a point to learn to speak that way at some point? If so why?

My best guess is as a way to show their orientation publicly to signal to other gay men, in an effort to creat connections or find companions that are also gay? But that would imply its a conscious thing they learnedto do at some point?

PS please no inconsiderate responses. Be respectful people.

AmpBenzScientist,
@AmpBenzScientist@qoto.org avatar

@freemo @salcedo They are good laptops but the OEM has participated in Supply Chain Attacks for a long time. All the back doors that were accidentally left in and APTs from the Mainland targeting them with ease.

It's usually Firmware and UEFI that I've seen compromised. It would have to be the Chinese APTs responsible. I've never seen such impressive and efficient exploitation. I've seen Chinese software bypass Knox without tripping alarms back when it was an accomplishment. I've seen it hit Thinkpads bypassing the CPU security processor and other hardware security without it being noticed. It wasn't old hardware, it was still under warranty in some cases.

I hope you have an ace up your sleeve. None of my hardware was able to pull a sample. It's a shame because that was beautiful malware and I would have loved to have a sample. It was persistent, evasive and took me a few hours to recognize there was a threat and how deep it was. It wiped itself after discovery only leaving the same behavior after.

I can't say where I found it. I will say that their Sys Admin couldn't remote brick the device. They were upsetti spaghetti that I found something and used a little trick to bypass some of the security.

I'm not going to say that a portable firewall/router with custom settings will stop everything but it can buy some time or perhaps stop the vPro kill signal.

This was somewhere during the early Covid Years and the closest thing I could find to the capabilities of it was something that was used on NK by China. Even Kaspersky wasn't able to get a complete sample.

TL;DR Thinkpads are to businesses what MacBooks are to Art Schools. The supply chain is sketchy with the company having an odd history of over powered exploits and the firmware is locked down enough to prevent easy analysis. Just be careful with those laptops. I'm not a pro but I'm certainly not a novice. I still don't fully understand how it got past the Sys Admin but I would defend their actions because Certifications displaced useful information in their mind.

AmpBenzScientist,

@thor I certainly have followed my passions. There are just so many things to be passionate about.

The modern world just uses passionate people to grind into nepotistic paste. The only jobs I had that didn't grind me down were working on equipment and doing IT work. I miss them both but it always felt like I was pissing my life away at it.

On the other hand, I can always keep doing what I find fulfilling in my own time. That's one of the reasons why I'd rather just work on and with heavy equipment. They can't own my mind. If I find something that could assist the operation, I'll make sure to make a money pit of a reverse engineering task.

" is in a very tough business, and with RISC-V coming up and being truly open source, it can only push and pull so hard"

https://www.nextplatform.com/2024/02/08/making-dollars-and-sense-of-arm-holdings/

AmpBenzScientist,
@AmpBenzScientist@qoto.org avatar

@niclas @lupyuen The T-HEAD cores are open source. I suspect they are odd because they were pulled from their targeted applications.

You can get on GitHub and run a C910 if you have a powerful enough FPGA because they have the Verilog up. It's not going to be the 16 core module that was supposed to be part of a larger system.

At least T-Head released information when alleged competitors hide their information. RISC-V was a good idea but it just lets others blatantly copy and obfuscate the fact that they copied a design. If you want a good example, look at the C910 and other manufacturers who made innovations after it. They outperform it because they took inspiration and made it on a smaller process with some improvements.

If one thing is clear about RISC-V, to me, it's that copycats love open source and T-Head processors show their heritage by being difficult. It's almost as if their processors aren't as trashy as the implementations are but are instead being obtuse because they are not working with hundreds more cores in a system cared for by scientists who know how to make them work properly.

If you have read this far, congratulations. We still don't have an Open FPGA that hasn't been reverse engineered. The problem with RISC-V is that it got controlled by companies and it has little to no integrity. Applaud the company that took a RISC-V processor and paired it to nearly dead GPU technology that still refuses to make it open.

Perhaps I'm too cynical about the open hardware aspect that could have been and I should just embrace the shameless desecration of ideals. Perhaps I'm bitter about past experiences that lead me to believe that a man with an interest in open hardware was misled by a few companies and it rocked their business. Just put legal landmines in the mix and we are at the current state of RISC-V. There's good, there's bad and there's the reality that this is how it's going to be. I don't see RISC-V as a path forward for those who want open source or open hardware.

With all that being said, I could see T-Head destroying competition with what would be a considerably small investment and make a fully open source and open hardware SoC that has its own open GPU that's wrapped up with a non commercial use clause. It might sell poorly but it would be yet another first they could claim. The Party wouldn't like it, their competitors would try to destroy it and the US would be bribed to not accept it. Perhaps it would be successful as it's ideologically pure, modern computation is plagued by inefficiencies which are legal landmines and the fact that no intelligence agencies can trust their own hardware because they had the foresight to embed backdoors in everything.

Dear @QOTO , I'm an academic and as such I try to stay on the watch about what other academics are doing. I am generally convinced that qoto.org is an outstanding platform to do that.

Recently, I've had 3 instances of not being able to follow people on scholar.social which makes me think there's been some sort of defederation between the two instances.

Having quickly examined the local feeds of the two instances, I can imagine that there are some cultural differences between the way these instances are administered. However, from some accounts I am aware of on both instances, I believe both have positive and well intended communities.

I wonder whether there's anything I, as a user, could do to help resolve any possible issues with defederation? In general, what are the organisational mechanisms behind such collective processes? What are the possibilities for mitigation, mediation or whatever?

And last, but not least, is there a mechanism to verify my assumption that this is an issue about defederation?
