Maybe it's because I'm a naturalized U.S. citizen, but when people threaten to withhold their vote in protest I can't help but wonder what the actual fuck they think they're accomplishing by a) demoting themselves into non-citizen status and b) announcing their asinine decision

@DataDrivenMD As a born citizen, it seems counterproductive UNLESS the person does not believe in the two-party system (which, at the moment, is not doing the average U.S. citizen any favors and coddles the wealthy). But then IMHO those people need to be actively working to change the system that they understandably do not believe in. Democracy does not pan out if your elected officials do not serve the will of the people. And that’s become a real issue in the U.S. They serve $$.

@benroyce @DataDrivenMD But voting can be illegally influenced and hacked, which Russia proved and everyone seems to have forgotten. What happens when AI and outside agents impact the voting system? What do we trust about our one vote? Also: Black people DIED for the right to vote so I always do. The system’s in need of of change. (Voting redistricting 😡) Can you effectively change the system from within? Or do you just move the checkers around on the same board?

@benroyce @DataDrivenMD I want to believe that. But I have the sinking feeling that the kind of change we’ve made (and has been reversed around the country even though folks get out and vote) is like treading water in a swimming pool on a sinking ship. Sure, the water is heated and the pool chairs are comfy and we all have access to fancy drinks… but what has essentially changed when both parties serve corporations that are screwing everyone??

I am once again broken by what I am learning today:

  • By how badly Gaza’s major hospital was destroyed and patients left…many emaciated, burned and crushed.
  • By the killing by Israel of aid workers at World Central Kitchen, which I’ve supported in its humanitarian effort in Gaza.
  • By Israel’s bombing of Iran’s embassy in Syria to assassinate a military official.

How are these crimes allowed? Even Israelis are protesting. Would the U.S. stand by if ANY other country had bombed an embassy??

It suddenly occurred to me that some of the screenplay competitions out there, especially the new ones and especially the free ones, might very well be using submitted scripts as training tools for AI and writers are unwittingly facilitating that with their original work.

A bogus Disney fan site Disneydining.com claims Disney will now refrain from hiring “woke” diversity hires based on age, background or ethnicity and will only want “the best of the best.” As if diversity hires could not possibly also be the best for the job and only a White male would be. “This apparent restructuring could mean eliminating diversity hires and a stronger focus on the individual’s experience, skillset, and salary requirements.”

It can be frustrating to read the way that people who are unaware of all of the things that “police presence” will do to a neighborhood write about police abolition— even when they are making an effort to understand they still regard police as something that, if removed, would need to be replaced. After all? who will stop the criminals? Who will keep the neighborhood from descending into chaos?

What they fail to understand is that the police are the chaos. 1/

@futurebird I agree with most of this but we cannot get away from the violence exacted on those considered “weak,” including women and children, by those in power. And it can be anyone from police to the military, criminals, a local bully, a town leader, a teacher, armed or not, openly or hidden. We need some kind of system to protect those who are not safe from those who — from time immemorial and across cultures and countries — have sought to take and harm.

A concerning but not totally unexpected trend: Billionaires aren’t just building mega luxury silos. They are trying to create exclusive cities to hoard resources as climate disaster gets worse. “California Forever: A billionaire-backed group buying up land for their utopian vision of a new city in Solano County has sparked outrage from farmers who don’t want to sell land that has been in their families for generations.” The Haves and Have Nots are poised for some serious battles.

@PadreWil I actually respect a weapon as a hunting tool and for target sports. I’ve had recurve bow and crossbow lessons. Friends have rifles and shotguns in rural areas. I’ve gone to the shooting range with friends. I know women and BIPOC suburban and urban residents (including my father) who kept shotguns for protection. I draw the line at semi automatic weapons and AR15s. I have no interest in handguns, though I seem to handle one pretty well on the range.
