My spouse delights me. I've been rumbling this week as we get ready for a move and swamped by shame for my reactions—I hate feeling out of control.

They gave me a gift. I did not respond to the gift, felt awful for not acknowledging it, and then excessively apologized.

Spouse: "I never expect you to be excited about chocolate. If it were an appropriately shaped Reese's, that would be a whole different story."

Their comment made me feel loved and seen and brightened my evening. I have a particular way of eating certain foods and disassembling them in an order, which makes me very happy. When I struggle to be compassionate with myself or gentle with others, they still reach out to me.

@actuallyautistic Someone just recommended Alexandra Streliski as accompaniment for reading and writing—Mastadon crashed before I was able to pull the artist up on Spotify. Thank you! I was not familiar with them and I have enjoyed every song I’ve played. My spouse says thank you too. 🥰

@flowerpot @actuallyautistic you’re welcome! I hope my original post finds the person who shared this artist earlier today. I like you, I was just curious and my day was so much better for it. ♥️

I binge-read The Murderbot Diaries (1-7) by @marthawells, and now there are no more out, and I'm feeling unmoored. I have a very long TBR list, but... I want more Murderbot. Difficulty with social reciprocity, comfort in rewatching favorite series, disliking eye contact or touch, and so much more. I get why reviews say this series is "one of the most human experiences you can have in sci-fi."

brainweasel wrangling, edition!

After figuring out years ago that I can listen better, especially over long periods of time, if I have something to keep my hands busy, I try to always have a project on hand heading into multi-day meetings or conferences.

Ran out of time to prep for this one, so I started winding my skein into a yarn ball during opening remarks, got my sizing swatch done for a one-skein triangle shawl (Moogly Fortune's Shawlette) by the end of One Track Mind, and made a nice bit more progress during the firetalks...

It's the perfect con project - a simple diagonal-box-stitch repeat, no complex counting required. Just add a box every row until I run out of yarn, and then frog back until I have enough yarn left for the edging. 😁

@crochet

Yarn ball wound from that skein, sitting on my Ghibli Museum susuwatari crochet bag
Six-box sizing swatch of the Moogly Fortune's Shawlette, next to my ruler - exactly four inches! This never happens.
WIP triangle on a white sheet next to my ruler. I frogged the sizing swatch (because I hadn't expected to get it right on the first try and thus wasn't paying as close attention as I would have liked!) and still managed to end up with 8 inches of progress at the end of the evening...

I am working on a revised cover for Late-Identified AuDHD: A Beginner's Workbook (retitled 2nd edition). I've been repeatedly advised that using a dyslexic-friendly font in my work is unprofessional. Well, I am a professional with dyslexia... and the use of dyslexia-friendly fonts is a professional choice. Hard line.

@rebekka_m The 1st ed of the Late-Identified workbook is available right now! I released it in early 2023 for adults with a late identification or late diagnosis of & —place to start putting the pieces together. Available at most online booksellers:

This is really interesting on how 'attachment styles' relate to neurotype & why family gatherings are so hard for us.

We are hungry for connection, while our bodies & sensory systems are overwhelmed & desperately want to be alone ❤️‍🩹

Is there any value in pursuing a potential autism diagnosis as an adult, if a person gets along well enough in life and isn't interested in finding community?

BZBrainz, (edited )
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@smeg @actuallyautistic I simply didn't know I needed more knowledge, support, and tools to help myself than I had ever been allowed before. It was inconceivable to me that there were skills I could learn or accommodations I could ask for that could make some parts of life less challenging.

BZBrainz, (edited )
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@smeg @actuallyautistic Many people who did not know me well would have said I got on well enough—a challenging social barometer—and they would have been wrong. Though I'll admit, if I hadn't needed help, had deficits not been perceived by the doctor, I'd have not pursued diagnosis on my own due to stigma and internalized ableism.

This week’s blog post is on the personal side regarding restarting ADHD meds.

“How do I keep getting here? And why is it always during the hottest days of summer or the darkest days of winter? Well, they have something in common... high stress that exceeds the capacity of my boatload of non-pharmacological tools…..
I'm burning through my toolbox and bulldozing forward like burnout isn't on the horizon.”

Being present with someone when they are working through the initial discovery phases of late-identified without info dumping is challenging. Sometimes, that info dump is desperately wanted, and I am happy to provide insight/tools/recs, and sometimes, the person just needs a witness or someone to hear their processing or a parallel play partner so they know they aren't alone.

I just learned in a ND FB group that runny egg sandwiches are a common consumable.

I am fascinated AND my toes are curling to hide from extra sensory information.

I love a hot over easy egg to dip my butter diagonally cut toast into… and isn’t this basically a disassembled sandwich? 😶 My toes, which aren’t even involved, disagree. @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos

I was given the opportunity to push out an update to the first edition of the Late-Identified workbook. It is always embarrassing to find a typo—even with multiple editors, beta/ARC readers, + the hundreds of times I have read through it—but correcting mistakes is also a privilege.
