Something I think really fucks up our ability to act ethically is the denial that we are capable of causing harm..

📢 We become complicit in harms just by existing within the capitalist system 📢

It's a dreadful reality, but IMO accepting it puts you in a more effective spot to genuinely think about your choices, face their harmful consequences, and find ways to influence things for the better.

@sue Yup, I’ve had this too. I see similar behaviour sometimes when I ride my bike. People see it as a personal affront. I’ve always assumed they were externalising their guilt.

If I could offer one piece of advice about developer learning it would be this: enough content already, get folk hands-on the tech

In your product, in a developer environment, in a live training, get them touching the tech, content (esp docs) is important, but it's a bit like attending a lecture, we do not learn practical skills this way

Have you noticed how many ads there are on the TV showing cars driving through empty urban streets? From my daily experience in the urban environment, most people in cars spend most of their time moving from one slow queue of traffic to the next, cut off from the world around them. While I as a cyclist go sailing past, fully aware of my surroundings and able to engage with those who are not trapped in their own personal hell.

@kim_harding Just this afternoon I was walking down the Canongate and a friend cycled past. She got off and told me she’d just been to a wedding. We walked and talked for a few minutes, then she got back on her bike and carried on.

Like, gay people complaining about straight people, women complaining about men, Black people complaining about white people. Sure, you can butt in with “Hey, not ALL white men are bad!”. Or you can listen to the grievances and learn from them.
Moreover, “straight”, “white” and “men” can be used entirely without any anger, just as helpful descriptive words.

I was never that impressed with the idea of a Two-State-Solution to the - conflict, especially with the West Bank carved up like it was. But hey, if it helped achieve peace, then that was surely a good thing. But now, more than ever, I think we need to recognise that we need one state, free of . All citizens, no matter what their religion or ethnicity, equal and free. It worked in South Africa, and it can work again in Israel/Palestine.

@serge Everyone should be an equal citizen. The West Bank operates under an apartheid regime. The West Bank is quite clearly NOT under PA control, or there wouldn’t be Jewish settlers protected by the IDF there. And although settlers and soldiers pulled out of Gaza, it’s been under a crushing blockade ever since. Israel clearly controlla all that territory, but it does not give all of the people that live there equal rights.
