@mcc entirely sincere. Every time I use google search, which is more frequently than I'd like, the tracking all turned themselves back on again. I think the option to turn it off is entirely a false button.

I feel like very recently— like, the last month— Google has gotten massively worse about aggressively correcting acronyms to unrelated, similarly-spelled words. Like look at this search where I search for the wiki for the C# game library FNA, and Google simply decides, without even offering a "Did you mean…", that it would be more interesting if I had instead been looking for "FNAF"

Bigshellevent,
@Bigshellevent@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I would love to see a collective recognition on at what point each search engines got worse for different people. I'd say Google fell off the usefulness for me around 2022, caveat being I don't allow personalised searches and Google searching in Chinese is always like googling each individual letters rather than words. But I also noted a new, more malicious thing where it will intentionally change terms. Like looking for "dairy-free" and it will give you all the promoted dairy products.

@mcc this is literally my biggest hatred about tech in general. Lots of changes/compatibility issues are changes for the sake of it, they improve nothing, and break perfectly usable things made for a version before them.

This is mostly regarding to pointless changing of UI, but also WordPress.

There's a trilogy by Alastair Reynolds with the slightly clunky name of "The Prefect Dreyfus Emergencies". The books are named Aurora Rising, Elysium Fire, & Machine Vendetta. Oddly, the Toronto public library has only the second two, not the first, in its ebook app.

I think I've managed to convince myself this is because there's an unrelated book from a decade later named "Aurora Rising". I think some person or program convinced themselves they were the same book, so they didn't need both.

Hey, here's a tip. Frequently make extremely specific, completely random predictions in situations which will be interpreted as a joke, but which leaves a durable digital artifact. If you do this enough times over a long enough period, one of your joke predictions will be spot on, you'll look like a genius, and nobody will notice that although you have a tweet accurately predicting the date of Joe Biden's death you also had 7 other tweets inaccurately predicting it.

Fantasy world where they have been breeding dragons to be smaller and smaller until they have little toy dragons that can sit in your lap and are popular among noble ladies and if you leave them unattended in a home they will gather up all the low denomination change under dressers and such and push them into a corner to make a tiny $4.78 hoard to sit on

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

An unusual thing about the fediverse is the size and content is such that whenever there's a spammer, the entire mastoverse winds up talking about it. Not even always requiring, like, a spam campaign. Sometimes the entire feed is talking about a single piece of spam.

Bigshellevent,
@Bigshellevent@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc so this makes me think about .social. what I find is interesting about .social is that, if you go onto Local TL, the spams will be incredibly common, incredibly odd (a few pretty intense biochem faux journal articles that used lots of jargons but flatly made no sense), incredibly multilingual, and um incredibly allosexually urological.

Yet what stood out to me, is how wholesome they are. They are sort of spambots doing their own things, they never approached me, and it's not algorithmed.

Been getting this sense lately that the fediverse may be thinning out a bit, and in parallel getting a sense people I know are finally jumping to "bluesky" in numbers.

Trying to figure out exactly at what point I decide I'm willing to create a feed over there. My position has been "I'll post there when I don't have to use their servers to do it", but I continue to suspect this will literally never happen because their protocol is designed to look like federation without being ever federatable

The taxi service in Toronto is called "Beck" and they have a ride-ordering app which every time I use it I am just amazed by how bad it is and how it has never got any better over the many years I've been living here (and in fact seems to have got a little worse)

I always of course have a lot of time to think about this as I stand for 10-20 minutes by the side of the road with the app from the moment I tap order showing the cab is "1 minute" away, unable to use my phone or the app will crash

Bigshellevent,
@Bigshellevent@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc so, I found that unusable apps in very large very wealthy corps seems to be the standard. Google Calendar don't allow easy port of calendars. Youtube/Netflix are trashfires. KFC is confused that people may want to eat something other than the three nuggets pack that's not available anyway. Amazon scrolling will result in accidental buying, and won't stop selling fridges to you for years if you bought a fridge.

I suspect there are lucrative reasons for these, but also ????

Opinion: Ad networks, apps, and operating systems should have big switches that should let people fully opt out of ads for addictive substances/activities such as alcohol and gambling.

Twice in the last week opening DoorDash has resulted in this popup. I do not drink alcohol.

Bigshellevent,
@Bigshellevent@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc because I'm not cynical , I'd like to suggest that these ads (gambling, alcohol, gaming, sexual etc etc) are absolutely not targeted based on if you have googled for how to address your addiction whatsoever

The new text for "Unlisted" in the Mastodon.social compose box is so bad that I'd ask if it would have been better to just remove the feature.

I saw some Github discussion about this redesign, most of which lead to a very large number of people objecting to the PR's original text of "Low-key public". Although I guess this feedback was listened to, it doesn't seem to have really helped.

Some changes in the new compose are, I think, on balance for the better, but this one is really distracting

Bigshellevent,
@Bigshellevent@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc huh i thought the selling point is NO algorithm at all? Like you can't even opt in algorithm?

Bigshellevent,
@Bigshellevent@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc turned out what I understood as 'public" is not what .social meant as "public", and what I understood as "no algorithm " is also not entirely true.

Anyway this is my last public post here.
