Jon Stewart Returns to ‘Daily Show’ as Monday Host, Executive Producer (variety.com)

After scuttling a months-long search for a new host, the Paramount Global network said it had enlisted Jon Stewart, who presided over the late-night mainstay’s most popular era, to serve as its host on Monday nights throughout the 2024 election cycle and to run the program. He is expected to oversee the program through 2025....

After scuttling a months-long search for a new host

Incompetent searchers, they already had Roy Wood Jr’s phone number.

I have few good things to say about the man, but I appreciate that Trump is using his campaign to highlight this administrations accomplishments.

Alabama calls nitrogen execution method 'painless' and 'humane,' but critics raise doubts (apnews.com)

Alabama, unless stopped by the courts, intends to strap Kenneth Eugene Smith to a gurney Thursday and use a gas mask to replace breathable air with nitrogen, depriving him of oxygen, in the nation’s first execution attempt with the method....

Did they get the idea from the Sarco Pod (AKA the Swiss Suicide Booth)? I know inert gas deaths aren’t a new concept but it seems like an odd coincidence since the pod was just making news a couple years ago.

This moment has lived rent free in my head for most of my life:

Later I learned the guy playing the punk was Kirk Randolph Thatcher, a model maker at ILM and an AP on Trek IV.

When Google Assistant first launched it couldn’t do anything, not even basic arithmetic, without App & Search History enabled in you Google account. So I never used it and now I forget it exists.

If they go to most mega churches, their pastor makes Trump look grounded and intelligent and they’ve never actually heard anything from the new testament.

How to opt out of the privacy nightmare that comes with new Hondas (sherwood.news)

There are lots of reasons to want to shut off your car’s data collection. The Mozilla Foundation has called modern cars “surveillance machines on wheels” and ranked them worse than any other product category last year, with all 25 car brands they reviewed failing to offer adequate privacy protections....

I’m in need of a new (to me) car soon and this is stopping me from even starting the shopping process. Now I know I can cross new Hondas off my list of consideration (I can’t stand to have notifications I can’t turn off). But that still leaves a lot research into information the car companies don’t want me to have and which I don’t want to have to do.

Maybe I’ll buy an old Crown Vic. They drive forever and don’t look like any of the cars that local police currently use.

I could also be misremembering the details, it was 10+ years ago and insurance made me take it to the dealer for body work. I remember it was a lot of the front end though.

Edit: I suddenly remembered the details. When the bumper crumpled it broke the clips on the quarter panels that attached it to the frontend assembly. So they had to replace the quarter panels too.

Or the code that represents pi (or similar) has a recursion bug. The real value for pi is supposed to be succinct, but that damn angle tracing algorithm gets stuck in a computation loop. That ticket has been open for 3.2 billion years, but we’re getting to it.

The main thing that should get adopted everywhere is having fuses or breakers in the plugs themselves. That would eliminate a lot of fires caused by putting too much current through small wires.

I also like the outlets (like in the UK and probably other places) that won’t unlock the mains slots until there’s a ground pin in place.

It’s been 25 years for me so things have changed. I also didn’t go the whole width of the US. But at the time it was pretty great. One of those life adventures that I’ve thought about ever since.

I went from Barstow, Ca to Chicago and back at age 18 as a graduation trip with a friend in coach. We spent most of our time (awake and asleep) in the dining and observation cars people watching and talking to folks. There was a whole car of Girl Scouts in uniform for the return trip, which felt a bit like being in Wes Anderson movie… or occasionally The Shining.

We’d jump out at stops just to say we’d been to the city where the stop was. Usually that just meant a quick lap around the train station then back on board, but it was still fun as an 18yo. On the way back we got stuck in the Sierra Nevadas (for only about 6 hours) after the train struck an elk. We were nearish enough to Donner pass that we got to hear some of the older girl scouts (still in uniform) chat about who they’d eat first. I think of that every time I see a cookie stand.

Wow, this is a blast from my past. I grew up in Portland’s broadcast range in the late 80s, so I watched Bob all the time. I specifically remember this outfit. I’m pretty sure it got some reuse.

Lemmy is a little slow sometimes, but I’ve started to have the opposite problem on Mastodon. I need to weed out some hashtags or something because I can’t keep up anymore.
