I make software, most of which is games these days.

When I'm not doing that you might find me out exploring in my old Jeep.

@elaterite I put PureOS on my old OnePlus5. Sadly, it doesn't run well enough to be a daily driver. I'm considering switching to a degoogled version of Android soon.

A few years ago I bought a new car, my first new car since 2002 and two things amazed me. 1) Backup cameras. 2) Adaptive cruse control. How did I live without these two things.

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer back up cameras are amazing but I forget all my vehicles even have cruise control, adaptive and regular. Yeah, I'm the guy with his foot on the gas for 6 hour drives.

People go to Stack Overflow because the docs and error messages are garbage. TLDR exists because the docs and error messages are garbage. People ask ChatGPT for help because the docs and error messages are garbage. We are going to lose a generation of competence and turn programming into call-and-response glyph-engine supplicancy because we let a personality cult that formed around the PDP-11 in the 1970s convince us that it was pure and good that docs and error messages are garbage.

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@hyc no, people prefer TLDR and chatGPT because they need to get something done in a timely manner and don't have a free hour(s) to sort through poorly worded, often outdated documentation.

It is time.

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gedeonm I'm not sure what it is about TOTK but it just isn't holding me. I bought it on launch day, played through the ship in the sky and just kinda went...eh, neat. Put it down and have had no desire to pick it up again. I honestly think it's just so open ended that my brain kinda turns to mush when I play it. I can totally see why people like the building mechanic but I find it tedious and annoying.

For context, I've beaten every console Zelda since the original came out on NES in the 80s.

Another day, another day in the salt mines. I mean the fun fun salt mines not the real salt mines where to mine salt for pennies. OK, maybe I do mean those salt mines.

@grumpygamer curious what platforms you're targeting for this?

If you break a barrel around someone's house or in their shop they get mad at you and won't give you quests or do business with you for a bit. That always bothered me in Zelda.

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer there's a house in Wind Waker where the owner will fine you for breaking his pots.

was updating my blog database for some broken links, and I wrote this 12 years ago (so take it with a grain of salt), and I still think it's a bit relevant, but at this point in time the race to the bottom was not yet quite on F2P but on the $0.99 mark.

https://www.david-amador.com/2011/05/why-cheap-games-is-hurt-gaming/

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink mobile development is a hellscape of f2p and shovelware. It's incredibly difficult to stand out but the potential customer base is more massive than all consoles and PCs put together...literally everyone has a phone in their pocket. If you can grab enough attention to gain some momentum, the rewards can be huge.

I used Visual Studio for many years before I discovered the New Window command which lets you have two views on the same file. Very useful.

Last year I bought PlayMaker and played a bit with it, I liked it. I see that even some famous games used it, sometimes as a prototyping tool. I thinking about using it in the next project.

Hey #unity #gamedev do you use it?

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim the first game I ever completed on my own was made with nothing but playmaker. It's good for doing basic things but once your systems get more complicated it can be challenging to keep things clean.

My thoughts on the new jetbrains UI in a nutshell.

(if you haven't seen it, it's your standard modern "we hid everything 3 levels deep in menus to make it look pretty!" modern design)

https://www.jetbrains.com/clion/new-ui/?utm_source=product&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=new_ui_release

As a long, LONG term customer I swear I'll drop them in an instance and write my own IDE if I have to if this ever stops being optional....

ClutchAbuse,
@ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@raptor85 it's a design trend I wish would fucking die. Professional tools aren't run on phones. They're run on multiple display setups with lots of real estate.

    I tell them i'm actually stressed out and terrified to the point that I can't sleep.

    ClutchAbuse,
    @ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @bitinn speed limit information is displayed on most built in GPSs in newish cars these days. It's all readily available and certainly a massive company like Apple can afford it. They don't do the road surveys themselves though.

    @psychicparrot42 the early 2000s was a funny time music wise. Some of the best electronic music was coming out but at the same time Nu metal was everywhere and absolutely ruining the metal scene.

    I did a quick calculation and I've spent close to 98,000 hours making video games. Making video games! Not curing cancer or establishing world peace, but making video games.

    @grumpygamer I struggle with this too. I met a young civil engineer at a bar one night and he said he regretted not getting into software. I told him the bridges and infrastructure he designed will be used for decades while my games will be forgotten after one playthrough.

    I am very tired of Alphabet and have been actively trying to stop using their products for a while now. The biggest hitch in this is that I've been on Android phones since the G1. I own several iPhones including a 14 pro for dev purposes so it's not like I'm afraid of iOS, I just can't stand it.

    I really wish there were more than 2 viable phone options these days. Or am I missing something?

    ClutchAbuse,
    @ClutchAbuse@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @AngryAnt I did that way back around 2010 with cyanogen and the like. It was fun. But I always felt like my devices were never quite stable enough to be daily drivers with custom ROMs. Maybe they've gotten better?
