@Alice well, if that was true, I would expect you to post a lot of pictures of the event. And I would hold against you if you didn't!

I think Toyota was right all along.

It’s an unpopular opinion among EV purists, but I think hybrids will reduce a lot more carbon emissions than BEVs, for the simple reason that way more people can switch. Even without access to charging outlets, hybrids are far more efficient thanks to their regenerative braking. With access to outlets, they are as good as EVs within their electric range, which will account for most of the daily commutes of their owners, and all with far smaller batteries and better costs of ownership than BEVs.

The way to eliminate emissions due to personal transportation is not to put people in BEVs. It’s to eliminate commutes and massively invest in (electrified) public transportation.

“Hybrid vs. Electric Cars: Why Hybrids Make More Sense”

https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/hybrid-vs-electric-why-hybrids-make-more-sense/

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@drahardja just to point out that BEVs also have regenerative braking. So the claim that hybrids are more efficient because of that is false. Additionally, when talking about plugin hybrids, if they're not plugged in and recharged, then the ICE will have to power the car and charge the battery very often, which is highly inefficient.

It would be awesome to eliminate commutes, it would have a massive impact. Even if it wouldn't solve the problem. But that's not feasible for many reasons.

It's been years since I actively wrote anything for Postcards from Cutty and I think I basically can't do it. At least, I can't write anything anyone would want to read, in a traditional form.

However, I can info-dump random technical and world-building details, and maybe I should just do that and not worry about telling a traditional story.

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@isaackuo have you ever considered pairing up with someone with storytelling skills? I know what you mean. The fact that one has a good idea for a story doesn't imply that he'll know how to tell the story. I've written stories myself, but in the end they were all probably just very boring. Writing is not for everyone.

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@isaackuo well, now that I think of it, there was one text I once wrote which left someone excited. Some guy commented on it and said he wanted to create a computer game based on it. Never happened, though.

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@isaackuo well, of all the blog posts I ever wrote, if I was ever asked to point one which could inspire an RPG, that one would probably be the last I would choose. It was a rant about how our reality is dominated by uncertainty and how we have no option but to accept the limitations of our capacity to learn the truth about whatever. E.g. criminal trials. Was the defendant convicted actually responsible for the crime? One can only hope. It was written in Portuguese so no point sharing it.

The Scarcity of the Long Term

The chief hurdle in constructing a Death Star is not the energy, materials, or even knowledge needed. It’s the long time needed. A society can change their mind mid-way over centuries, and simply move on. The galaxy is likely strewn with abandoned Half-a-Death Stars.

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@tkinias @cstross @nyrath well, the justification for the longevity of the project is that the requirement didn't go away. The sea had to be kept at bay then and just be kept at bay now. Another such scenario would be the building of an ark prompted by a planet-killer threat detected centuries beforehand. Although given the short-sighted nature of electoral cycles, it would probably be very difficult to keep the momentum of such a project.

It’s interesting how often sci-fi writers expected the arts to be out of reach for robots.

A YouTube video of Detective Spooner questioning a positronic robot in the Movie “I, Robot”, released in 2004, and set in the year 2035.

Spooner: You are just a machine, an imitation of life. Can a robot write a symphony? Can a robot turn a canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?

@dgar that actually reminds me of an interview I recently heard. The interviewer asked a Portuguese comedian what he thought of AI being able to produce comic material. He replied that there were already some examples around and they were fairly poor. However, he added, it's not like there is a lack of bad human comedians around. So, AI could soon become a competition for bad comedians.

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@dgar and funny enough, Iam currently reading "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert A. Heinlein. At the start of the book, the main character works on the maintenance of a computer which has acquired self awareness. One of the computer's pursuits in "life" is to learn to write good jokes. He outputs them by the hundreds and asks Manuel and later other characters in the book to rate them as funny or not. Eventually the author seems to have forgotten about that pursuit.

@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@dgar I haven't finished the book, so maybe we will learn more about it further ahead.

It's like that embarrassing thing where you go to the supermarket and buy a six-pack of large free-range eggs because you want to make a tortilla and when you get home they start hatching and the baby velociraptors eat all the pancetta you were going to add to it and look at you with googly eyes like, "mooom! hungry!" and now you have a kitchen velociraptor infestation and they love you and refuse to move out

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@cstross but that's still no reason to just dump them in the middle of the street where they can be run over by a car, or mistake a little human for food. You have to be responsible. At most l, if you don't want the responsibility, you need to take them to your local velodoption institution so that they can find a new home for them. DO THE RIGHT THING!

Disputatore,
@Disputatore@masto.pt avatar

@FeralRobots @cstross I'm sorry, I can't condone that. Capture and sterilise? Absolutely. Release? Absolutely not. Velociraptors will form a pack and, before you know it, they'll be stealing armoured cars and robbing banks. We have to live with them, sure, but there's no benefit in being naive.
