I've completed "Step Counter" - Day 21 - Advent of Code 2023 https://adventofcode.com/2023/day/21

Oh polynomials - I dimly remember you from high school. This problem required me to reinvent calculus. Look for Leo's Principia coming soon.

@leo Funny thing, never learned calculus in school. Eventually I had to teach myself calculus.

Don't remember much of it, if any, which is a shame.

So, @thurrott ... Windows 10 has started giving me notices a couple times a day that I should switch to Adobe Acrobat as the default for PDFs. I've had Acrobat for as long as it's existed -- but that was a bit much. I uninstalled it.

I'm still getting those notices. Thoughts?

How do you balance the needs of the person you are with, with your own needs?

Where do you set hard boundaries and why?

This can be in any relationship romantic, family, friends.

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

@bookstodon

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@skaeth @shauna @bookstodon Yeah. Heck of it is, I like Seth and I like Scott, and sort-of know them from when we were all on Podiobooks. If you like Their Sort Of Thing, I'd recommend either.

So I feel kinda bad, like letting down a friend. But those particular things of theirs just weren't for me.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@shauna @skaeth @bookstodon I understand completely. I read almost all of Seth Harwood's books, mostly crime novels but not all. Then I hit one that was way too violent for me and I stopped and never went back. He's a good author and a good narrator, but hey, it's crime...

Loved Scott Sigler's Galactic Football League series (SF), and I think he's got a new one out now. Pretty violent, but made sense in the context. Tried to read other works of his -- SF horror. Couldn't.

If you're wondering why I'm up at such a silly hour for the US Midwest... Remember @pluralistic Cory Doctorow's book "Eastern Standard Tribe?" Turns out my bioclock is syched to the Olduvai Gorge, as I figured out the other day. So far as my body is concerned it's 3:22 pm.

Maybe I should move to Tanzania?

Podcast recommendations, lemme look:

Words For Granted - specifically an etymology podcast

And... Looked through my 300 or so subscriptions, couldn't find others by title. I recall @grammargirl Mignon Fogarty's podcast was often good for that, but I can't recall the title. Others cover word usage piecemeal sometimes, so no help there.

Betting Ms Fogarty would have better suggestions for podcasts about changes in word usage, nu?

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@grammargirl @bookstodon So, how do you feel about "adult" as a verb? 🙂

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@SteveClough @riggbeck @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon I feel your pain. On the other hand, I listen to several podcasts that discuss language and old words. Don't know for sure how many words used to mean something else, but if someone determined it was over half of 'em, I can't say I'd be surprised. Or amazed, per the old Noah Webster joke. 🙂

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@grammargirl @bookstodon I read the LinkedIn article over, and I respect his views. But a million years ago someone pointed out dictionaries don't contain definitions (they're not definitive...), they contain usages. As with most things I "know," I got it from one source and don't recall what the source was. 🙂

I have no idea what’s the breed of this dog but we just call it ‘Zo Ui’ (Zo Dog). Alert, great friend (of course), no manicure or pedicure needed, zero-maintenance cost, will eat whatever the family eats, walks for miles with you when you go hunting or for a stroll in the jungle. If tired, will lie down on the leaves (stomach side up), takes rest and then catch up with you (as this guy did). Most of all, super curious.

I ask for the ‘breed’ because they’re not the same stray dogs we find in Indian cities - has this typical curly tail, is short, and the ‘real’ ones have this brown coat.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@Deus Well, that's a good accomplishment. I'd always understood Pariah as something of an insult, but there's likely more going on there than I'd know about. "Indie dog" sounds better. Plus now you should get him a leather hat, jacket, and whip. 🙂

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@Deus Maybe what they call a Yeller dog? The original breed of Dog?

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@Deus I must admit I'd be tempted to get a Rafeiro do Alentejo, the breed of that dog that lived 31 years. Not a universal characteristic of the breed, but I'm sorely tired of outliving dogs. Lovely dog, too.

Currently the "Shadow Vanguard" series by Tom Dublink Michael Anderle and Craig Martelle on my . It's part of that Kutherian collection.

SF, fairly plausible, except the spymaster named Nathan Lowell. Where do these SF folks get these crazy names?

Was deeply engaged in a difficult conversation today when a book caught my attention across the room. “Is that Unmasking Autism? I read that earlier this year.” It was an optional opening for optional disclosure. It changed the questions he felt comfortable asking, changed how I provided education, and it ended be a deeply satisfying and helpful exchange. Today was a real win. @bookstodon
