@enobacon well then she can lie because you have to apply a factor of safety anyway

Hmm, even 5 feet of sea rise only takes out one naval base and a few farm fields in Ventura County. I would have thought more of the Oxnard plain was at risk. https://coast.noaa.gov/slr/#/layer/slr/5/-13260729.027868235/4045008.5481997402/14/satellite/none/0.8/2050/interHigh/midAccretion

@ai6yr Miami will have issues long before because it's so flat there's nowhere for stormwater to go. The whole drainage area is just interconnected ponds that distribute water. Every rise in tailwater elevation would take out a lot of capacity for storage and worsen flooding during rain events. Their wastewater plant must be a fun problem, too.

I forgot what a nightmare filling the forms directly is for a dyscalculic (even the 1040 form).

May everyone at Intuit and their accomplices who've fought the IRS simply sending us all invoices rot in hell.

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@meganL Honestly, doing taxes is intimidating as hell for people who don't have math issues I cannot imagine how tough it must be to do it alone with dyscalculia. We pay for "peace of mind" protection through H&R Block (a privilege, I realize) just because of the fear of making a mistake.

It is with great irony that the internet is reminding me that on this day six years ago my then-6yo rode the 2-mi journey home from school alone for the first time, but now that he's in middle school he gets driven because 4-lane arterial roads and greater risks from larger vehicles and worse driving.

Autocentricity is the cops stopping a Latino kid who's truant and making him wait on the sidewalk for a parent to pick him up half a mile away from a bus stop.

Community policing is walking him back to school one block away.

@ai6yr As someone who unwittingly bought a house from an avid DIYer, please do not DIY. The HVAC techs were amazed yesterday looking at my house, and one of them is old enough to have a 97yo mom. He has Seen Some Stuff. (I have an HVAC duct that runs OUTSIDE MY HOUSE. It's a wonder that when it's 0 deg outside it's as high as 63 in the room served by that duct.)

As I told NBC News:

“If we’re serious about reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, we have to be serious about reducing transportation emissions, and in order to do that we have to address the main source of those emissions, which come from cars and trucks on highways."

“And to that extent, we need to rethink how much we want to expand highways.”

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@atthenius @davidzipper The Key bridge carried less traffic than a local street. It carred ~4,000 trucks a day, but I haven't been able to determine how many of those were Hazmat trucks that can't use the two tunnels. Does the bridge even need to be rebuilt? https://www.fleetowner.com/safety/article/21285334/how-baltimores-francis-scott-key-bridge-collapse-affects-truck-traffic-and-fleet-operations

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@guigsy @atthenius @davidzipper I think you have two zeros too many in your estimate. There is zero business case for rebuilding the bridge, but we don't do business case analyses for highways. We assume they are a positive net good when it's clear the opposite is the case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_U.S._public_works_projects

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@atthenius @guigsy @davidzipper It's two orders of magnitude off on the cost to replace the bridge, and then maybe still a factor of five. More like $800m to $4bn range. E.g. $1.5bn for the new Goethals Bridge.

@ai6yr @glightly I rode my Ebike in sustained 35mph winds once (on Turbo), it was a wild ride. I've ridden a road bike in 20mph sustained winds. It's tough into the wind, but an eerie quiet when you're going 20mph with the wind at your back. It's worth the effort going out to experience it coming back, but not vice versa. 🤣

I seriously wonder about who is making some of these editorial choices at the New York Times. Big email about the US economy slowing down because of lack of population growth.

NY Times: :"Since its inception, the U.S. has relied on population growth to keep its economy pumping....But a world with a shrinking population is very different from what humans have ever seen. Since the Industrial Revolution, countries have leveraged high population growth to bolster their economies and government programs. Soon, they will no longer be able to do so."

HayiWena,
@HayiWena@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr Life is better since I blocked the NYT out of my life. The US has always relied on immigration, not birth rates. The NYT Opinion page is just a propaganda and misinformation vehicle.

When the 13yo girl texts you from her vacation on the opposite side of the country to ask you to finish her bike, you finish the damn bike even though your knee dislocated half way through. I cannot get the front derailleur to work so she's gonna have a 1x and learn to increase her cadence from about 40.

Front view of a road bike in a repair stand. There is black bar tape on the handlebars.

HayiWena,

@enobacon I took the cockpit off the Fuji my then 12yo (now 17yo) frankenbiked together from parts in the bike coop bins with his dad. It's 2x9 brifters that may or may not match that were used before they got wrecked a few times by the 12yo. I think the cranks and derailleurs are from the Bridgestone but the cassette and shifters are from the Fuji. The derailleur can move but the shifter doesn't have the pull to get it over there. We ordered brifters from this century. 🤞

@enobacon No, not a futon, there's an unlabeled switch. The latest delight from this terrible place is a weird, very loud, low clicking that goes off every 10-15 min and lasts about 30-45 seconds. Whichever research team we select tomorrow better do a fantastic job of this research to make this hell worthwhile. (It's a project to help standardize how bike & ped facilities are encoded so it's easier to aggregate data and do statewide planning.)
