I'm so spoilt. Tried to get some technical work done on the road yesterday, with a "mere" 16" laptop screen, and mostly failed. I've been so used to my 32" monitor, which, checking the calculator, has 4x the display area. How did I ever get any code written on my first (8bit) computer with best-in-class resolution of 320x200 pixels? Using an analog TV as monitor?

And now Apple promises an "unlimited canvas" in their marketing. Oohhhhh ....

"Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early users. ‘We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run,’ a top exec told employees."

This is how you do marketing, take notice. We need to get our act together, otherwise Meta will be the default marketing department for the Fediverse, and that would be ... suboptimal.

@coachtony :

We need an effort to actually have a message and consistently tell it.

Evidence the does not: the verge article doesn't even have an "on the other hand, other app developers think ..."

Starting a Matrix group for people interested in Fediverse marketing -- let's see whether we find enough people/talent to do something about this. Would love help from you all: -marketing:matrix.org

Please articulate this point of view on 10x better experiences in the very widely.

Also, you probably know we are building a Fediverse Developer Network one of whose goals it is to connect the developers whose apps need to work together extremely well for exceptional cross-app experiences. https://fedidevs.org/

@coachtony A Mastodon panel or a Fediverse panel?

IMHO a Fediverse panel is more interesting, because the unique proposition of the Fediverse is that it is an open network that any person / any app can participate, and every app adds incremental values -- instead of just one project / org.

We showcased some of this diversity at the last https://fediforum.org/ -- reach out to some of those developers for a panel?

Also remarkable that apparently changed the name of the device and the OS at the last minute. The developer videos still call it -- a somewhat more natural name than which is blander and could stand for all sorts of things. Apparently the thought "let's not put it into an existing category" won out. And the focus on "vision" for is also non-obvious if it's an device.

What's a mere $12b in customer funds moved to the CEO's personal company?

The brazenness is pretty astounding. What were these guys thinking would happen?

Upon reflection, to build successful apps for the , we need to unlearn a lot about apps that we took for granted since, idk, maybe we started programming for the web, almost 30 years ago. Some multi-window pre-web PC/mac apps might be a closer point of departure ... but in any case, not close at all.

Of course Apple's message for devs is "it's all easy, just a few more APIs beyond what you do on iPhone". But to actually leverage the new medium, that's a different matter entirely.

Guessing on the timeline for :

If VisionPro will only be available early next year, they aren’t even remotely finished with engineering it right now. (So they don’t actually know right now what it will cost them to produce it either.)

Sales will slowly ramp starting Q1 next year, US only.

Which means the earliest possible time for a non-pro, consumer priced model is the holiday season 2024. That’s the optimistic case. Before that, no sales volume whatsoever.

“Principles of spatial design.” from Apple’s WWDC. I feel like I landed on a different planet.

Watch this, look at he software around you, and weep.

It’s not the headset that’s disruptive. It’s the possibilities it opens for design.

@lauren I don't think I'm influenced very much by hype here. I've been wanting to have 3D UIs since I dabbled with VRML in the 90s. The Quest by and large is a useless device (I own one).

What I see Apple has done is, one by one, knocked out the reasons why I think the Quest is useless. (There may be other reasons that are obstacles that I don't see yet, I can only talk about what I know now.) But how they have done it is something Meta largely can't copy. That's why I said "toast".

"I believe the most compelling use case is for work" . "To put it even more strongly, the Vision Pro is, I suspect, the future of the Mac."

I don't think he's wrong. Time will tell, but not a bad take.

https://stratechery.com/2023/apple-vision/

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@MattD Yeah, but I don't think he's right on that point. Apple long time ago must have decided that they don't do "social" themselves, instead they provide platforms on top of which others like Meta can do social. And there is nothing in what I've seen that says that isn't possible with the Vision product.

On the other hand, given that Meta is now committed to their own platform, that might create a really interesting opportunity for somebody else, leveraging Apple!
