"Meta is talking to celebrities like Oprah and the Dalai Lama about being early users. ‘We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run,’ a top exec told employees."

This is how you do marketing, take notice. We need to get our act together, otherwise Meta will be the default marketing department for the Fediverse, and that would be ... suboptimal.

Fediverse marketing cannot be left to Meta. See above.

@J12t @jon @coachtony @mike @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton We should really have an all hands on deck fediverse meeting to discuss the potential outcomes for this situation.

@liaizon Say more about what should happen in such a conversation in your view. Agenda?

liaizon,
@liaizon@wake.st avatar

@J12t I think the most worrying thing is the state of the protocol/spec and what happens the second Meta "supports it" cause whatever they support will become calcified in a way that is even more entrenched then the strange way that the protocol is already flavored by mastodons usage of it

Zero concern. They will fail in the same way they failed with newsletters. That was the same playbook too.

IMO, the only thing we should be optimizing for is passionate use cases. They have zero passion.

@coachtony :

We need an effort to actually have a message and consistently tell it.

Evidence the does not: the verge article doesn't even have an "on the other hand, other app developers think ..."

Starting a Matrix group for people interested in Fediverse marketing -- let's see whether we find enough people/talent to do something about this. Would love help from you all: -marketing:matrix.org

Sort of related, can we host a Mastodon panel at Medium Day Aug 12?

mike,

@coachtony @J12t @liaizon @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton I think that's a great idea, Tony.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@coachtony A Mastodon panel or a Fediverse panel?

IMHO a Fediverse panel is more interesting, because the unique proposition of the Fediverse is that it is an open network that any person / any app can participate, and every app adds incremental values -- instead of just one project / org.

We showcased some of this diversity at the last https://fediforum.org/ -- reach out to some of those developers for a panel?

@liaizon @jon @mike @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton

jdp23,

@J12t @coachtony @liaizon @jon
Strongly agreed that a fediverse panel would be much more interesting! There's a lot more energy and innovation on other projects than on Mastodon right now ... and reddit's shenanigans are kicking off another wave (or at least mini-wave, tbd) that will mostly go to non-Mastodon software.

@J12t @liaizon @jon @mike @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton

I think a possible message might be some variant of "I'm having a good time."

Let's short circuit the horse race. That's meaningless. FB is going to have a ton of vanity stats and names. So is that bluesky thing.

But this is a place where I consistently have good and interesting conversations.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@coachtony @J12t @liaizon @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton Yeah, the engagement on Mastodon is an order of magnitude better/higher quality than what I experience today on either Twitter or Bluesky.

liaizon,
@liaizon@wake.st avatar

@mike @coachtony @J12t @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton this engagement is 100% because this place is not dictated by ad tech algorithms but by human first networks of people who care. The basis of everything Meta has done shows they do not care about humanity. They are only interested in control and monetization of our every thought.

Cassandra,

@J12t

I can help. I don't know much about tech, but I know marketing, and I understand what we need.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@coachtony @liaizon @J12t @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton

Yes, FB is very good at cloning other people's work and I fully expect that to happen here. Tony's right that focusing on passionate use cases is now critical for anyone who wants to be successful in the Fediverse. The number one way to compete with a cloner is to innovate and build wonderful user experiences that have passion and blow users away.

mike,
@mike@flipboard.social avatar

@coachtony @liaizon @J12t @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton The fact that FB is likely to become a primary marketing voice for the Fediverse is real. This has pros and cons to give some thought to.

I saw this movie before when I was at Netscape. Microsoft did an incredibly effective job marketing the Internet to the world, effectively echoing and magnifying Netscape's own talking points. They also copied everything we built so they became the face of the internet.

liaizon,
@liaizon@wake.st avatar

@mike @coachtony @J12t @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton stepping out in front of this before they make their next move and making a collective statement that this space is made from the bottom up by humans and it is not for the taking by corporations might be a positive step in the right direction. Not to say that they wont still do whatever they are going to do, but some signal that action will be taken if they move in the wrong direction is needed.

@coachtony @liaizon @J12t @jon @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton Up to this point, much of the mojo has been about creating "open clones" of the walled gardens. Those days are rapidly coming to an end.

Ultimately to grow to mainstream use, we need to create experiences that are 10X better than what the walled gardens have done. Those experiences should heavily be enabled by and leverage the power of the open social web.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mike Hear, hear :-)

Please articulate this point of view on 10x better experiences in the very widely.

Also, you probably know we are building a Fediverse Developer Network one of whose goals it is to connect the developers whose apps need to work together extremely well for exceptional cross-app experiences. https://fedidevs.org/

@J12t @jon @coachtony @stevetex @mmasnick @Gargron @haubles @anildash @manton

One of the things that FB is doing here is focusing on attracting creators and influencers which is smart.

In the short run, this is likely to be a very positive development for the at a time when growth has slowed and is attracting users with large audiences to a different protocol.

That said, in the long run there will be high risk of FB undermining the core principles of the Fediverse.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mike This.

can have huge benefits for the in the shorter term, and has huge risks in the longer term, in particularly if they aren't actively managed on a network level, not just individual-company level.

Which is why I'm suggesting to have the people who worry about that kind of thing stick their heads together in a marketing group.

@J12t @jdp23 this is where the centralization helps them. They have power and money to sway the public. It’s a genius move on their part. As I’ve thought about it more and more, their AT integration is probably a move to become the largest federation instantly and then have outsized control over the network.

This is going to be a mess.

FinchHaven,

Someone really needs to ask the exactly why the "tonyg" @ Mastodon dot Social clearly identifiable in the screen shot has denied that the posts shown are from him

Which would be forgery, I would believe

Where did the Verge get the original webp image?
