I truly hate to say this as I absolutely adore Star Trek.
But I’m trying to watch the first episode of the final season of Discovery.
45 minutes in and I’m horrified at what I’m watching.
I’ve had major ups and downs with this particular series.
But the non stop out of place, way overdone action sequences.
The constant unfunny quips, the off putting direction and camera work.
It’s all just too much for me.
Damn.
This is the complete opposite of what I love about Star Trek. 😲

@alienmelon This makes me wonder if I'm even a solo dev because I have other people's music in my projects. I'm afraid I'm just not able to make any music I like or want to use.

Been doing tooling work to support Toxa's upgrade of ZGB to a cross-platform engine that adds MegaDuck, SMS and Game Gear support (to the existing GB/GBC capability).

It's mostly Makefile, build automation and converting utilities from python. Not particularly exciting or glamorous, but can be satisfying when the output of a converted utility matches the reference output without too much struggle. :)

Jeltron,
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

@bbbbbr Any idea if these changes will make their way to GB Studio? That would be incredible.

@nhsactivistrn Speaking as an American, this is not hyperbole. Even if you aren't sick you can still face bills of over $5000 for basic tests. People die because they can't afford preventative care.

Kriby‘s Dreamland 2 is a very nice platformer. I do not yet understand all the mechanics (what’s up with the minigame at the end of a level?) but it seems extremely well done. I notice that Nintendo originals are all very high quality whereas 3rd party games often are lacking in many ways or badly ported from other platforms. Nintendo really seems to design games for the Gameboy first.

Jeltron,
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

@root42 This is one of the best games on the Gameboy. That mini game at the end of the level you have to press A when the platform is at its very lowest point and it will bounce you higher for better rewards.

After hooking up my PS3 which had been boxed up for 7 years, I ended up playing Ridge Racer 7 all night last night, so I had to look up some articles...

@OutofPrintArchive I was a huge fan of R4 but when replaying it recently I started getting a little disappointed with the number of tracks. I guess one way to get more tracks is to play rage racer! It would be cool if someone hacked these tracks into R4.

@root42 I was playing this game in an emulator and for some reason the save states didn't properly save my treasures at some point. It was heartbreaking.

We are just wrapping up Unearthed and I'm doing some final testing in DMG mode. One of the things I'm most proud of is that the art translates to the DMG palette. It's not easy to do with such a colorful puzzle game but the Game Boy pocket is such a nice handheld that I'd be pretty sad if it couldn't run on one.

Here it's running in the 'gb' mode on the funnyplaying fgpa.

Jeltron, to random
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

I got an fgpa Gameboy from funny playing and I'm pretty impressed with it. Same exact form factor as a gbc but with a lithium ion battery, usb-c charging and a nice screen. Not too hard to assemble either. A comparable modded Gameboy would cost over $100 more and likely have a smaller screen.

-Oh wow! A two part Wii U retrospective that's over 4 hours long! click

/Continues to shit on the system and it's games as well as the Wii from the very beginning and just doesn't let up,

/me mumbles, dislikes, closes tab and unsubscribes from channel, while continuing to curse underneath my breath for quite a bit longer.

Again, why the hell put in all that time and "effort" just to shit on something over and over?

Jeltron,
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

@OutofPrintArchive @imalcolm @COMPU73E I thought splatoon started on switch? I had a wii u and loved the games but hated the hardware. The controller stopped holding a charge. The white plastic got yellow and sticky, the power cable to the controller was too thin and fragile... All of my issues were with the controller.

Have you ever heard of the game Tablut? My journey to discovering it started when I was visiting a viking exhibit in Montreal.

It is part of a family of ancient strategy games called 'Tafl' that have variations in many countries. It has Welsh versions, Norwegian versions, Irish versions...

I made a digital version of the game board and exported it as an APK so people can play it on their phone or tablet with a friend.

UX designers who eliminated the filesystem from user consciousness in name of simplicity ruined the world and are morally culpable for shriveling minds of children who are unable to tackle the challenges of today thanks to a choice sold as advocacy for the user but was ultimately motivated by control of a disempowered customer.

Jeltron,
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity I teach college game art classes and it is true that younger people often need to be taught to use a file system. I also think that the Google map style waypoint systems in modern games make it so that people are getting worse at holding spatial awareness in their heads.

Jeltron, to art
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

One of my favorite things in art which is hard to replicate in games is a feeling of looseness.

In games things often need to be heavily controlled & what works for a static image can look strange in motion. I think it's even harder at a low resolution where every pixel counts.

@gbstudiocentral is running a low-stakes pixel art jam & I think I'm going to make my goal to make something that looks loose.

Check out the jam here: https://itch.io/jam/gbpixelartjam23

Jeltron, to pixelart
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

When I first started messing with pixel art I was not as into it and I preferred just sketching freehand. I think there's actually a name for this style but I forget what it is called.

While purists may not call it 'real' pixel art, I would like to do something in this style at some point.

Some of the cutscene art in my horror game Decline was started this way but I ended up touching it up because the low res of the Gameboy makes it hard to pull off.

Ah damnit. Spent an hour in the character creator in Starfield just before I have to leave for work.
Finally finished. Gave my character a name and clicked finish. Then the game crashes. 🫤

Jeltron,
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

@OutofPrintArchive @greenvahn The first crash I ever experienced was Metroid Prime 2 but it was also the only crash I ever experienced on GameCube. I remember playing fallout 3 on 360 and the sheer number and severity of the bugs was mind boggling for a console game. I wonder if it is possible that Starfield is more stable on pc?

Jeltron,
@Jeltron@pocketpixels.club avatar

@OutofPrintArchive @helligbird I hope so too and I hope the game lives up to your expectations!

Jeltron,

@OutofPrintArchive @helligbird Damn now I feel like the bugs I let slip through in my games are infinitesimal by comparison.
