Just read @pluralistic 's blog post about the difficulty that @2600 is having, both with its publication and producing the #HOPE con. This is tragic - I've never attended HOPE, but I've seen many videos and read so many recaps and articles inspired by it. Support 2600 today!

@johnmark @pluralistic @2600 I can't remember how long I've subscribed. Recently bought a lifetime subscription. I admit some of the articles are a ways over my head, some not, but that's how we learn. I also look forward to the pictures of phone booths and humorous pics of 2600, 404, etc that are submitted. I turn to the back pages first!

Trump's rhetoric is increasingly mirroring Nazi talking points, and nobody is paying attention, an expert on extremism warns https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-rhetoric-mirroring-nazi-fascism-hitler-expert-warns-2023-11

@DemocracyMattersALot I decided to read Mein Kampf this year and hearing the stuff that is coming out of 45's mouth is frightening. Why are we not hearing more about this. It isn't a dog whistle it's a GD bullhorn.

So let me get this straight. Jim Jordan wants to be Speaker, but he doesn’t nearly have the votes, so he’s going ahead anyway counting on his allies to bully and harass his opponents into submission by inundating them with MAGA extremist calls to their offices, with the help of Sean Hannity on Fox? If I were a holdout, this would make me dig in even further, but then again I don’t know what it’s like to be a Republican without a spine.

Jfillian,
@Jfillian@twit.social avatar

@georgetakei Look, it's simple. If you have to sacrifice what's left of your Republican soul to vote for Gym, why not go all the way and simply vote for .

@nixCraft unless you consider a generous hallucination! Then you can "prove" anything.

PSA for those of you feeling like you're coming down with something since it's happening a lot right now: CDC data for last week indicated that only 0.7% of samples tested for influenza came up positive, so if it's between covid and flu you almost certainly have covid. This is helpful to know because it means you can try to get on paxlovid as soon as possible and significantly reduce your odds of complications

@eniko Yep. True dat.

"Google has recently begun plugging state-of-the-art language models into its robots, giving them the equivalent of artificial brains."
No. This should be a newspaper, not a sci-fi novel...

Aided by A.I. Language Models, Google’s Robots Are Getting Smart https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/28/technology/google-robots-ai.html?smid=tw-share

@jeffjarvis at least they included a hint at the way LLMs actually work, by guesswork. "Eventually, just as ChatGPT or Bard learns to guess what words should come next in a poem or a history essay, RT-2 can learn to guess how a robot’s arm should move to pick up a ball or throw an empty soda can into the recycling bin." I wonder if that is how we all learn, guesswork, feedback and a lot of "Well, that didn't work." As long as we/they don't destroy the planet or humanity in the process.

Oops.

Thirteen years ago the Supreme Court decided corporations are people under the First Amendment.

Today, sold-out politicians block progress on all fronts to appease their corporate donors.

Citizens United is among the worst decisions in history. It corrupts our system every day.

@rbreich seems to me if you can't put it in jail for breaking the law it ain't a person. Perhaps that is a bit simplistic.

How I feel when I ssh using my mobile phone. At least I had the ssh pub key setup https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to-set-up-ssh-keys-on-linux-unix/ on my box, but it was still painful. 😭

@nixCraft Is the display smaller or my thumbs too big. Of course, at 68, I'm having trouble holding the phone far enough away from my face to see as well.

Ah, but it's not AI's bias. It is ours, society's, a reflection in a mirror we don't want to see.

Jfillian,
@Jfillian@twit.social avatar

@jeffjarvis Yes. At this point in development AI is repurposing and regurgitating what we've fed it. Not unlike the student that rewrites what he read in the encyclopedia or the family dog who appears to be leading the way but keeps looking back to make sure he is still going in the right direction. It is just doing it with more speed and more words.

Sigh. LLMs don't hallucinate. They assemble words. They know nothing, understand nothing. They are being misused by tech platforms and misrepresented by media.

feditips, to random
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

Jfillian,
@Jfillian@twit.social avatar

@feditips If everyone is on one server it would be like all of the internet being served by one company. It's power is in the fact that no one company controls a majority of the servers. If you create your account on a different server you can still follow an account reading elsewhere.
