No matter how hard it is keeping the feathers in the bag, getting them back in is harder.

Watching an experimental archaeology show about building a medieval castle and just wondering who the first ass hole in human history was that wanted all the stuff, the biggest things and the most things? Like the first human that wasn't content with just helping in the village and gathering food and being a part of the group. I can't understand wanting to squash other people and make them work for you just to have a bunch of shiny things and a huge house.

Friend recently told me they're having trouble with sounds, like anything beyond a soft voice is jarring and overwhelming and is causing them to stay home more and more. I'm curious if there is any research out there about this and COVID/long COVID?

My kids found these tiny little mushrooms and dubbed them brother mushrooms. Apparently they love each other very much 🥰🍄

When he was visiting last week, I talked to my dad about being COVID cautious, which we haven't really ever talked about. He basically asked if we could see ourselves traveling again, or when we might go back to "normal". He was respectful but curious. I told him in the absence of the research changing, or the rest of the world changing precautions or some mitigation like testing becoming so reliable and accessible, that things would stay the same for us.

At one point I was trying to convince him that we were making informed choices, so I mentioned how much research we read and how we don't take it lightly, that we've had to make sacrifices like being on a single income. He mentioned cost/ benefit - that to him, the risk seems negligible but the cost seems high. I said that if one of us got long COVID/couldn't work anymore the cost would be the same. He said that "lots of things could result in that, like a car accident" I said but... We mitigate for those things. I have a family and kids and care about other people so I don't barrel down the highway without my seatbelt on. We use helmets and seatbelts and condoms and clean our water and have car safety standards and building codes etc etc etc. This is us just mitigating for COVID. And he looked surprised, he literally hadn't thought about that.

He also said "most of the world is back to normal". I said I'm sure it seems that way, but you aren't going to see the millions of people who died or who have been disabled or can't work anymore at the restaurants you go to or when you're traveling. He looked surprised at this too, hadn't thought about that either. He said "that's absolutely true".

I also said that we've been right nearly every step of the way - "you can't get COVID if you're vaccinated ❌", "you can't transmit if you're vaccinated ❌" , "you can only get COVID once ❌" "it doesn't affect kids ❌". If we've been following research and trends and we've been right, I'm not going to subject my kids or others to the other things we're also likely right about. He surprised me by knowing it's airborne and thinking public health did a shite job. He even said "Bonnie Henry's been spending too much time at her winery"

Anyway, it was one of only two real back and forth conversations with someone who's gone back to 2019 life that I've had. I'm confident that I won't change his mind about COVID but I love him and at least he knows where I'm coming from.

It felt like spring yesterday and the sun was out and we had a laundry backlog, so in a fit of excitement and not thinking ahead we did 1000 loads of laundry and hung them outside on the line. Now it's foggy and rainy and everything is just hanging out there, soggy as hell. Laundry gremlin wins again.

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

Well a huge wind storm saved the day! Half of the laundry got blown around the yard but it all got dry! Even in the blustery foggy winter weather. Yay! Now to catch up with the laundry we've accumulated since then 🥴

Recommendations for yarn for amigurumi? The most recent ones I've made are so pilled!

Edit: I'm using acrylic yarn (light, size 3) and I want whatever I use to stand up to being played with by tiny humans all day.

I love the community and advice on mastadon! I asked a bunch of questions over the last year because I'm fairly new to gardening (2 years in) and got some thoughts about mulching and soil. We got bloody awful soil delivered to us a couple years ago, so I've been trying to make it better. I chopped and dropped last year and just piled a bunch of stuff on it before the winter. I went to plant some peas today and pulled some of the debris aside and there was so much tiny life! I hope it bodes well for my plants!

Sometimes as a parent you do brief comedy skits for a tiny and very receptive audience. Today my husband was pretending to be asleep and sleep talking silly things like "don't forget to put the squirrel in the refrigerator" to howls of laughter from our tiny children. It's a part of the job you don't really think about until you're midway through pretending to be an evil vulture who can't even look at anything colourful without fainting. I guess this is just something I do now 😂

Starting my first ever amigurumi project! This could end in tangled yarn and swearing but hopefully it ends in an adorable rainbow bat!

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

I did it! He's lopsided and my stitches are HUGE but I actually did it! And the grin on my kids faces when they saw him this morning was just so damn heart warming. So even though he's not perfect, I'm for sure making him a little friend!

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

Attempt number two!!! This little bat buddy is almost the right size (half the size of the first one). My stitches are way tighter and my fastening off improved a ton. He's definitely stronger. My kids have been talking to his head for a couple days like "oh let me help you bat-head, you can't fly because you don't have any wings yet!" 😆

I'm just so excited to learn something new, a hobby that's sole purpose is that I enjoy it, I get to sit next to the fire with my husband and make a cute little creature, and it makes my kids happy!

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

Somewhat hilarious update on how these two have stood up to being played with by a two and four year old:

First attempt looks like he's been hanging upside down in his cave without moving for months, he's soooo stretched out because my stitches were so loose! 😂 Second little bat is doing much better though I could have added more stuffing. I'm working on a third project now, but a different pattern. We'll see how that one goes!

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

Gave my hands a bit of a break but started working on this little creature! He's only a wee head so far and I nearly chucked him in the garbage in a fit of tight stitch frustration, but after much encouragement from my partner I finished it! Now my other kid wants one so I guess I'm making another. I'm going to try either sock yarn or cotton for the next one, thanks mastadon folks for the helpful advice! 😻

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

Finished my cat! He's been dragged around for a few days and looks like he's constantly waving but he's definitely standing up better than my first two attempts. This ball of yarn was a practice one, and I'm very tired of the colors, and it pills so bad! I'm excited to try a new type for my next project. 😊

Kjl,
@Kjl@zeroes.ca avatar

Working on a basket now to hold current projects! It'll theoretically have handles when I'm done, hopefully I can do it. Way easier to count these giant stitches ♥️🧶

Second tiny spring chick ball, complete! This is the sibling to one I made for my one of my kids a few weeks ago. This one's been dubbed Cheep Cheep. 🐥
