When I hear people say in that they like to make up the character’s backstory and personality as they play rather than beforehand or at a session 0, I think they must have players that are far better at improv than the ones I play with.

In my experience, if a character doesn’t have a backstory at the beginning, they never will have one.

@SJohnRoss our play wouldn’t be impossible without backstories pre-determined. The problem is that then when given an adventure hook, rather than the player finding a reason why their character would engage, they will sometimes just check out because “their character isn’t really interested in that” but this was never communicated to the DM (because no backstory, duh).

You can either give me hooks you will be interested in, or you have to find a way to be interested in what I give.

@jendefer @SJohnRoss what you said as a middle ground is still a backstory and something to work off of as opposed to a blank slate like I hear many people prefer.

Capitalism requires scarcity to function. Where scarcity doesn’t exist, capitalists will create it.

We will never live in a post-scarcity world under capitalism because capitalists will use whatever means necessary to prevent it.

They will buy up housing so they can charge rent, they will lock features you used to get as part of product ownership behind subscriptions, they will lobby to prevent newcomers from offering sustainable alternatives.

Well, we have a trip to Seattle booked. Planning to drive around the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia area looking for neighborhoods we wouldn’t mind getting an apartment in. Maybe even drive out to Ellensburg/Yakima.

@ThirstyGayGeek hopefully anyway. We need a neighborhood that’s cheap and won’t attack us for being gay and for my husband being brown. We are homebodies so the only reason to live near a city is really just so the politics are friendlier, not for access to bars or restaurants or anything like that.

Healthcare needs to be nationalized in the US.

That includes hospitals, drug manufacturers, research facilities and teaching institutions.

Before claiming that “government run is inefficient” I point you at the USPS. A government entity that has been actively stifled by politicians for decades in attempts to privatize, and will still ship to places even ups and fed ex won’t, all for no tax dollars, just the cost of postage.

Tech support tip: don’t use hyperbole in your description of the problem or what you’ve tried.

Saying “the screen just loads forever” is different than “the screen loads for 2-3 minutes, then goes blank”. Saying “every time I click the button, the app crashes” is different from “75% of the time I click the button, the app crashes”

The different behavior can have different causes and different solutions. Be precise and don’t exaggerate to make it seem like it’s “more important”

How do I force myself to do leg day? The thought of doing it depresses me and makes me want to give up working out entirely. I don’t enjoy any aspect of it and skip a lot. I want to like it. I want nice legs. Back when I was forcing myself to do it, it made me dread the workout beforehand, made me feel like I was dying during it, and would take me so long to recover between sets to do the next one that it just took way too much time, depressing me even further?

Americans claiming to be dissatisfied leftists who aren't making ranked choice voting their first priority are actually working for fascism. Even if they can't perceive it.

If you want a further-left alternative to the Democrats, ranked choice voting is the only way it happens. Any other mode of campaign helps the far right, especially in swing states.

Every time I see Tears of the Kingdom praised as a masterpiece, I become that much more certain the Zelda IP is no longer for me. And that I may not have a reason to buy Nintendo consoles anymore. And that I’m glad I never got a Zelda tattoo. And that I may need to change my username.

It’s a reminder that I need to make sure not to wrap my “identity” into IPs.

    @queersamus @Dragonholley don’t buy games from studios like this. Doesn’t matter if it’s your favorite game IP, there are plenty of other games out there. The reason they get away with it is because people still buy it anyway.

    If you really must, there’s the high seas. The developers already got their pay, they won’t get more or less just because you buy/don’t buy the game.

    Filled with the urge to play a TTRPG again, and as much as my wretched little writer brain wants to start worldbuilding a THIRD FUCKING TIME, it's voice is drowned out by the voice screaming for justice for my first DnD character, who was essentially turned into a tertiary character by a very inattentive DM who decided that I'd get a lot of focus early on and then NOTHING for the rest of the campaign until it dissolved.

    Like, a thing we established early on was I spoke to my God in my dreams. In them he'd provide me guidance and things of that nature and I enjoyed that aspect immensely when it happened. And the all of a sudden he stopped doing it, and kept putting it off, until eventually I just stopped caring because it felt like my character just ended up being along for the ride of his two favorites. And then finally after WEEKS of sessions where I hear nothing from my God he starts to do a random exposition dump, which he then cuts short for no apparent reason, and then sends me a very poorly formatted paragraph.

    @MidnightRaven I’ll keep you in mind if we get a spot that opens. We play through Skype/Foundry. Planning to start Malevolence in a few weeks. Our play style might be irritating though as my players are quite slow (beginner box took us FIVE 3-hour sessions) and they like to goof around a lot, lol

    Cars are a blight. But even more are large vehicles. They are a danger to pedestrians and people in other vehicles, cause more damage when involved in an accident, block visibility for both pedestrians and other vehicles, and cause a heavier strain on the environment.

    All this could be understood if the large vehicle was necessary. But all too often you see a single driver, or a parent and 2-3 kids. You don’t need an SUV to haul 3 kids around the city/suburbs.

    One day I might try using stable diffusion to turn myself into a ttrpg character. What class/race should I be? Pathfinder2e preferred… but I’ll tolerate that other system too.
