When you write hashtags that contain multiple words, make the first letter of each word a capital letter, for example . This will make the tag readable to blind people.

Blind people use the internet through screen reader apps, which read text out aloud. By putting a capital at the start of each word in a hashtag, you are telling the screen reader how to say the tag correctly.

In the non-techy world this is generally known as "CamelCase".

(Techy people may call it PascalCase)

Leisureguy,
@Leisureguy@mstdn.ca avatar

@feditips I thought there was a difference in that Pascal case capitalizes the first word of the string and camel case does not:

https://www.theserverside.com/answer/Pascal-case-vs-camel-case-Whats-the-difference

I use camel case, though if the first word is a proper noun (e.g., "Mastodon" as the name of what we're on), I capitalize it. Thus I would write "PascalCase" but "camelCase."

@feditips

I truly thought that it was not necessary to capitalize the initial letter of the string. Why is it necessary to capitalize the initial letter if the idea is to indical separate words through using capitalization?

I'm not a programmer, FWIW, but camelCase is perfectly understandable, as is PascalCase.

Calckey is a Fediverse server type which includes lots of features that Mastodon doesn't yet have, such as emoji reactions, markdown, customisable interfaces, widgets and lots more.

To see for yourself, have a look on the official website at:

➡️ https://calckey.org

For the latest updates, follow the official account at:

➡️ @calckey

If you want to try signing up, there's a stable server at:

@feditips @calckey

I did sign up for calckey but I was unable to figure out how to get the Advanced Web Interface that I'm now accustomed to in the regular Mastodon browser model. (I use my laptop, so I have a big screen.)

I did see that I could add columns but the four columns I have with AWP — entry/search, Home, Notifications, and the wild column — I could not replicate.

I might try it again at some point, but right now AWI works well for me.

The excellent @dansup (creator of @pixelfed) also maintains two very useful Fediverse tools:

➡️ https://fedidb.org - A dashboard for the Fediverse, with details of how server types and specific servers are growing.

➡️ https://fediverse.info/explore/people - An opt-in directory of people on the Fediverse sorted by keyword. You can add yourself to the directory by including special hashtags in your profile.

If you've used them before, take another look as they've both just been revamped.

Interesting and useful. Thanks. Boosted.

It’s not just Clarence Thomas.

Neil Gorsuch sold a massive property to the head of a law firm that argues cases before the Court.

It was bought just nine days after Gorsuch was confirmed by the Senate. The buyer was never disclosed.

This is why SCOTUS needs a code of ethics.

Leisureguy,

@rbreich What interested me is the slam John Roberts delivered to the Federal judges who are not on the Supreme Court. Roberts said that SCOTUS, unlike all other Federal courts, does not need a code of ethics but the Supreme Court judges have such high integrity.

He is clearly implying that the integrity of all other Federal judges is relatively week. That is a surprising claim, but he seems quite serious about it.

Wondering about Proton Mail
After our conversations about with @Leisureguy and @nbcactus I watched an interview with one of the developers and started thinking about secure email.
https://proton.me/mail
I am wondering about how practical a switch it would be. We have domain emails and Gmail addresses, use Gmail interface.

I see it includes a VPN but my subscription to lasts another year.
Has anyone done the switch who is prepared to chime in with thoughts?

@mike @EllieK

My mail is all trivial stuff. (For tax info, for example, I use a secure portal provided by my accountant.) So I just use Gmail and attach to Apple Mail app on my notebook computer.

At a US hospital, a woman with a cancerous, nonviable pregnancy was told she’d need to wait in a parking lot until she started actually dying before doctors could legally treat her.

I know that healthcare in the US is worse than in more advanced countries, but that is obscene. The US is rapidly devolving.

Leisureguy,
@Leisureguy@mstdn.ca avatar

@dell This is the end result of having legislators and judges make medical decisions — they have no idea what they are doing.

And this from a party that claims it believes in "limited government." They lie so much that they can't tell any more when they are lying.

i keep being asked questions along the lines of "now that crypto's dead, what are you going to focus on next?"

reminds me of when people stop taking antibiotics as soon as they start to feel better

@molly0xfff Media outlets seem more dedicated to words (copy) than to truth.

Are you familiar with Bessie Smith?

She was referred to as the "Empress of the Blues", but it seems like she has been lost to modern consciousness. That makes me sad. Will you check out this amazing woman?

Wow! I had no idea that South Korea was so misogynistic. Afghanistan, I knew about. But South Korea? A surprise.

Very interesting article:
