Britain

A third world country where supply chains are so broken and chaotic that a patient in pain from major surgery can't even rely on on of the largest retailers to stock PARACETAMOL

I can take hits of morphine, but the more I keep falling back on it, the higher the risk of a physical addiction. Crazy. :yikes:

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

@Edent I love this scam. The banks need to repeat the standard advice of never passing information to a caller about your account, ever. Their security advice is you must call back on their standard number.

It's definitely the bank's failure to not make this explicit on the app notification. I hope they are rushing to fix it :blobsweats:

The problem is, people who I probably agree with politically, are hugely susceptible to believing any old nonsense as long as it is delivered as a screenshot which stokes rage against "the baddies".

When I point out that it can be debunked in 5 seconds, that apparently makes me complicit in [insert thing they're angry about].

Thoughts on instant grocery apps

My life isn't cool enough for most apps. I'm never wandering through a new city, waiting to be bombarded with special offers. I don't need to meet hot singles in my area. And I can't remember the last time I went to a secret last-minute gig.

But I do like eating cheap food!

London seems flooded with Instant Grocery apps right now. A dozen different start-ups which

Lexeto,

@Edent I'll never use the delivery apps because

  1. Environmental impact. Literally people order a motorbike to instantly deliver groceries from a store they can walk to in 10 minutes. There must be significant avoidable pollution.

  2. Sneaky about claiming cheap delivery while marking up standard prices. Caffe Nero for example adds around 25% plus a delivery charge, but don't tell you.

  3. Instant gratification. Adverts use cases like needing some onions or milk, use a shopping list!

@Lexeto@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent Feel better soon :BlobhajHugFullBody:

I'm always pleased when I notice more delivery vans with "green" or "electric" on the side. I'm assuming that most grocery delivery is going this way and certainly is a reason for weekly/monthly shopping to be ordered rather than driving your own car :patcat:

The 74,000 numbers of Barclays Bank

The UK faces an epidemic of telephone scams. Fraudsters are constantly calling people up pretending to be their bank. But how can you be sure the number displayed on your screen in genuine? You can't. The telecom system is hopelessly insecure and shouldn't be trusted for anything more complicated than dialling the speaking clock.

@Edent This response by does almost nothing to help , in fact it's a free "suckers list" for scammers to use as caller ID

The simplest message to customers is to use ONE reception number, and repeat it in every text, popup, webpage, and ask customers to protect themselves by adding it to their contacts and ALWAYS presume you are talking to a criminal unless you called that number

There is no other practical advice that works
